Misty the Curious Cat Reviews

`Misty made me realize that being curious is really fun. And I love her for that.'

Efrat Haddi once again places before the public (especially aimed at children from the ages of 3 to 8) a book that simultaneously entertains and teaches. Haddi works with children in a democratic school where democracy is both a goal and a method of instruction. Her belief is that a democratic education brings democratic values such as justice, respect and trust to education, and includes self-determination within a community of equals. In this book she is joined by illustrator Abira Das once again, a sure sign that the message of the book will appeal to all children visually as well as intellectually.

Amy (almost 9) has a cat named Misty, a very curious cat - trying to catch fish on the TV screen, eating Amy's eraser, climbing into her new clothes, even seeing herself in a mirror and not recognizing the angry cat staring back at her. Misty tried to catch the water form a water faucet, mistakes a hedgehog for a ball, and more. Amy's mother discusses Misty's curiosity, that curiosity if a good thing and can be fun, and sure enough when Amy reads book, Misty's curiosity makes her a welcome partner.

Not only does this little book address curiosity and its benefits, but it also underlines the importance of friendship between people and pets. This is the new Gold Edition version of Efrat’s book and in this edition she includes ALEX’S QUEST 2 – The Mermaid’s Kingdom with more magic and fairy tale feeling than usual for Efrat, and she and Abira handle it beautifully. An excellent bonus! Very well done.

Misty the Curious Cat has a valuable lesson hidden in well-structured story. I am a sucker for repeating phrases in children’s books and this book delivers them and a final payoff line, too. Also, any former or present cat owners will relate to this curious kitten.

My childhood cat had kittens not long after we took her in. One kitten of the litter was especially curious and we named him Mischief. He was the first out of the den and always exploring new territory. Children can be very curious also. Sometimes kids get into “mischief” not because they want to break the rules but because they just don’t have the ability yet to think ahead and recognize a possible negative consequence to their actions. This book is a simple reminder to them that while curiosity is wonderful in many situations, there is truth in the old saying, “Curiosity killed the cat.” (Spoiler alert: No cats or humans were harmed in this book. Thank goodness for cats’ nine lives!)

The included bonus book Who Needs a King? successfully breaks the wall between the reader and the character and we live through him as he approaches each of his friends from a new perspective. He learns his lesson by experiencing the consequences. Then he must decide what to do next. Both books by this author speak directly to kids from a kid’s understanding of the world.

This is a cute, well illustrated book I think children will love. Misty is nine year old Amy's cat. Misty seems to be curious about everything. That can be a good thing, but too much curiosity can cause trouble. Amy and Misty are going to learn a valuable lesson about that. I have read several books by this author and shared them with my grandchildren. Efrat Haddi knows how to write wonderful books that not only keep children's attentions, but teach great lessons.

Cute pictures and a fun story make this book a winner. Although I love rhyming books, I found this story engaging without the rhyming text. The author uses the curiosity of a cat to explain to children and those who love them that we all are curious and that can be a good thing. The author has many amazing books and this is another one to add to your collection and share with little ones you love. Great for a bedtime story to be read out loud.
