Such a happy fic. God, I loved the early parts of this, with Derek slowly bringing Stiles back to his humanity. Fox!Stiles gives me ALL THE FEELS.

Also I loved that this was 100% good news all the way through. Although I like dark, sometimes I just need fluff, ya know?

Thank you, Lisa. Your writing makes my life better.

    Aww. This picture is cute.

    Still love it.

“We keep the bad ones in the book,” Stiles says, and pats his sketchbook. “Not on the walls.”

“Well, no,” Peter says mildly. “We wouldn’t want to go to sleep surrounded by our bad colors.”

Felt compelled to revisit this since DW is writing the follow-on
The Wolf Inside. Still love it.

    Great twist.

Henry has created something different, taken the expected and obliterated it. I don't have a good comparison, but if you want to know the gist--think Planet of the Apes meets Tarzan. Emotional bombs in the first half of the story, which leads to resolution in the second half. You'll recognize everything about TW, but never done this way.

    Captivating.

A really interesting story. I loved the depth to the secondary cast, and how the story was about more than just Stiles and Derek. That Stiles needed the pack, and the family to rediscover his humanity. I also loved how much Stiles brought to Derek's life rather than just Derek saving Stiles. I have to admit Peter was one of my favorite parts of this story.

I loved how he wasn't just a story book villain, but still kept an edge to his personality. I love Peter with a bite. It's my personal weakness.

What happens when you pick up a DW Sterek right before going to bed?

You end up the next morning, having had less than 4 hours of sleep, sitting at your desk staring at your 3rd cup of coffee wondering if you can just shoot that shit straight into your veins. Damn, it's gonna be a long day.

It was completely worth it, though. This was fluffy and different. I loved feral!Stiles.

  • Rosa, really

    Such awesome flangst!

I read this while it was a work in progress and used it as a reward system. Everyday I would pick the last possible thing I wanted to do for work, do it, and then reward myself with a new chapter.

If DW could've just kept writing until Christmas I would've had an outstanding year, career and reading-wise.

Just reread it in preparation for
    The Wolf Inside. Yay!

Love it, love it, wanna snuffle it like kit!Stiles snuffled Derek. Aw!

I loved this so much I think my heart expanded in my chest.

I loved that Peter is still Peter and two steps ahead of everyone else always.
    I loved Peter and Lydia.
I loved how Derek uprooted his life to care for Stiles.
    I loved the pack.
    I loved Alex and Jason.
    I loved the cookie jars.
I loved the solar powered tiny house community.
    I loved the John.
But most of all I loved Stiles.
Stiles playing with the water and flushing the toilet a million times.
    Stiles peeing on the chickens.
    Stiles and his art.
Stiles and his chuffing and nuzzling.
Stiles blurting out highly inappropriate things to brilliant comedic effect.
    Stiles and his insatiable appetite.

Between D-Dubs and her partner in crime, J.A., I've been leaky like I'm in an Baba Wawa interview lately.

    It's most disconcerting.

I don't know what I'm going to do each day without my daily dose of DiscontentedWinter's words. Like all her stories this is so beautifully written. Feral Stiles, slowly brought back to his humanity by Derek.

It had heart, right from the first page, it had heart. The care shown by the Hales, the trust slowly shown by Stiles. The way everybody in this pack was accepting and wanting - needing - to help. And this wasn't just extended to Stiles. DW writes some interesting new characters in...namely Alex. The way the family accepted him as him was so perfect. I loved Alex, and Jason so much. I also adored Peter (what!) and of course

A truly beautiful story from the pen (or computer) of this author. How am I going to wait for the next one??

This is one of my favorite stories I’ve read this year. It’s definitely one of my favorite Sterek’s I’ve ever read.

There’s a lot of heart, smartly placed humor – I laughed out loud several times – and major emotions going on here, sometimes catching me off guard, as I was so engrossed in what I was reading.

