People I Want to Punch in the Throat: Volume 1 Reviews

  • J.P. Willson

A welcome break from the 400+ page novel I was reading.
    Funny.

  • Carrey

These essays were actually pretty funny.
A very short and easy quick read.

"How do you think *I* feel? I just had to ask my mom to insert a tampon for me!" (might not be exact, writing this from memory)

If that made you cringe, maybe don't pick this one up. If that made you laugh (or at least feel intrigued) then give this a go!

Be aware this is just a a few little anecdotes, only 34 pages. There's a full collection you can get if you want more. And if you read this and enjoy it, you'll probably want more. It was enough to make me laugh aloud once or twice in those 34 pages, so that's pretty decent. Most of what was intended to be the funny punchy jokes were stated in the opening, which was sort of weird. When you got to that line in it's intended story, it lost some of it's oomph since you'd read it already. It would probably be better to leave it in the story context for it's first reading. Maybe skip the opening, or read it after reading the stories? All you really need to know is that she's a mouthy, open blogger lady. Aimed a little more towards ladies, as I'm not sure how much guys will be able to understand the realism around getting her first period... because shit happens, but sometimes it's actually blood. xD Wanna get that joke? Read this collection, then it'll all make sense.

I'll probably grab the full book at some point, rather than reading 30 pages at a time. Maybe even check out the blog if I find myself wanting more!

    Funny, quick read

I'm sure everyone has people in their lives (or in front of them in line) they want to punch in the throat. So in that case, everyone can relate to this mini-read.

  • Mary Rose

    Yes!!!!

Pragmatic advice, humorous memoir, down to earth and real stories a mom can relate to! Loved it! Will be buying more ebooks written by Jen.

  • Laurel

Rarely, VERY rarely, do I ever read humor. This was such a welcome change of pace. These essays were relatable funny! Omg. I want to have a drink with this woman and just shit talk the world.

Seriously a light hearted mind cleanse. I’ll be looking for her other volumes to randomly lift my spirit from time to time.

  • Katie

    Hysterical. Hilarious.

I'm not a mom, but the stories about kids were still funny. Jenni is awesome. I don't read her blog, but in about five minutes I will. I bought this single for 99 cents because I heard the book was good, but I wanted to test the waters, so to speak. I immediately bought the full length book and I'll be writing a review of it in a couple days, I'm guessing.

Back to reading snark and sarcasm and funny.

  • Jessica Prow

Just like Jen says..."brilliantly acerbic with a surprising warmth".

This was fun and witty and these are certainly thoughts I've had before but would never say to anyone except my sister and best friend. Thrilled that Jen puts her thoughts on paper for all of us to read and relate to!

  • Aubree Bowling

Keep these little 99 centers coming, or better yet, WRITE ANOTHER WHOLE BOOK, JEN!!!

  • LisaEllen

    Keep them coming! Loving them!

  • Aimee McDaniel

    Hilarious

First time reading anything by this author she is funny and as she said says what most of us wish we had the guts to say

  • Amber

    Pretty funny

Read for more like this. Some people need at least a common sense slap upside the head and others...if only we were allowed to punch them in the throat!!!

  • Patsy Lynn

    Awesome

Loved it! Super funny. I laughed out loud and can't wait to read more of Jen's books. Reading volume#2 now.

  • Amy Carle

    So real, so relatable.

Jen hits it out of the park. As a big fan of her blog, then her books, this collection of stories didn't fall short on the wit, humor, and realness that Jen is known for. I'm glad I downloaded the entire series to my kindle, because I can read these all day. These stories keep you turning the pages.

This was my first venture into anything by Jen Mann, and I think it was a good way to get your feet wet (it took about 20min to read) and see it its something you'd be into. For me, it wasn't my cup of tea. It was well written and humorous, but I found it to be a bit judgey and felt unauthentic. However, like I said, that's just me. If you think you might like this author, try it out!

  • HannahBug

Stopped as of page 65. This sucks butt. Seriously. It's written in a tone that's supposed to be sarcastic and funny, but it's just trying way too hard. It's very judgy and, for me personally, the author is a deeply unlikable person. The anecdotes aren't even funny. I didn't even come remotely close to being amused. Save your time, skip this

Emetophobic safe as far as page 65

  • Michelle

    FREAKING HYSTERICAL!!!

Granted really short, but oh, the truths behind her stories! We have all been there at one time or another, when our mouth overloads our brain....I only wish I had discovered this comic relief MUCH earlier in my life. I needed it!

  • Lisa Mcbee

Awesomely funny. Loved this single! Jen Mann is hilarious

Awesomely funny. Loved this single! Jen Mann is hilarious. She came to speak her hilarity at our Rotary Club today and we all loved her.

  • QueenBeeQT

Jen Tells it Like She Remembers it!

Jen has awesome sarcastic wit and draws the reader into her stories with a take no prisoner attitude! Short - only 2 stories - but great read!

  • Tara

Kinda want to punch the writer in the throat.

I am not sure exactly what the expected here, but a pretentious spoiled brats blog was not it. I at least expected one laugh and it was not delivered.

  • Alison Rager

I cannot possibly love a book more!

Honestly, I think we are the same person. From the refusal to eat the hate filled chicken to the avoidance of a certain craft store I knew right away Jen Mann should be my friend.

    I LOVED THIS BOOK!

  • Jeniah Jones

    Couldn't agree more

I, too, am frustrated with those types of parents. No one who has barely mastered object permanence should be making life-altering decisions! Well said and kudos for being bold.

  • Ann Holmes

Hilarious stories. I found myself laughing out loud and saying OMG YES!! I can totally relate and I know someone just like Jen is talking about. Fantastic book. I cannot wait to read another book by Jen!
