“My name is Harriet Manners and I am a geek.”

Harriet Manners knows that the hottest observed place on earth is Furnace Creek in Death Valley. She knows that dolphins shed the top layer of their skin every two hours. And she knows just how badly auditions can go, especially when you’re a model. But she has no idea what to do when her arch-nemesis decides the school play is the perfect opportunity to humiliate her…

Can GEEK GIRL survive the bright lights of the stage?

    2.5 stars
I enjoyed reading this book, even though it confused me at some points. Yet, this book was nothing more than a quick read.

  • Cora Tea Party Princess

This was a cute little read, although I think I read it at the wrong point, as I was a little confused! Once put into the right context it worked very well and I loved this extra little snapshot of Harriet's life.

So I started this book then realised it is meant to be before model misfit so it should really be 'Geek Girl Geek Drama 1.5' I really hate Alexa, she is so horrible and glad Harriet stood up to her a little bit but wish she would stand up for herself more. I enjoyed this short novel but it wasn't my favourite Geek Girl book.

This was kind of confusing. Still fun, but I had no clue where in the book the story was until we found out about Annabel still being pregnant. My expectations were that the story would continue from the last book or from the book previous to that. Not just go back in time all the way.

And can you imagine my joy at first when Nick was there and Harriet and he kissed? I thought they made up, I thought they were together again. Imagine my sadness when I found out this was from way back. :( :( :( Yes, I still want these two to get together again. They are so perfect for each other.

In this book we got a play (which was saved in an epic way by a character no one expected to save the day), modelling and friendship. And of course silly situations happening at Harriet's home.

I really like the play, though I don't really get why the teachers still let Alexa participate in things. They know what she does, what she is doing and still they won't stop her much. They will scold her, give her detentions, but do you guys really think that a bully will be stopped by something as that?
But the play was fun. I felt sorry for Nat though, but I guess it was expected that that would happen. :)

I loved Harriet in this one, she was still a bit obnoxious/annoying, but maybe because the format was so short I didn't have the usual problems of getting tired of her behaviour. I will still stick to my point that she acts like a freaking 5 year old (or even younger).
But her action near the end was awesome. Though I guess she will be in a lot of problem for doing that, but it is truly the first time that she took a stand and acted against someone.

There was one thing that seemed odd though. Her satchel died (read to find out how in the book), and she was carrying Annabel's briefcase. A page later she suddenly and magically got a doughnut out of her satchel. Which she didn't have? Or am I blind, though I also asked someone else and they agreed that something was off there. From what we can read the briefcase holds Harriet's books and pencilcase, there is no mention of a satchel, and yet the satchel is named and a crumbly doughnut is found and eaten.

Also what is up with the cover model in this one? Normally the eyes look pretty human, but in this one the eyes look off and weird and creepy. Not really what I was hoping for as I love the other covers.

But all in all it was a good book and I really enjoyed it.

    3.5 stars!!!

Just like its predecessors, this book was fun and quick to read. I laughed out loud for a straight 20 pages when the actual play was going on.

Despite the fact that Harriet knows a lot of Shakespearean fun facts, I do think the drama department should have done a play on Oedipus or something because it would have been such a fun play on words -- you know, G(r)eek Drama, but alas, maybe Holly Smale doesn't appreciate puns like I do.

  • Jessica (Jess Hearts Books)

Fantastic little short story to the series with a focus on Harriet and Nat's friendship which was lovely to read.

  • Lea (drumsofautumn)

This was a fun addition but nothing important you HAVE to read.

Review: This is one of the fabulous £1 books that was released to celebrate this year's World Book Day. I was pleasantly surprised by the length and depth of this book, the amount of fabulous fiction you can buy for £1 these days! I actually downloaded this book on my Kindle but I will also be buying a copy to sit on my school bookshelf in between all my other editions of this awesome series!
This little offering from top write Holly Smale seems to come in between books 2 and 3 of the geek girl series so you would be in the BEST position to read this if you have already read the other two books, however, this would also work as a little standalone novel if you weren't intending to read the other books in the series. If you fancy reading the first novel in the Geek girl saga then I would do that first before picking up this tasty little treat!
I loved an extra little hit of Harriet Manners. She is one of my favourite heroines because she can be completely hapless most of the time but full of witty facts and a completely different take on the world from most other people. At the same time though, she wants to fit in with all the other people in the world and have the same fun and relationships as them. This storyline really lends itself well to showcasing Harriet in all her glory.
This book really focuses on Harriet's relationship with her friends Nat and Toby and I really liked that about this book. I really like to hear about Nat and Harriett's friendship. As she says in the book herself, she doesn't know how they are Friends because they are basically opposites but this really works and they obviously really care about each other and their friendship! Toby plays a key role in this book too and he has such awesome shirts, who could not love him?
Of course agent Wilbur pops up in this novella too-providing even more comedy fun. His take on the world is different again to Harriet and no Geek Girl drama would be the same without him. I read this commuting on a train into London and his little witticisms had me chuckling aloud, probably to the horror of those around me!
I really enjoyed this Geek Girl World Book Day book and I would really recommend it to anyone who fancied dipping a toe into the Geek Girl water. I cannot recommend this series highly enough as I think it has really positive messages about bullying, self image and friendship whilst still providing a really entertaining, funny read.

