Among the passengers on the ocean liner, Orion, 'the Cub' - a young Australian of 17, John Calthrop - is considered 'the most unsociable and most unpopular boy onboard'. By all except Brigid Lindsay who at 15 is a heroine, having managed to seize from the hands of enemy soldiers a five-year-old Belgian girl, Josette, lone survivor of a village in occupied Belgium.

Once on board the Orion, Josette amuses the passengers with her French exclamations, and ideas such as dressing up the Cub's feet as dolls. With the help of the Cub, Josette is taught English by Brigid, and all on the Orion rally round to provide funds for her to live with Brigid and her family on Sydney's North Shore.

The Cub is regarded by his wealthy family as a strange boy, but Brigid discovers there is more to him than meets the eye when the ship reaches Australia. He is especially concerned with the injustice he sees between the world's rich and poor.

One of Ethel Turner's later books, The Cub shows the fruit of her own experiences abroad. It is an unusual story with some exciting moments, ingredients that make her classic 'Seven Little Australians' so popular.

The Cub Reviews

One of Mum's extensive collection of Ethel Turner books that I'd never read - pretty boring really, except for the historical picture of wartime atmosphere.
