Orange is a manga series that will definitely pull on your heartstrings. Heck, before even starting the actual story, the first two art pages at the beginning about broke my heart by themselves. This story starts out with our main character, Naho, receiving a letter from herself ten years in the future. She and her group of friends are sixteen and in eleventh grade in high school, but what her twenty-six-year-old self is trying to warn her of is imperative.

Future Naho informs present day Naho that she will lose the boy she likes if she doesn't change some of the actions and choices she is about to perform and choose. This obviously makes Naho hyper aware of everything she and her friends are doing, because she is so scared she is going to repeat past mistakes and end up losing this boy anyway.

The best part about this manga series is the phenomenal friendships. This book has one of the best circle of friends I've read about in years. They constantly are showing their unconditional love and support to each other, and are honestly a freakin' treat to read about. Seriously, friendship goals.

Naho Takamiya - Main protagonist, who receives the letter about what her life is going to be like in ten years, unless she changes some things. Very shy, very timid, a very sweet little cinnamon roll.

Kakeru Naruse - The boy who will not be in their lives anymore if his friends do not change the past.

Takako Chino - The more outspoken girl in the group. She always sticks up for Naho, since Naho is too shy for confrontation, and always just generally feels like the protector of the group.

Azusa Murasaka - The happy-go-lucky one of the group, her parents own a bakery, and she's always super excited and supportive of Naho.

Saku Hagita - Manga lover in the group, who is also totally in love with Azu!

Hiroto Suwa - Honestly one of the best characters, and most selfless humans, I've read about in years. He's the leader of this group, one of the most popular boys in their school, an amazing soccer player, and proves his unconditional love over and love throughout this volume.

I could probably writes sonnets at this point about how much I love Suwa, and how I honestly just want him, Naho, and Kakeru to have a polya relationship where they all love each other, but this whole group of friends is amazing. I love their group dynamic and how they interact individually, too. They are all selfless, to be honest, and they all truly want what is best for their friends. They are a great support system for one another, and I love seeing them build and boost each other up.

This manga series is also important, because it never shies away from the topic of suicide. It brings up great points, especially for high school aged kids, about how sometimes when friends joke about death, they aren't really joking and to always take them seriously. On the flip side, it is also important to understand that sometimes the saddest people will mask their feelings with smiles and laughter, so always check in on the ones you love and make sure they are feeling okay.

The art is beautiful, the story is lovely, and the messages are so very important. I loved everything about this, and I cannot wait to start the anime after I finish
    Vol. 2.

I have officially read my first ever manga! It was fun, but I wasn’t especially blown away 😕 I will probably carry on with the series at some point though bc I’m very curious to see how it turns out!

This is the first manga i've read and i'm so stoked! I loved it! I thought I would have much more trouble acclimating to the backwards reading style, but it was surprisingly easy to get accustomed to and I found it easier to read than some graphic novels that I've read. That being said, I think this manga is a great entry point to the genre for anyone because it's modern, the art is really really cute, and the storyline is easy to follow yet still interesting and fun!

I loved the characters in this. Although I got their names confused for about the first half, they each had such dynamic personalities and I grew to love everyone individually. The story is so cool because it toys with the idea of time travel and if people can prevent tragedy from striking, and I think it's such a fantastic story of friendship. I can't wait to pick up the second volume.

The reason I marked off a star is because I thought several places were a little bit too in-your-face. Particularly, Naho's inner monologue was often cheesy with super hyperbolic rhetorical questions that were almost silly in their cheesiness? Like someone would be nice to her and she would then be like "I wonder why they're being nice to me?!" and you just want to shake her and be like THEY !! LIKE !! YOU !!

But that being said, I would love to see her grow into her skin in future volumes. I think her relationship with Kakeru is sweet and charming.

I've heard so many of my friends rave about this manga series that I was really excited to read it, but I was told to go into it "as blind as possible", so I went in thinking it was just a basic contemporary romance about some high schoolers. Nope. There is so much more to this than "just" a romance.

First, let me say that these characters are SO PRECIOUS and I would protect any of them at all costs—especially Suwa! I feel like he's the quiet, unsung hero of this story, in a sense, and he breaks my heart so much but I just love him. Naho is so precious, and her girlfriends are wicked protective and flawless. Even Hagita is a trip, though he's my least favorite.

Orange has some very minor sci-fi elements, but that's all I'll say, because if you don't know what the story is about, please don't look it up—just grab a copy and read it. This has been one of the most tragic, lovely, sweetest stories, and I'm on the edge of my seat, dying to read the next volume right this moment.