Hilariously funny and completely captivating from the get-go. On an school trip to Birmingham no less, Harriet is ‘spotted’ at the Clothes Show Live and inadvertently takes the job that her best friend Nat has craved for since she was a child. Harriet is drawn head first into the hectic and chaotic world of Fashion with her Agent Wilbur with a -bur not an -iam, Yuko Ito and the gorgeous male model Nick, better known as Lion Boy whom she first meets while hiding under a table. Harriet is unsure about being a model: for one, she’s a total klutz and doesn’t know a thing about fashion but, it offers her a different life, one that doesn’t include bullies and public humiliation…oh.

A nice short story to go alongside the geek girl series. As always quite funny and perfectly Harriet.

  • Emily Ross

This felt kind of unnecessary as an addition to the series, and I feel, is in the wrong place in the series.
Nevertheless, it was nice. You saw Harriet's friendship with Nat and Toby, and you saw her rivalry with Alexa and basically it was a short period of her life at school, only vaguely interrupted by modelling.
I did, however, learn a lot of things about carrots, Shakespeare and cheese.

This was fresh and funny and a really cute in between Story that also has a nice bit of extra context in regards to the Nat/Harriet friendship. Loved it.

I read the first two Geek Girl books last year when I was in hospital and they were such a tonic- YA books full to the brim with slapstick humour and an entertaining plot. They covered friendship (and bullying), first love, family and were crammed full of strange and interesting facts which Harriet shares with anyone who'll listen.

Geek Drama is book 2.5 of the series and was released for World Book Day. It's not a full length book, but these 128 pages squeeze in a lot of story. There are the same hilarious characters throughout- Harriet and her family, Harriet's best friend Nat (who always wanted to be a model- and then Harriet inadvertently stole her dream), arch enemy Alexa and stalker Toby. I loved getting to find out more about them in this novella length read.

As Nat decides she's ready to pursue her new dream of being an actress, the girls audition for parts in the school production of Hamlet. It's an unconventional adaptation of the play in every sense, but that only enriches the entertainment value provided- I wouldn't expect anything less than slightly madcap in a Geek Girl book! The moment when Nat realises her role isn't quite what she expected was laugh out loud funny-I could see it so clearly in my mind. I want these books to be made into films SOOOOOO badly.

These books are fabulously funny yet also convey the importance of friendship, being true to yourself and developing resilience. I love how Holly Smale strikes that balance between comedy and issues that are important to teens (and beyond. I'm in my mid thirties and still need to work on developing a thicker skin).

I can't wait to read the third and fourth books in the series- I'm a Geek Girl fangirl and proud of it!

This wasn't really my type of book, but I still enjoyed it. I thought that it was quite hard to read, because there was quite a lot of vocalulary that I didn't understand, so maybe the book was slightly too old for me.

Some parts of the book did make me laugh though. My favourite quote was when Harriet was waiting for an audition at the modelling agency:
'"Is that you?" I said, pointing at the open folder on the brunettes lap. There was a stunning black and white photo of a very beautiful girl in a bikini, with an enormous cat wrapped around her neck.
She lifted her chin slightly. "Obviously."
"Cats are so interesting, aren't they? Apparently they have a brain the size as a great white shark's, and jaws the same strength as a Komodo dragon."
Yup. It's this kind of conversational dynamite that makes not many people want to sit next to me at lunchtime."'

My favourite character was Nat, because she is very supportive of Harriet, and really kind.

Not sure if I would read any more in the series, but glad at least the author has gone to some lengths to show that not all beautiful young women are unintelligent, vacuous, dumb blondes.

Pretty good, has some very funny scenes. What I love about the geek girl series is when you read it somehow you have this connection with the characters. When they are embarrassed so are you, when they are happy so are etc.

  • Hollybooks

Even though I really enjoyed all the other books in this series, this one made no sense. It lags on and on and on, and I feel bad for writing this for all the other books are so good. There was no reason for this book to be a novella part of the series.

A great mini-Harriet Manners tale, with all the lovable characters making a hilarious appearance. Loved it!
