Her Majestys Necromancer (The Ministry of Curiosities, #2) Reviews

I am rather enjoying this tale of eighteen year old Charlie who has discovered herself to be a necromancer and is now living with Lincoln and friends under the protection of the Ministry of Curiosities.

Being known as a necromancer is dangerous because there are many (usually) bad people out there who want to be able to raise the dead for their own purposes. Some of the best scenes in the book are when Charlie does it for her own reasons.

There is a strong romance theme between Charlie and Lincoln which culminates quite nicely at the end of the book and guarantees that an interested reader will continue to the next one. I am interested.

Me after finishing Her Majestry's Necromancer: That ending thoooooooo. I need to keep reading or I'LL DIE.

8 freaking hours later I'm suddenly a hardcore fan and full on reading the fourth book. Yay me.

3.5 stars. Fantasy lite in the form of these paranormal stories set in Victorian times. They are not quite paranormal romance but the cases that the 2 main characters have got involved in would be too simple to carry the book alone. I personally think the author has got the balance about right. I know because I have a low threshold of tolerance for paranormal romance!

This sequel follows Charlie again, she has finally settled In to her new home. As bodies have been going missing she must unpuzzle this mystery with Lincoln, her employer that she can't help but feel a bond to.

    CHARCATERS-
God I love the characters and all of their personalities and their differneces. Charlie is such a cool character that I ended up really loving. Seth and Gus are just two of the funniest people ever, their friendship with Charlie is so good and enjoyable.
Lincoln is also such a great character and I loved him.

    ROMANCE-
The romance was blooming in this book. I loved how it was so gradual and felt like it was going at a reasonable pace. All of the people that were libing in the house saw that Lincoln was falling for Charlie and it was just so so cute and beautiful.

    PLOT-
So I hardly ever go and read a historical fantasy fiction novel. I just don't really like the setting but this book is amazing and I loved the setting and it's amazing and because of this book, I want to pick up more historical fiction. This book was better than the first book in my opinion, it was a five star read for me and I really loved this book and the story.

    ENDING-
The kiss finally happened and it happened in a way that was so amazing and romantic. I was so happy that the kiss happened. Now I want to see how this is gonna effect the third book.

Lincoln's hot and cold is getting on my nerves.

This is not a book about a Necromancer in service to a clandestine government agency in Victorian England. It is a soap opera whose main character is an inexperienced 18 year old girl who happens to be a Necromancer and her awkward relationship with her equally awkward and inexperienced much older boss. The clandestine government agency is actually just a backdrop and their cases are merely a poor excuse to have these two interact.

The ending was, as others mentioned, non-existent. Unless of course you read this book for the awkward romance aspect; then I suppose this was a great ending with only a few unexplained deaths that neatly wrapped up their "case." However, I picked this series up to read about a Necromancer and dead ghouls and ghosts and other ghoulie fun stuff like that, not awkward romance. I only bothered to read the second book with the hope that the characters would evolve and the cases would be more interesting than the first book. While the characters managed to "evolve" toward each other, the story of everything outside of their two lives leaves much to be desired.

I won't be bothering with this series anymore.

I must say I literally air punched at the end of the book highly satisfied at the thing I'd been waiting for all through the book finally happened. Saying that the book itself was excellent from start to finish and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and can't wait to start on the next book.

The main character is the same as in the previous book, Charlie (Charlotte) the necromancer in the title. She is strong and determined and in this book and investigating someone who is digging up dead boddies for their own personal use. Her investigations take her to the underbelly of the country she resides in and into new and dangerous territory. Her feelings for Lincoln her master have not changed and she tries to delve deeper into uncovering the truth about him and his life.

The most noteworthy secondary characters include Lincoln, Gus, Seth and Cook; these are the males she lives with in Lincolns house; members of his household staff and security team. Lincoln is the master of his house, a strong and stoic man who can at times be highly dangerous and unpredictable. Gus and Seth are a package deal neither one without the other, they are humerous and add comedy in what would be a very serious and dark book but they play their part in the story very well. Cook is a strong character always providing cakes at the time they are most needed, he also plays his part in the investigations.

