    Ah, crime.

    Pure, uncut noir.

Pop open that bottom-shelf bottle of bourbon.

Appropriately, here are two-word reviews for all 25 hit-or-miss tales in "Locked and Loaded: Both Barrels, Vol. 3."

A Kid Like Billy: Heartbreaking. Hushed.

    Border Crossing: Voiceless. Dull.

Looking for the Death Trick: Seedy. Cold.

    Maybelle's Last Stand: As advertised.

    Predators: Serial-ready.

    Twenty to Life: Experimental. Effective.

    So Much Love: Wannabe Palahniuk.

    Running Late: Lifetime movie.

    Last Supper: Predictable. Amateurish.

    Danny: Oh boy!

    The Plot: Quiet. Withholding.

    What Alva Wants: Got fatale?

Time Enough to Kill: Dirty joke.

    Copas: Border noir.

    Yellow Car Punch: Disjointed. Inconsistent.

Love at First Fight: Dirty. Loud.

    Traps: Well executed.

Down the Rickety Stairs: Trippy snippets.

    Blackmailer's Pep Talk: Anticlimactic. Offbeat.

With a Little Bit of Luck: Bloody fun.

Cute as a Speckled Pup Under a Red Wagon: Brooding. Smirky.

Chipping off the Old Block: More, please.

Young Turks and Old Wives: Episodic. Hitchcockian.

    The Hangover Cure: Need shower.

    Highway Six: Cruise control.

Yeah, there are a few misfires. But for the most part, the anthology is a blast.

    Five favorite stories:
    "Danny"
    "Looking for the Death Trick"
    "Young Turks and Old Wives"
    "Twenty to Life"
    "Copas"

Twenty five tales of mayhem and despair and all are worth reading. Couples smuggling stuff across the border, magenta-haired bar pickups, little brothers you gotta watch all the time, stolen girlfriends, revenge served cold, stalkers, cage matches, cops and drug dealers, Iraqi War veterans living nightmares, religious zealots out to save your soul, and other stuff. This collection is incredibly varied and very hard to put down without finishing. Some of the tales are shocking and many of them are quite violent. There are some well-known names in modern crime fiction as well as voices not as well known. Overall, a really great assortment of fiction worth digging into.
