The Afghan Vampires Book Club Reviews

A rare thing: a work of fiction co-authored by two authors. In the way of a lot of modern fiction, a book about the book being written. A dark story at it's heart, which plays with the blurry boundary between fact and fiction. This wonderful book exposes the horrors of warfare and the brutalisation of those who wage it.

I thought the title was intriguing, but the entire premise of this book is as provocative as it is absorbing; really like nothing I've ever read before. It's about war but it's anti-war, it's dystopia but it's historical fiction and also mystery and science fiction. A British journalist who embeds with military units uncovers an incendiary war story that could expose an ungodly history of atrocities quasi-relating to the military industrial complex. I thought that his Japanese middle name would lead in a certain direction but it didn't, then I thought when his daughter switched from calling him "John" to "Father" that that held some significance but it didn't. This is an action adventure you can just experience without having to concentrate on for clues or innuendo, the violence and injustice is extreme, but its heart is in a righteous place.

I started reading this book having no idea of what to expect and in the end I was extremely grateful that I kept on reading even if the beginning is really slow.
Ho cominciato a leggere questo libro senza avere nessuna idea né dell'argomento né di cosa aspettarmi e alla fine sono stata proprio contenta di aver continuato dopo un inizio parecchio lento. -
I really enjoyed this book. It had a gripping narrative, great characters, and a strong set of deeper messages without being weighed down by them. The authors did a great job in creating such a meaningful book, and the main message is one that is incredibly relevant these days. I read it straight through over three nights, I didn't want to put it down.