The storyline is brilliantly original and expertly written with great descriptions allowing the readers to enjoy imagining the journeys the characters go on. The pacing is superb with an excellent story all the way through and adding something onto the end to keep readers wanting more.

    5 stars an excellent read.

Soooooooo much better than the first, which was already amazing, so I can't even imagine how good the next is going to be. Who can resist until November? I want to know NOW how Charlie and Lincoln will deal with each other after everything that happened in this book. Lincoln' s character was finally examined in depth and I loved discovering about his past and his feelings... turns out he is more human and passionate than how he appeared at first. I adore Charlie, who is not the usual inept heroine waiting for a chance to disobey the hero, get in trouble and then get rescued. Of course she often disobeys Lincoln and ends up in trouble but always with a calculated risk and not for spite or in a childish way. And then she usually manages to rescue herself, which makes her even tougher and cooler in my eyes, and in Lincoln's eyes, who, despites his protective streak, learns to let her have more freedom.
Their relationship is developing quite slowly for my tastes, but it's developing in such a smart and romantic way that I can't help wanting more..
wake me up when November comes!

See review for book 1.... and those gripes apply:
    1. Lincoln is an ASS!
    2. Charlie has potential but it isn't shining through.

    New gripes:
    1. Charlie is showing more of her belly around Lincoln (and the ministry).
    2. She is okay with taking a demeaning position when she has the ability to do better for herself.
    3. The cattiness of females comes through (particularly in reference to how they interact around men/Lincoln).

I still like the idea. The author does a good job of describing Victorian England. I feel like I know these characters (and dislike most) which is an accomplishment for any author.

I have book 3 ready to go, though I may wait due to my frustration with the weakness displayed in the last book. I will be reading it, I just feel like I need something to break up the .....I dont know what, stupidity of the mc. I feel like I need to eat red meat, or read an epic battle scene just to feel a little less pathetic.

Thanks for reading my comments. I hope these ramblings were helpful, as it felt cathartic for me. As always, good reading my friends!

    The Rest Is Still Unwritten!

Her Majesty’s Necromancer is the second novel in C.J. Archer’s brilliant Ministry of Curiosities series and certainly gives its predecessor a run for its money in excitement, exhilarating romance and addicting storyline! As impossible as it seems, this series just keeps getting better and better and is quite possibly the best paranormal historical I have ever read!

After falling head over heels in love with Charlie, Lincoln and the entire gang in The Last Necromancer, I was more than ready to dive straight back in as soon as possible, so it’s pretty much an understatement to say I devoured Her Majesty’s Necromancer as soon as I got my hands on it. The incredible world C.J. Archer has created within its pages is so lush and inviting and endlessly addictive. I found it near impossible to put Her Majesty’s Necromancer down and found that I kept reading and reading; adoring the storyline and characters.

Charlie Holloway has found a home for herself at Lichfield Towers under the employ of Lincoln Fitzroy and the Ministry. She has a "family" in the form of Seth, Gus, Cook and even the reluctant Lincoln himself and is enjoying learning about her abilities as a necromancer, defense training with Lincoln and even her job as a maid in Lichfield. Yet when it becomes apparent someone has been stealing bodies from the local cemetery, Charlie can’t help but worm her way into Lincoln’s investigations, whilst doing her best to learn more about his own personal history. As the two of them search for answers about what is going on, Charlie finds it harder and harder to deny her feelings for Lincoln and soon it becomes clear her medaling in his past has the power to bring them closer or tear them apart forever…..

There is no doubt in my mind that this series is simply spectacular! I don’t read a lot of historical, but when I do, it’s these kinds of novels that keep my going back for more. Incredibly paced, well written and wonderfully described, Her Majesty’s Necromancer was exciting and electric and so addictive to read. Archer’s characters are so very likable from our heroine Charlie to those who also call Lichfield Towers home and bring such life to the story.

I really enjoy the forward moving storylines that have been in each novel so far and love seeing the characters’ lives continue to move forward whilst holding onto the same essence with each novel. I love learning more about Charlie's history, her capabilities and what she can do as a necromancer. There's so much fun to be found in this novel, especially though Charlie's quick thinking wit and sharp tongue. Archer writes some really brilliant dialogue within this series, often between Charlie and Lincoln who have a sensational chemistry together.

