Over the past decade, Food Network star Ted Allen has risen to the top of the foodie renaissance. We first met the host of Chopped, All-Star Academy and other shows when he invaded homes as one of the “fab five” on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy in 2003. But who is this dapper, openly-gay, man in mod suits and Chuck Taylor sneakers? And what’s really happening on those Food Network sets? During an expansive conversation in his “stupid”-nice Brooklyn home, Allen talks candidly about the “filthy” things happening behind the scenes, why The New York Times should be ashamed for how it treated chef Guy Fieri, and what it was like coming out to his conservative, Christian parents. Allen was interviewed by veteran journalist Tom Roston, who also conducted the bestelling Ken Burns Kindle Singles Interview. A frequent contributor to The New York Times, Roston has also examined the sweet and salty world of food for Food Republic, tripping on Hawaiian Kava, uncovering the truth about the smell of Subway bread, and going on a fast-food fish filet binge that he still hasn’t recovered from. An interesting interview. I love Ted Allen, so I got a little bit of insight into his life, off-screen personality, and some behind-the-scenes looks at the Food Network. Overall, the interview wasn't as juicy or informative as I'd hoped it would be (I wanted MORE insider scoop on his life, Queer Eye, and the Food Network), but it was still informative. I wasn't a huge fan of some of the questions asked, and wasn't sure if it was just the interviewer's style, or just the fact that something is lost a little bit when you're just reading the transcription of a lengthy interview. An interesting read nonetheless, with some fun glimpses at Ted Allen and Food Network.

    Ted doesn't disappoint

Ted Allen tells it like it is, like a true laissez faire Midwesterner. His stories don't overwhelm with ridiculous antics or heavy-handed drama, fitting his dry humor and slow burn delivery. I adore Ted and would love to read more interviews with him. I loved the interviewer and interviewee connection. They just melded really well. So much enjoyment.
