Little Shaq Takes a Chance Reviews

I may not be a huge celebrity book fan but whoever is writing with Shaq for this early chapter book series is doing a nice job. Like the first one, this will appeal to kids if simply for the fact that it has Shaquille O'Neal's name on it. Family, realistic dilemmas, and appropriate consequences. And it provides some diversity in a group of books that typically either feature white characters or animals as the main characters.

This is the second book in the Little Shaq early chapter series. In this story Shaq knows he loves basketball, especially playing with his cousin Barry, but he is not very eager to try new things. When mom makes Sushi for dinner, he won't even try it. His little brother Tater, follows his lead and won't eat it either. After making peanut butter and grape jelly sandwiches for himself and his brother, he begins to regret being stubborn and not trying the sushi. At school, all the kids in his class are working on art projects for the upcoming art show. Shaq does not know what to make. He does not want to use water colour, even though he has never tried before. When his friend, Rosa, convinces him to try using clay he realizes he likes it and has an idea. The night of the art show arrives and Shaq's sculpture is a success.

This book will appeal to young children based on the bright colours in the illustrations, the name Little Shaq and the fact that the book was written by Shaquille O'Neal. Having said that, once they begin to read the story they will be able to identify with Little Shaq's problems. This book will help young children realize that it is okay to be a little afraid to try new things, but that you will never know what you can do or what you are good at if you don't try. It is all about being confident enough to put yourself out there and try new things.

I think this is a great book to be in public, school, classroom and even home libraries. It will appeal to most children whether they know who Shaquille O'Neal is or not. I received a copy of this book from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Little Shaq Takes a Chance is a fun read for children, which emphasizes the values of keeping an open mind, trying new things, and not letting ourselves be influenced by prejudices. Little Shaq Takes a Chance points out that looks can be deceiving and shows that we should concentrate on finding hidden talents, in ourselves and others.

I received a copy of this book from Bloomsbury USA Children's Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Good beginning chapter book for kids. The illustrations are colorful and clear, even if the kids look more like adults. The text is large with plenty of white space. The theme in this book is it is good to try new things. In this story, Shaq tries new food and art, two things he thought he didn't like and wasn't good at. The illustrations of the art work in the story were great!

My 7 year old has read all three Little Shaq books and has enjoyed them all. They keep his attention and he reads them each in one sitting.

This early chapter book is engaging and instructive. It's written at about a 2nd grade reading level in three chapters, each about 25 pages long. There are illustrations every 2-3 pages, usually taking up a half page.

Little Shaq doesn't like to try new things. He doesn't want to eat his mom's sushi for dinner, and he doesn't want to do an art project at new school. His mom and his teacher encourage him to keep an open mind, and with a little help from his friends, he makes a really cool sculpture and decides to try the sushi. He's surprised to find that new things aren't that scary after all.

I really enjoyed this story. I didn't realize it was part of a series, but I am definitely going to check out the earlier books from the library. I think my 6 year old will really enjoy them. We're always on the look out for good early chapter books.

This is a nice early chapter book for children about trying new things. At first, Little Shaq won't try sushi or making an art project, but when he tries them, he finds out that trying new things can be fun. I received this book free to review from Netgalley and I think that children will enjoy it.

I received an arc copy of this book as part of the goodreads giveaway. All opinions are my own.

This was a really cute children's book. It also had a good message of "try new things." I think kids will really like this book and the illustrations are very great. It of course carries a basketball theme with some art as well. Very cute read.

I didn't expect much, but the book was actually decent. It teaches about the importance of trying new things - even things we don't think we are good at. I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway. Apparently Shaq can do everything: bball, acting, children's books. What's next?

  • Nina Norstrom

It’s a nice little children’s story. Surely, a quick read for the little ones. Yep, if you’re a basketball lover, there’s a scene for you to grasp. Plenty of colorful pictures, you may find to your liking, as well.

  • Maija

I liked the illustrations. I easily followed the formula of an early chapter book: "this is new, this is difficult, I can't do it. Wait-I tried it, I CAN do this challenge and I feel good about myself now". I liked how Little Shaq interacted with his family. And there's sushi.

A fantastic early chapter book with the message of trying new things is not necessarily a bad thing. I can't wait to find out what Little Shaq will be up to next.

  • Monique

This is a chapter book with basic illustrations. The story is great as you can find talents Ina variety of areas.

  • Mimi.Y

I must admit I picked up the book bc of Shaq name but really turned out to be a good book. The story focus was about trying out new things. Little Shaq incorporated his love of basketball into art.

    Such a fun chapter book!