On the humor front, this is one of the kids talking:

”My essay was supposed to be my opinion, so it’s not fair that I get punished for it,” she says. “Dad?”

“You wrote that your chemistry teacher was a dick,” Peter says, raising his brows. “Which had nothing to do with Captain Ahab, or English lit, at all.”

All of the characters are integrated so well. I love how each one is introduced, and all of the twists regarding the way some of the relationships and connections are portrayed, as well.

Derek is full of compassion, love for his family, and has a healthy level of unawareness going on about how good a person he is.

Stiles should be more of a challenge to get to know as a character but, the way Lisa gives us what he’s experiencing and feeling through Derek’s interpretation, she makes all of that easy to grab a hold of and ride the same doubts, fears, hopes, sadness, joy, and love as he does.

Peter. Damn you, Lisa, you made me, not just appreciate but, like Peter once again. Why? How? She did this to me because she knows this character. I am THISCLOSE to saying that I *heart* him. What?! I know.

”History isn’t just the study of the past, Derek, it’s a memorial to the things that we’ve lost and will never have again.”

Peter speaks the truth. The only way he can know the truth is if he feels that. Exactly, he feels! Damn it. He sorta kinda steals the show when he’s on the page and I don’t begrudge him that… mostly.

This is a creatively imagined world, its settings and circumstances, along with the historical backdrop, adding to the tension, hope, and character motivations that all make sense. Mixing everyday detail with what should be extraordinary circs makes for delish writing and reading.

The second Derek releases him, Stiles scrambles backward over the bed. He lands on the floor with a painful-sounding thump, and wedges himself under the bed. Derek is empty. Bereft.

Yeah, the feels, they’re here. This is probably one of the most difficult moments, at least until the final act starts. They’re also not all heart-ripping-out type feels, they’re also satisfying and even smile-inducing.

He’s grateful, because Stiles seems to grow into all the spaces that Derek leaves for him.

Again with the emotional truth, Lisa Henry. Lawdy, I get this. It’s hopeful and bittersweet all at once.

I know, I don’t usually include this many quotes in my reviews, but the writing is fab and backed up by such great understanding and interpretation of these characters. I at least try to pick ones that don’t give much away. :)

    One more favorite:

”Was it you who told him to paint his room?” Derek asks.

Peter smiles. “Oh, you’re one of the privileged few who’ve seen that. There are a lot of happy colors on that wall, wouldn’t you say?”

“We keep the bad ones in the book,” Stiles says, and pats his sketchbook. “Not on the walls.”

“Well, no,” Peter says mildly. “We wouldn’t want to go to sleep surrounded by our bad colors.”

Pointed. Poignant. Heartfelt. A bit snarky. Definitely filled with understanding. Intelligent.

Not only does that sum up Peter but it goes for this entire story.

    Well done. Freakin’ well done.

It’s amazing to think DW just churned this out chapter by chapter, week after week, until it was finished. I’ve yet to be disappointed, and I’m impressed with the setup and the world building that encompasses a scenario where humans are extinct - that is, until a “Stiles” is found by Derek.

This had excellent relationship progression as Derek brings Stiles back to his humanity, and of course their connection is anything but superficial. This also had fantastic pack feels, as it captured the essence of every beloved character and their flaws/quirks/hangups. Talia is ever the diplomatic leader. Peter is his typical cunning bastard self. And quiet, contemplative Derek loves exasperating, charming Stiles unconditionally, as Stiles inevitably burrows himself into his life and heart. Not overly angsty, but with a lot of warm and fuzzy, this was a fantastic “feel good” Sterek.

  • Meep

A fluffy Sterek but with a few feelz thrown in there.

An interesting twist where humans are the mythical/minority race and Stiles is feral. I liked how Stiles still managed to be very Stiles. Poor chickens!
Derek was a marshmallow and Peter interesting. There were some nice touches like Alex's character a possibility I've not encountered in shifter fics before.

After a certain (late) point it was predictable but none the worse for that.

  • Dalia

This is so adorable and full of emotions.

The kit (Stiles) twists to look back at Alex, scowling and whining when he realizes Alex is about to use the toilet, and the kit won’t get a chance to flush it for him. He glares at Derek like he’s just stolen Christmas.
My heart melted a hundred times. I can't even.
    Home.
    Pack.
    Family.
    Stiles.

Just lovely--touching, funny, heartwarming. And can we please give a shout out for this author's range! I mean, would you have guessed that the same person wrote
    Don't Fail Me Now?

Bottom line: warmly recommended for all Sterek lovers.

  • Trisha Harrington

This was an emotional Sterek fic. It sort of reminded me a little of the emotion in 3B.

Stiles was easily my favorite character in this, which isn't a surprise. He's my favorite character in the show, too. But here he's different. More vulnerable. He's been through a lot and was lost for so long.

I loved the relationship that developed between him and Derek. It worked.

I really loved Alex, too. He was such an awesome secondary character.

  • Connie Cat

Lisa Henry is giving out Christmas presents all year round with her DiscontentedWinter fics. I love her writing so I started my Sterek adventure with her stories. This could easily become addictive!

  • BWT

Aww. We got some super fluffy Sterek! I have enjoyed this so much, each new chapter being like a little gift each day to open and savor.

And how nice of a change it was to get something this length that was a sweet, fluffy, lovely story instead of getting my heart ripped open, as Lisa has been wont to do on more than one occasion.

KUDOS!! to Lisa. This was just sublime.

  • rowenalovelace

Omg you people! I don't which friend's feed I saw this, but suddenly I got curious after reading all these comments and read the fanfic before even having no idea what Teen Wolf is. And guess what! I finished the first season and I am a hardcore Sterek shipper, and I can't get damn Derek Hale out of my mind.

    So. Thank you very much!

  • Sunny

    So many feels...
Stiles wins for best character, but the supporting cast was awesome, too. I especially loved the impact Peter had on Stiles, and the unique aspects of their relationship.

Alex also deserves special mention. Scared, hopeful, vulnerable. And so very sweet.

    ETA: March 13, 2017:
Reading this, again. I think this must be my favorite comfort read; it's almost embarrassing how many times I could add a 'Date Read' to this fic. My enjoyment of this fic is immense, but it's not the gushing fangirl kind of enjoyment. It's more subtle than my usual enthusiastic proclamation to 'Just go read this!' (though you really should go read this). No squeeing with this fic, just an incredible amount of emotions. Amusement at the kit's initial interactions with people like Alex, who is certain the kit wants to murder him; with Deaton, who the kit probably does want to murder with each of the vet's visits; and those poor chickens, who the kit torments with glee. There is amazement as 'Stiles' becomes less and less the little wild animal Derek found and more and more a real human being. A combination of anxiety and near-hopelessness as it becomes more and more likely Stiles will have his heart broken no matter what the outcome of their endeavors. And finally, happiness in an unexpected and clever conclusion that leaves me - every time - with the unique bone-deep feeling of satisfaction that only comes at the end of a remarkable story.

And I get all that for free, with one click on AO3, sent to my iPad. I get a story I come back to (often) when I feel the need to smile. I can click the 'kudos' button and leave a comment on AO3; I can leave a review on Goodreads sharing what it means to me that a stranger a world away from me chose to share something beautiful just because she wanted to.

And I guess if all that isn't enough to show my gratitude I can suck it up and feel one more emotion regarding this fic: acute embarrassment every time I type in a current date in the 'Date Read' column.

Do you think Goodreads has a limit for that?

    Original Review, January 20, 2016:
This was just...yeah, beautiful. Two nights ago I bawled my way through
There Are No Wolves in California and tonight I am once more amazed by this writer (though, thankfully, this time around I'm not dripping snotty tears all over the place). I really should go to bed but I just know I'll be searching for my next DW fix instead. Or maybe an LH fix, who knows, who cares, they are both amazing.