I'm completely in love with our heroine Charlie. She is so strappy and fighting and I just adore everything about her. Archer writes her in such a manner that's she's impossible not to love with her likability, vulnerabilities and fierce determination. I love the growth in her that we've already seen and like seeing her continue to develop. Charlie has such fire and life in her despite all she has been through and I have the utmost respect for her. I love how much power and flair she brings to the story and as the main character there's no one I'd rather follow--Charlie just manages to be everything we need and I can only imagine what she'll do next; she certainly manages to keep me on her toes!

Lincoln Fitzroy is a mysterious, calculating and beguiling individual. He is still a real mystery to me despite two novels now under my belt......and I love it. I love him! Basically I think Archer outdoes herself with her characters and I can't compliment them enough. Lincoln can be best described as Charlie's love interest and somewhat reluctant partner in crime but he really is so much more as a powerful man of social standing and ability himself. An investigator, Lincoln often finds that Charlie has managed to worm her way into his investigations despite his reluctance and plants herself in almost every aspect of his life. He has been reluctant to care for Charlie, but it's quite clear he does; deeply, and the hesitant way he begins to let her, and us as the reader, into his past and mind is wonderful, and addictive to watch unfold.

I want to be honest.....C. J Archer has me wholly invested in Charlie and Lincoln's romance in this series. As you can probably tell, I'm a fan of them individually, but together Charlie and Lincoln become all consuming and highly, highly addictive. They have such a fantastic dynamic together that amps everything up. Seeing two people fall in love this way is one of the best ways if you ask me and Archer does this so well. Charlie and Lincoln have such chemistry together that comes across during unexpected encounters and tender moments that see the two of them grow closer with Lincoln's walls coming down during these times and letting himself act on what he really feels and desires.

Her Majesty’s Necromancer easily gets better and better with the turn of every page and C.J. Archer offers many laugh inducing, smile drawing and endearing moments throughout the story. Offering new light into Charlie's heritage and Lincoln's history, Her Majesty’s Necromancer concludes in a manner that will have you gaping and praying the next instalment will be released sooner rather than later!

I highly enjoy this series and wouldn't hesitate to recommend with my whole heart and soul!

This was a disappointment because I liked the first book in this series, but the second really fell flat for me. I did not finish this and I doubt I will continue with the series.

This time around both Charlie and Lincoln are continuously consumed with their unrequited feelings for one another, and it became tedious very early in the book for me. It felt like reading [or listening s I had this as an audio book] a teenaged girl's diary with her angst about the boy she likes who won't admit he likes her back. While Charlie actually behaves more like an adult than Lincoln does, there was just too much of the stupid behaviour by both of them - Lincoln being all miserable and pissy because he wants Charlie but feels he can't have her, and Charlie being confused knowing that Lincoln wants her as much as she wants him and both of them being conflicted and repressed because they aren't doing anything about their feelings.

At chaper 10 I was just over all of it. The ministry business took a back seat to the relationship angst, and I really didn't care about it so I just gave up on this. I don't mind an angsty relationship as *PART* of a story, but when it becomes the ENTIRE focus of a book, I'm out.

“Her Majesty’s Necromancer,” is book two in “The Ministry of Curiosities” series. Again, I would like to give fair warning that this series has some very dark content and I would recommend it for mature audiences, preferably whom are not too squeamish. Like the first book, the story moves very quickly and is easy to follow. I picked this book up immediately after finishing the first book. While this is a character and relationship driven book, “Her Majesty’s Necromancer” shifts its focus in that the mystery and action are more in the forefront; especially since Charlie takes it upon herself to get more involved.

Charlie accepts a maid’s position so that she can remain at Lichfield Towers, giving her a home for the first time in five years. When bodies go missing from the cemetery, Lincoln and the Ministry of Curiosities investigate. But not Charlie. As a housemaid at Lichfield Towers, she doesn’t get involved in Ministry business. Instead, she conducts investigations of her own. She searches for details about her real mother and makes inquiries into Lincoln’s background. What she learns has the power to destroy the fragile trust they’ve built or bring them closer together. As secrets are revealed, and investigations don’t go as planned, Charlie finds her necromancy sucking her into a whirlpool filled with betrayal, lies and danger that could jeopardize her friendships and her new home.

Picking up where book one left off, “Her Majesty’s Necromancer” is just as much of a page-turner as the story continues. The characters are vividly drawn and they all have secrets, secrets that are just as intriguing as they are. Charlie’s really coming into her own, she’s determined to prove that she can be an asset to the Ministry rather than just their token necromancer. She’s learning to accept her abilities instead of being afraid of them. She is really transforming into this incredible character. The reader gets some more insight into Lincoln’s history and character as he tries to balance the demands of the ministry against his growing affinity for Charlie. Their relationship takes on an awkward and interesting dynamic in this book now that her ordeal from book one is over.

So far, I am thoroughly enjoying this series and literally started reading book three “Beyond the Grave” the moment I finished “Her Majesty’s Necromancer.” This is an excellent dark historical urban fantasy that I just could not put down.

I enjoyed this one more than the first, though I didn't think that would be possible. I read it as though it was the end of the series, but I read somewhere that the author is making this a 5 novel series? I don't know, I'll be happy to read any upcoming story with these characters.

    The Good
Once again, the characters did not disappoint. I like Charlie more and more, and I have to say I warmed to Fitzroy as well. His character's growth was the centerpiece in the story. He opens up more and more, but still keeps a bit of himself hidden (which brings the main conflict, because even though there's once again a madman running amok, the investigation felt more like a side story). We learn a lot more about Lady Harcourt (my spellcheck wants to rename her Courtyard....) as well, but hopefully she'll shed her nice exterior, cruel interior thing she has going on.

    The Bad
The bad guy. But since I viewed it as a secondary plot, it didn't bother me too much.

My hopes if the series continues
I really hope it will have more volumes. And that we'll see Gordon again (unlikely, but hey).

More drama, more dead people, and more answers. Of course Charlie is getting herself into trouble again but that's half the fun of the story. I love the growing tension between herself and Lincoln. Cant wait to read the next book!

  • Ellana Thornton-Wheybrew

I'm not overly comfortable with the romance considering violent Lincoln has been towards Charlie.

It's a decent book, I like the mystery, but the romance sets me on edge.

  • E.G. Manetti

Continued the great mix of Victorian historical romance and urban fantasy/paranormal. Plenty of action, intrigue, and suspense with the relationship between Charlie and Lincoln's developing well, and Lincoln showing more humanity.

It ends on a semi-cliff. The primary conflict of the novel is closed, but it ends on the set up for the next one.

Intriguing and well written, I went on to the next and then the rest of the series.

  • TJ

This is such a lovely mix of historical romance, mystery and paranormal. None out-weigh the others but each complements and makes the story so much better! The characters are perfectly penned and come across as both fallible yet sympathetic and real. The world building is the only area that is a bit weak, so if you are one who likes all the whys and hows behind the world and people, this series may be an experiment in frustration. But, for me, I’m thoroughly enjoying the series so far!

  • Megan (The Gemini)

These audiobooks were a surprise to find. I have enjoyed them. The MC isn't too immature for her 18 years, even if she has moments. I am sure this will play into character growth in the future. I do feel there will be a lot of back and forth within the romance in the next books. Lincoln's character is too steady to not yank his feelings in every time he thinks he's crossing lines with Charlie, to my dismay.
Over all it's been a good story that I will definitely continue.

I also love the narrator's voice. Her accent coupled with her proper speech makes her soothing to listen to.

  • Zenda

I listened to this on audio and I am really enjoying this series. A lot of times, I am hesitant when starting a series labelled YA because when the characters are too young, its harder to relate and enjoy the characters, especially in fantasy novels. Two books in and I would say this is more NA than YA. Our heroine, Charlie, is 18 when the series starts. I am enjoying learning about all the secondary characters in these novels. I love the interactions between Charlie, Seth, Gus, and Cook. Now that Charlie is learning more about her power and getting more comfortable with it, I'm curious to see what she will do with it.
