Logan Dickerson is an archaeologist who feels she'll always live in the shadow of her famous mother. To prove her worth, she jumps the fence at a federally protected archaeological site. Not such a good idea. Now she's on the run from the FBI. Ending up in a small, coastal town in Georgia where one resident, Gemma Burke, has keeled over dead in her bowl of bouillabaisse. Logan finds herself involved in a big mystery, (a little bit of romance), and in cahoots with a ninety-something, five-foot-nothing voodoo herbalist named Miss Vivee who thinks she can solve the murder before the local sheriff can.

Bed \u0026 Breakfast Bedlam (Logan Dickerson #1) Reviews

  • Monica **can't read fast enough**

3 1/2 stars with an explanation.

I really really liked this story and I will definitely continue the series. Vandiver is a writer that I just jive with and I can't imagine just not liking something that she puts out. This would have easily been a 4 star read for me if the editors had done a more thorough job. There are quite a few editing hiccups in this and it got to be a little annoying to see them in a story that was so good otherwise. Whoever edited this should have taken more care with a writer this good.

    ***** LOL Charm

I have to say, I’ve read several cozy murder mysteries that were charming, well-plotted, and had appealing characters, but Ms. Vandiver’s “Bed & Breakfast Bedlam” had me not only utterly absorbed, I laughed all the way throughout. Her two amateur sleuths, Logan Dickerson, a twenty something archeologist, and Miss Vivee, a ninety something town character, are absolutely ADORABLE together, as they team up to route out details of a murder mystery that somehow the local authories seem to have overlooked. Using wry, funny sarcasm and a different view of the ‘elderly,’ this book is a true delight and I look forward to her other books in this series. Thanks, Ms. Vandiver, for all the LOL’s!

My first cozy written, and first in a series. Light, fun, quick read.

  • Angel (Bookn.All.Night)

Archaeologist Logan Dickerson narrowly misses being caught breaking into a restricted dig site and after being questioned by the FBI makes her way to a small coastal town in Georgia in hopes of evasion.

While staying at a local bed & breakfast a young woman, Gemma Burke, falls over into her bouillabaisse...dead. Miss Vivee, grandmother of the owner of the B&B, witnesses Gemma's demise and is dead set on solving the mystery of her death. She drags Logan into her amateur sleuthing and off they go.

First in the Logan Dickerson Cozy Mystery series, Bed & Breakfast Bedlam is every I love about cozies with the added delight of Miss Vivee. She is cantankerous, ornery, outspoken and feisty...everything I hope I am at her age lol. I also love that her dog is named Cat 😂. I can already tell I am going to love this series.

From the prologue to the end of this book I was hooked! Such a creative plot and interesting heroine, with her being an archaeologist. But when Miss Vivee enters the story, the fun really begins. So many laugh out loud moments made this a perfect cozy mystery. A must read!

  • Bina

Really enjoyable cozy mystery, Logan is a great character. The audiobook narrator was a good fit as well. Warning: Don't read while hungry, the food descriptions made me drool :D

Cozies are one of my favorite genres and "Bed & Breakfast Bedlam," book one in the Logan Dickerson series was such a wonderful find. The main protagonist, Logan Dickerson, is a young archaeologist who is trying to make her mark in the field in order to move from shadow of her renowned archeologist mother.

This first book finds Logan following clues that the Mayans reached the coast of Georgia. In chasing down this lead, Logan breaks into gets herself in a spot of trouble when she breaks into a facility and in her hasty retreat is tracked down and questioned by an FBI agent, Bay Colquett. Logan makes tracks and ends up in a B&B on Stallings Island, in Yasamee, Georgia. But what Logan doesn't know is that the B&B is owned by Bay's mother.

It is the ninety year old matriarch of the B&B, the phenomenal Miss Vivee, who takes center stage in fun cozy series. Miss Vivee is a force of nature, when a woman dies in the B&B's restaurant after sitting down to a bowl of bouillabaisse, Miss Vivee decides that Logan will be help Miss V solve the murder.

This is such a wonderful cozy, the mystery, plot, and character development made this a wonderful read. I found myself laughing out loud and loving this cast of wonderful and relatable characters! This is a gem of a find and I look forward to immersing myself in the subsequent books in the series.

This is the first book in what promises to be a fun series! I really enjoyed the characters, and the book has lots of humor. I look forward to seeing what the next book brings.

  • Gail

I almost stopped reading this book several times. The plot is week but the characters became more interesting as the story evolves. I just can not recommend this book.

Wow--good beginning! For reasons never fully explained, the main character "Logan"--stupid name for a woman--is attempting to break into a restricted area in the dark to explore some ruins. It was a totally ridiculous premise, but in reading mystery fiction you sometimes have to let logic go and flow with the current. I did, and I enjoyed.

The real star of the show was the aged lady (in her 90s, according to Logan) who decides to solve the murder and takes over Logan as a driver and all-around assistant. She was a hoot.

I'd recommend this as a "rolicking good tale", but only if you're a fast reader who can let the typos go. When I was done with my Kindle copy, I went back to see if there had ever been a print edition, and apparently there was a paperback. The publisher is listed as Media Web Publishing Inc. but the paperback is marked "independently published." Which maybe explains things. I saw no misspellings, thanks to spellcheck, but the author must have turned off grammar check. Some phrases were misplaced, or confusing out of context, or just plain made no sense. And there were at least two places where the wrong word had been typed (or suggested by spellcheck). There may have been more--I have a habit of blipping over such things unless I'm proofreading.

So, if you like cozy mysteries with unusual turns and twists, and if you can ignore a lot of blazing coincidences and a grammatical howler or two, you will enjoy this. For me it was too shallow--too flimsy. I want some sand in my stories.

