A Gift-Bear for the King Reviews

My two year old picked this off the shelf for me to read to her, and she alone in our family appreciated the tune I made up for the gift-bear's song. I liked the way this book portrayed helping others as a positive thing, but overall the main appeal for me was in the illustrations.

When the King has a birthday, the old man and the old woman living in a hut in the far woods on the edge of the kingdom are sad because they have nothing to give him. Luckily, their talented bear (he washes dishes! he can stand on his front paws! he knows arithmetic!) volunteers himself as the present, and the gift bear heads off for the castle. Along the way, however, he keeps coming across people that need his help. Will he make it in time for the
King’s birthday? A wonderful book with gentle characters and stunning illustrations, this timeless classic is a story that should be read frequently in life, to children and adults alike. In a simple but lovely tale, it promotes selflessness, sacrifice, positivity and generosity in a way that children can receive and will want to emulate. Even as an adult, this story and the soft, tender drawings that accompany it are so delightful that reading it feels, indeed, like a gift fit for a King.

This was my favorite book as a child. A lovely story about an overly-helpful, and talented bear.
