Move over, petrified princesses in towers.
Stand back, sword bucklers.
These audacious girls are their own saviours.

What do you think happens when Snow White, Cinderella and gang meet an author who wonders: “Now what would any red-blooded girl with brains do in such a situation? ... A girl who did not plan to make a living out of being obedient, sweet and good?”

Six leading ladies decide not to stick to the script, and take us instead through some riveting retellings that sizzle with humour as they toss around notions of beauty, perfection and strength. Armed with real-world skills, they rewrite their happily-ever-afters. Rescue themselves. And save the fairytale!

Girls To The Rescue Reviews

  • Shruti

I have never been a fan of the 'damsel-in-distress' image of women portrayed in most of our fairy tales. This refreshingly witty and effortlessly simple narration has definitely made me instantly add this book to my list of all-time-favourites.

  • Ed Goodbooks

Itisha Peerbhoy reviews the book on Goodbooks: "You’d think that our favourite fairytales have been told and retold so many times that they can’t possibly be done in a way you haven’t seen before. If you pick up Girls to the Rescue, you’ll be delighted to realize that you thought wrong.

The stories are told with a mischievous wit, which even an adult would appreciate. For example, when the prince arrives at Rapunzel’s tower and notices the hapless maiden, his first reaction is panic. “He felt a bit nervous about what he was expected to do. Would there be dragons involved?”

As the title suggests, girls take centrestage in this charming collection. But it is not a bra-burning, man-hating type of feminism. Women are capable, self-respecting and do not necessarily hang around hoping to ensnare a prince. Sleeping Beauty, in an unexpected twist, has a mother who wants to finish writing her book, but can’t because of her newborn daughter who refuses to sleep." Click here to read the full review:
