If everybody loves a scary story, nobody loves them more--or repeats them more--than children. In the great tradition of campfire tales, the Youngs have gone to the source, the kids themselves, and collected 23 favorites from around the country.

Interesting, but overall disappointed.

Favorite Scary Stories of American Children works well as a collection of folklore, but the writing is mediocre.
I realize this is a middle grade book written before Harry Potter transformed how middle grade books are written. But, even by the previous standard, Favorite Scary Stories of American Children is poorly written.
Some stories are too graphic for the book's target audience, while others are too simplistic. Instead of trying to create original stories based on folklore, the Youngs should have presented the collected folklore in its original form.
My son didn't particularly enjoy the book, either, so it took us longer than usual to read.
