The Mermaid Boy Reviews

  • Caitlin

    Luminous, stripped-back and evocative.

  • Chloe Geoghegan

    Fantastic!!

  • Kezia

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection! We read ‘Real Life’ in my Writing Creative Nonfiction class and it sparked an interest to read more of John’s work, as I really adored that piece. This book was funny, smart, self-deprecating in ways, and a very honest look into simple Kiwi life, both here and abroad.

  • Lynette

I enjoyed this quirkly little book about the author's life - travels, childhood etc. Written very
well and with a lot of humour. At times it did seem to jump around a bit from childhood to adulthood and back again, but that didn't really matter. Shame it doesn't have a more enticing cover as if I was on the shelf I might not have taken much notice, just happened to find it on display in our local library. Will look forward to more by this author.

  • Mirabel

A really beautiful slice of Canterbury, New Zealand life, and a snapshot of youthful exuberance. So familiar feeling, and written without flourish but with a straightforward romanticism.