There is one thing I'd like to offer a trigger warning for, though, but I'm going to put it into spoiler tags in case you want to go into this manga knowing nothing at all:

I read this because it was a Goodreads Choice Book Final round selection for 2016, and I really really liked it a lot. It turns on a sort of familiar scifi trope/and social media theme: What if you could change your past? Or, what would your 25 year old self say to your 15 year old self? Naho gets letters from her 25 year old self urging her to change the future that would lead to Kakeru's suicide. There's romance in here, but the book chiefly deals with this attempt to change the future by acting on behalf of someone in need, Kakeru, whose mother also has committed suicide, and who also suffered from clinical depression.

All the characters would seem to be gorgeous and adorable, and the action is actually surprisngly engaging much of the time. Naho also finds an old journal where she has written to her 25 year old self, so that's an interesting angle, too. This is a big multi-volume collection which is layered, thoughtful and insightful about silence among friends about a particular friend who needs support. We all have them from time to time. What can we do for others? How can we say the things we need to say and do the things we need to do? This is a bittersweet series much deserving the accolades it has received. I'd say 4.5 at this point, but it just might get better.

    THIS WAS SO CUTE OMG.
If you ever feel a bit heartbroken or just generally need a pick me up, read Orange. This manga was so adorable and relatable but also dealt with some harder issues, I loved it so much. Would I have enjoyed it as much had I read it during a different time of my life? Most likely not. But for the mood I was/am in, this was absolutely perfect and exactly what I needed. It made me happy and I was able to lose myself in it for just a little bit. Thank goodness books like these exist and I have awesome Goodreads friends who bring them to my attention.

And am I bitter this didn't win the GR choice awards? Sure thing.

    Yikes :/ Dnf @ 25%

Umm so I don't really know what happened here. People praise this, the average rating is extremely high, but I don't get it. This is overhyped and overrated in my opinion.

Plot is alright, nothing super special but alright. But the reason I DNF'd is the structure. Text all over the place, sometimes I don't even know what it is. There's text bubbles in a square with no arrows and no people, so I have no idea who is talking. The timeline jumps back and forth but doesn't give me a single clue as to when it jumps and I don't usually know what timeline I'm in until it's already started.

Overall, very underwhelmed by this highly praised series. But I am the only out out of all my friends on GR to give it less than 4 stars, so I am very much in the minority on this one.

  • Lauren

    A MILLION STARS!

My goodness, I don't think I have ever read a book that has made me swoon right from the first page. This manga has reduced me to a single huge beating heart. I want to declare my love for everyone and everything!!! Ahhhhh, it's the CUTEST read ever! <3

Orange is a wonderfully-written and beautifully-illustrated manga focusing on the romantic feelings between Naho and Kakeru, two high-school students. Naruse Kakeru is a new transfer from Tokyo and immediately catches Naho's attention. She is really quite smitten with him but she is too shy to tell him how she feels.

Naho receives a letter from her future self (10 years in the future) which outlines a tragedy that occurs. These letters (which are in diary entry form) instruct Naho what to do in order to prevent the tragedy.

I don't want to reveal too much about this story as it's a really lovely tale which honestly makes my heart melt. I see a lot of myself in Naho, and Kakeru is beautiful. Actually, I quite like Suwa too, and the girls (Azusa and Taka Chan) are hilarious!

The romance in this story is a slow-burning one but I am choosing to savour every minute of it. It's a precious gem of a manga and I encourage EVERYONE to read it. Honestly, you will be hard-pushed to find anything more adorable and the artwork is STUNNING!!! Like, achingly so!

READ IT! READ IT! REEAAAD IT!!!

  • Iryna *Book and Sword*

You know when you read a book that makes all the other books out there obsolete?
    THIS IS THAT BOOK

I gave it 5 stars, but really I wish I could have given it 6 stars, 7 stars, 8 million stars.

Also, can we talk about how aesthetically pleasing the cover is? It's all green and trees and it just radiates warmths - totally my jam!

Orange deals with a topic that I am usually not comfortable reading about. Mostly because it's almost never handled well in books (at least the ones I read). But this, this is BEAUTIFUL. I am still at a loss for words. Which is curious, because this being manga, it also didn't have that many words in it (relative to its 500+ page count), but it relayed emotions and feelings in the strongest, most heart wrenching and best possible way.

It is true what they say - a picture is worth a thousand words.

The cast of characters is amazing. They all have very unique personalities, and the way they come together is absolutely beautiful. Hands down the best portrayal of a large group friendship in a book.