Logan is a law fearing citizen…. she breaks the law, lies to an FBI agent, and now has to make amend by going to where she tells the FBI guy.

That lands her in a bed and breakfast with a sharp tongued Miss Vivee, a 90 something year old lady, who has never left her house for over 20 years.

But after a death of Gemma, Miss Vivee decides that she wants to leave the house and go to a strip club to solve a murder ASAP!.... Logan got bullied into being Miss Vivee’s side kick.

According to Miss Vivee, her assistant investigator is not very quick witted!

Logan is shaking with fear every time Miss Vivee tells a lie. She thinks Miss Vivee is the queen of liars.

Miss Vivee is so funny the way she fusses over her appearances on her “coming out” with pink lipstick and all.

Miss Vivee has a thing with this 90 something year old Mac, her (not) boyfriend, who does everything she tells him to…… “Mac is a doctor,” Miss Vivee said to me with a nod. “ Tell her, Mac.”…… “I’m a doctor,” he said as instructed.

So Miss Vivee, Mac, the doctor, and Logan (very reluctantly) drive the gigantic boat Miss Vivee calls car to strip clubs to find their clues.

I love light, cozy, humorous murder mysteries. This one makes me laugh out loud throughout the whole book!

3.5 stars. This was the March 2022 Cozy Mystery Book Club selection for discussion. It’s the first in the Logan Dickerson mystery series. Logan is an archeologist - though as a character It didn’t seem to me to get much credibility. She stops to stay at the Maypop BNB to find that Gemma Burke, a local recently returned to the Georgia area, has died face down in the owner’s famous bouillabaisse soup! Miss Viviee, the owner’s mother, decides it’s murder but not by soup and determines to investigate with the help of Logan. Miss Viver, an octogenarian, is a hoot and makes the story fun to read. Miss Viver is the real sleuth and she has a handsome grandson, Bay, an FBI agent, who brings a love interest to the book. Some clever investigation and cute characters. However, as cozy mysteries go, this one was just fair.

I'd forgotten this author had a couple older series, so I was glad to see I had this first book and can borrow the rest in KU. Logan was such a great character, and I just love that mischievous Miss Vivee who insisted Logan take her everywhere sleuthing. Then when they took Mac (Vivee's not-my-boyfriend), it made for some even better times. Mac was a doctor, so he definitely came in handy.

I'd never have guessed whodunit, what a surprise. And I really loved how the book ended. It was almost like a standalone, but this was back before she wrote the whole series I guess. Anyway, I've already borrowed the next one in KU 'cause who wouldn't want more of twenty-something Logan, her awesome new boyfriend and of course, one of my new fave senior sleuths, Miss Vivee.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review
This was a very engaging cozy murder mystery that had a lot of very interesting characters. The setting was a small southern town and if you haven't been to one or born in one, some of the comments and situations might have you wondering a little bit. I was laughing practically through the entire book and thinking, "yea I grew up knowing an old lady like that". This was a very very good feel good book to read. It will have you busting your sides

    Funny, entertaining, whodunit cozy mystery

A great cozy mystery that keeps you guessing the whole way through! I fell in love with Miss Vivee from the first page she was on! She's a typical feisty southern belle who is in her 90s and is accustomed to giving orders, not taking them. When a young woman dies in the B&B her daughter runs, Miss Vivee is determined to find the killer and clear her daughter's name! This is one whirlwind adventure with mild action, a touch of romance, and lots of laughs!

Logan Dickerson is an archeologist on the run when she accidentally finds herself to be a sleuth assistant in Yasamee, GA. Paired up with Miss Vivee, who is basically one hundred, the two women scour the town, local diner, and even a strip club for clues about a mysterious death. This cozy mystery debut sets a nice, coastal scene with very likable characters. It's a quick and easy read that will get you excited to hear more about their antics, hopefully involving more mysterious digging and Voodoo gardening!

  • Melissa Steadman

This lighthearted mystery was very cute. It centers around a “nearly hundred” year old woman and an archaeologist who is new to a small town who take up the case of a young woman who died at the local Bed & Breakfast. The older woman decides that this was murder, and recruits the younger one to help her snoop around and solve the case. Their conversations remind me of talking with my grandma, just going along with her mischievous plans and having fun along the way.

  • Krystyna

What does an archaeologist, a senior and an FBI agent have in common?

A really different cozy mystery but a brilliant read. The heroine is very reluctant to be one. How can an archaeologist, an FYI agent and a senior solve the mystery? The characters are terrific - full of zany characteristics and plot is believable. Plus the romantic sparks - make this a terrific read!

  • Cheryl

This is the first in the series and the first time reading this author. The main characters are Miss Vivee and her daughter's cooking is being held responsible for the death of a customer. Miss Vivee decides she is the only one who can figure out who really killed her. She is quite a woman and I love the way she works it all out. Looking forward to more of her adventures.

One Great Plot That Will Keep You Guessing

Bed & Breakfast Bedlam was the first book I’ve read by Abby Vandiver, but it won’t be the last. This cozy mystery has it all: relatable, lovable characters, interesting locations, and one great plot that will keep you guessing. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I want more Logan, Bay, Miss Vivee, and Mac. I highly recommend.

I absolutely love this book. It is very funny without being cheesy. I could see the settings and characters because of the way they were described. I can’t wait for rest of series and other books bu this author!

I really enjoyed this short, easy to read cozy. Miss Vivee was my absolute favorite character. I loved the relationship between her and Logan. I clearly did not pay attention to the clues presented, lol. I look forward to reading more of this author's work. This is a new author to me.