  • Tara♥ {MindforBooks}

"He wants to believe that the kit can become human again, even if he is not entirely sure what the word means. To be a person, he supposes, even if he can't shift. That's how Talia explained humanity to the kids, but Derek thinks it must be more that that. Humans were the dominant species for millennia. They built civilizations. Derek feels that to define them just because of something they lack is somehow shallow and unfair."

This was absolutely adorable. I love Derek POV and I love Hale pack stories.

    It was lovely, lovely, lovely.

    Can't wait to get to
The Wolf Inside because I am madly in love with Alex.

  • Dreamer

Another excellent fanfic from DiscontentedWinter. Stiles is a thought-to-be extinct feral human that Talia sets Derek to tame. Funny, cute and angsty!

At what point should he send Stiles to his own bed? At what point should Derek start treating him like a grown up instead of a toddler? At what point will Stiles look back and be embarrassed by this?'

I finished this on Monday and couldn’t review it so I read it again. I still can’t review it because I loved it so very much and I have no words. Lisa, your imagination and storytelling leaves me breathless.

This was painful and beautiful and frightening and hopeful. I really, really loved it.

  • Jilrene

I think I'm biased. I loved everything by DW. Anyway! I decided to read this and
The Wolf Inside together. I had a blast. This book has ended, though. It's a fun read, with a little drama/feelz.

  • Alvin

What an awesome take to the Teen Wolf fantom. Ms. Henry has already mastered making Sterek fanfics. This one is also awesome like her other works.

    4.5 STARS!

  • Bitchie

    Once again, sheer perfection.

  • Bree Cheese

This was a WIP written at the speed of light! Daily updates and high quality writing all wrapped up in a sweet little happy ending. Highly recommended for AU Teen Wolf lovers.

  • Sara

    Because I said I would.
I said I would read it and see.
    Lord, help me.
I know not what I do...

So the above was what I wrote when I decided to give this a try. When I added it to my TBR for the GR world to see. Once I finally did get around to reading it I was sat firmly on my ass and had all the feels shoved down my throat until I couldn't breathe.

Here is the thing; I don't do fandoms. My brain won't let me and it would be a mess if I tried. I don't watch Teen Wolf and honestly, seeing the amount of Sterek that was once FLOODING my GR feed was overkill and I swore I would never touch it.

And then I promised I would try. I promised I would give this a shot because I could just read it as a shifter story and not have to tie it in with the show or the fandom. So I tried.

    And guess what?

I LOVED THE HOLY FUCK OUT OF THIS BOOK.

For me, I just read it as a story and never thought about who Derek and Stiles are on the show or as actors. For me, this was about a pack of wolves taking in a feral human, a human who they assumed had gone the way of the dodo, and one wolf in general who is given the task of taking care of this human.

I adored that this Universe made human's endangered. It was a fresh take for me and brought so much, well humanity to the story.

Stiles, even before he was named was and adorable, but annoying little shit. He stole my heart when they first find him living with foxes and then as he came back to his human self... ugh, he killed me.

Derek was so amazing with his martyrdom and the way he began to care for "the kit" and then as he named him.

I am trying to find the words to describe how this book affected me but I can't. It was beautiful with it's intense torture of my emotions. I cried until my head hurt at one point and didn't know if I was going to be able to go on, but I did and I had to. I had to know how it would all end.

I loved everyone in this story but Alex stole the show time and time again. The fact that the author "made him" the way he is floored me. Outstanding and intriguing Alex was and I can't wait to read his story.

OH! I loved the hell out of Peter too! He's such an ass but I have a thing for redeemable assholes and his therapy with Stiles makes him redeemable no matter what.

So I finally read a Sterek, though again I don't think of it that way but I know it is.

My Sterek V-Card has been taken and while it hurt in the beginning, the pain became pleasure and the end was totally worth it.