And while at times the main character Naho, was a bit hard to read because of her extreme timidness and indecisiveness - in the end I realized that she couldn't have been any other way. She was shy to start with, but the burden which was put on her, made all of her decisions that much harder for her.

There were many small details in the book which would resurface later and hit you right in the feels. Orange is a masterpiece, and I am praying in my heart that volume two is just as good.

I’ve been contemplating whether or not to read Orange for a while now. Recently, I came across someone on Goodreads who was reading it and absolutely loving it and it inspired me to finally pick it up…and I’m so glad that I did!

    What I Liked

The heavy topics mixed with lighthearted scenarios. I honestly had no idea how dark and sad that this manga would become at times. I thought it was going to be a lighthearted and fun story, but it gets really deep and intense. However, the juxtaposition of the darker moments mixed with the lighthearted ones worked really well together. I think this worked well because it highlighted the fact that no matter how happy and okay someone seems on the outside, you never really know what’s going on in their heads.

The characters. The characters are all so great and so different from one another. They all have their own unique personalities which is great, especially because there are six of them. I thought it may be hard to keep track of who was who, but it was the complete opposite. I love that they each have their own flaws and issues that they have to deal with on a daily basis. Orange is a very character driven story so I’m really glad that the characters were paid attention to and given their own distinct personalities.

The sci-fi twist. Not only is Orange a story that deals with some pretty serious social issues, it also manages to sneak in a little bit of a science fiction twist. Our main character, Naho, receives a letter from her future self that warns her about the different choices that she and her friends make and how it effects their lives. It touches a bit on time travel and the effect that time travel can have if you change the future. It also touches on the idea of parallel universes which I thought was pretty cool. Time travel and alternate timelines are two concepts that completely baffle my mind. It was pretty cool to see these ideas being mentioned in a contemporary setting.

The way it hits you in the feels. This book made me feel some type of way. It was heartbreaking, yet beautiful and I don’t even know how to comprehend these conflicting emotions! I definitely got teary eyed reading a few particular scenes while other moments had me smiling and feeling happy. Just know that this story completely plays with your emotions.

    What I Didn’t Like

I loved everything. Clearly, there really wasn’t anything to dislike about this story. I absolutely loved everything about it!

    --

Overall, this was such an amazing book and my second ever venture into the world of manga! I can’t wait to read the second volume and see how this story concludes! I’m sure it will be an emotional rollercoaster.

Stepped out of my literary comfort zone and into a cute teenaged love-and-time-travel Japanese manga story. Definitely cute, definitely memorable, and definitely unfair of the collection to leave me hanging at the end of volume one.

    Art style:★★★★★
    Kept my attention: ★★
    Wholesome-ness: ★★★★

Real quick: I'm not a manga reader. In fact, manga is probably toward the bottom of my reading preferences, along with wartime-era historical fiction and self-help books. I love the art styles and the concepts, but there's always something about their stories that I find hard to keep my attention.

I'm not sure why, it's definitely down to my reading tastes and not the genre as whole. That said, I surprisingly enjoyed Orange.

Orange follows the high school escapades of Naho, a girl who finds herself mysteriously finding a letter written by her future self to her past self in the 11th grade. The letter has all sorts of daily predictions and wishes for the "past" Naho to fulfill in order to prevent something terrible from happening. As Naho begins to discover that this letter is in fact telling the truth, she tries to follow its instructions and prevent the event from happening.

Like most manga that I've skimmed, heard about, or picked up, Orange revolves around a dreamy male love interest whom Naho's story is fixated on. I was a bit irritated to find out that Naho's story was essentially eclipsed in favor of her fixation on securing the happiness of the love interest—as important and well done as this arc proved to be—but again, I realize that is my reading preferences enforcing expectations on a genre that I don't usually read.

I think Orange is a manga that anyone—regardless of experience in the format—can enjoy. Just don't expect it to be too deep, or too involved with female individualism. Looking forward to reading the conclusion in volume two.

    Oh, Orange... <3

    2016 Reading Challenge #22: A graphic novel.

    description

  • the burning dreamer.

THIS BOOK GAVE ME ALL THE FEELZ™
Be it heart fluttering romance, soul crushing hopelessness and ultimately, bittersweet happiness, Orange had just about everything I wanted from it. But not more.

Which is why I'm going to settle this beautiful manga with four stars— the artwork and storyline weren't anything beyond the realm of ordinary, but it's the characters we get to meet that made this read a special one.

Finishing all 22 chapters in one sitting took me on a journey of ups and downs, with emotions all around, and I LOVED every second of it. So thank you, Ichigo Tagano, for leaving us with this uplifting piece of art. It found me just when I needed it. <3
