Chloe Ellis’ decision to celebrate the end of a turbulent relationship sends her off for a weekend of hiking and bonding with Mother Nature. When a rainstorm strikes during a spontaneous mountain climb, she has no choice but to seek shelter - and become hopelessly lost within a dank and dismal cave system. There’s one more problem: her golden-eyed, incredibly sexy rescuer isn’t the average hiker. He’s also a dragon.

This 25,000-word, humorous novella is the first part of a series of standalone stories featuring hot shifters. It contains strong sexual themes and is not intended for readers under adult age.

    ***UPDATED REVIEW***

Have you ever downloaded a book based solely on the sheer absurdity of the blurb? Like you know it’s going to be abysmally bad, but morbid curiosity takes over and you want, nay, need, to find out just how bad it is? Especially because the book is free?

This is how I came to download “Saved by the Dragon” by Vivienne Savage. It did not disappoint. This was, in fact, the most ridiculous book I’ve ever read. And read it I did. I devoured this 152 page masterpiece in just under an hour and a half. After a fit of giggles, I logged on to Goodreads and promptly rated it a 1 star read.

Yet here I am 24 hours later, and I still cannot get this book out of my head. I regaled my husband with every reason I believed Vivienne Savage was not an author of 4 fairly successful independently published romance series, but rather a 13 year old boy. And I backed up this argument with a detailed summary of the finer elements of the plot. Upon the conclusion of my proselytizing, he respectfully disagreed. He theorizes that the author is, in fact, a 71 year old Jewish grandma.
We had to know. Immediately both of us ran to the computer and googled Vivienne Savage, my husband typing the name in the search box and me looking over his shoulder, giggling maniacally. After an exhaustive search through the author’s Amazon page, Facebook, Goodreads author page and personal website, we came up empty. There are no images of the author available to prove one way or the other who exactly Vivienne Savage is.

There’s only one way to truly decide this and that is to leave it up to the Goodreads community. So friends, I invite you to play a game we made up this morning called 13 year old Boy or 71 year old Jewish Grandma. I will give you the same book summary I gave to my husband this morning, complete with direct quotes from the book, and break briefly to describe why certain plot and/or character characteristics have me leaning one way or the other.

The book begins with our heroine, Chloe, rock climbing by herself in order to get both her exes, Malcolm the cheater and Freddy the narcissist, out of her mind. Clouds gather and Chloe finds herself in the middle of a storm. Luckily, Chloe is near a crevice in the rock and decides to head there to get out of the driving rain. She quickly discovers that the crevice is more of a cave after slipping on some gravel and sliding down a hundred yards or so deeper into the cavern. Soaked to the skin and with a possibly now broken ankle, Chloe wonders how she’ll ever get out of this mess.

Enter Mr. Tall, Blonde and Shirtless. He inquires after her state of being, using very old-timey language, and Chloe is not a bit freaked out to be alone with a handsome cave-dweller. He picks her up (literally) and carries her to his “campsite,” where he proceeds to heal her foot with a heat massage using only his hands. Surprise! It must not have been that injured after all! Chloe asks Mr. Sexy Masseuse Guy his name and after a thoughtful moment, he replies “you may call me Saul.”(Score one for Jewish Grandma.)

Now that her ankle is healed, presumably Chloe can now leave the cave and go home. But nope, Chloe first needs to “get out of those wet clothes” and warm up by the fire while Saul leaves to fetch a haunch of venison for dinner. (Thank you, 13 year old boy) Chloe is concerned about a couple of things here, and proceeds to nag Saul about where he got the deer, his lack of weapons, and the fact that he only brought back one leg and not the whole deer. (That’s 2 for Jewish Grandma for the incessant nagging.)

Eating roasted venison makes one understandably tired, so Chloe falls asleep. Some time later, she wakes up shivering. At this point, Chloe could probably throw back on her now-dry clothes, all toasty from the fire, but instead she makes the logical decision to snuggle naked with Saul to prevent hypothermia. (Another point for 13 year old boy because this is every 13 year old boy's best wet dream ever.) It doesn’t take a genius to know where that will lead. After a few thoughts about not having a condom and deciding that who cares, you can’t get AIDS from a homeless guy if you do it just once, Saul “flipped her over and speared her from behind, plunging his erection into her molten core.” (This is a tie. Grandma for using erection and 13 year old for lack of foreplay.) There is a lot of description here, but I will pick out the high points.

    “Oh god…faster, Saul.” Grandma

“When he shoved forward again, balls slapping against her clit, she wanted to weep in gratitude” Grandma, obviously. Only the oldest of balls are capable of slapping.

“her tight little snatch” 13 year old boy, definitely – who calls it a snatch???

“Chloe had never orgasmed during doggy style before” Only a 13 year old boy would call it doggy style

“hot squirt of his seed seared her like a brand” – Ridiculous, 13 year old boy. Just like her “snatch” his “seed” is also 98.6.

Anyhoo, 3 orgasms will tucker anyone out, and when Chloe wakes up the next morning (How we know it’s morning, I have no clue, they’re still in the cave), she finds herself eye to eye with a dragon. Guess who the dragon is??? Saul! Chloe is disgusted, calls him a monster, and has no problem getting dressed and finding her way out of the cave at that point.

A few weeks, and a couple of disturbing scenes in which Chloe attempts to have apathetic sex with her ex (a point to 71 year old Grandma here for “just get it over with already”) and is harassed at work by her other ex, our heroine finally has some girl time with her bestie so she can relive her steamy encounter with Saul the sexy dragon. At her friend’s insistence, the two google Saul using the only 2 things Chloe knows about him – his name and the fact that he works at Drakenstone Studios.

But what does the search turn up, but the fact that Saul OWNS Drakenstone Studios! Saul is actually a billionaire movie mogul! Well, all of the sudden, Saul might not be the monster Chloe thought he was. She’s got to get him back! So what does she do? Flies to California, of course, after waxing her pubes.

Once in California, Chloe heads straight for Drakenstone Studios, where she basically makes an ass of herself demanding to see Saul, trying to convince the security guards that “he knows her!” Screaming his name, she attempts to gain entry into the corporate compound, but is turned away. All seems lost. Until…until…

A limo pulls up. The driver, introducing himself as Liev, invites Chloe to hop in.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. A dragon named Saul. Owns a movie studio. Has a limo driver named Liev. Obviously this book was written by 71 year old Jewish Grandma. Not so fast. I neglected to mention before that Saul is uncircumcised, and as every Jewish Grandma knows, that’s unclean AF.

Liev chauffeurs Chloe to Saul’s mansion on the coast. (Anyone else singing “Saul, the sexy dragon, lives by the sea”?) You can predict what happens next. Declarations of love. Riding the dragon. And, ahem, riding the dragon ifyaknowwhatimsayin.

I had to change this review from 1 star to 4 stars, obviously, because while it took less than 90 minutes to read this book, it’s provided me HOURS of entertainment and a new game.
It’s up to you, Goodreads community? 13 year old boy or 71 year old Jewish grandma?

    1) Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeze.
    2) Please learn the difference between adjectives and adverbs, seriously.
    3) Grinded is not a word. It's ground.
    4) Must every single romance novel(la) hero be a billionaire CEO? I mean, seriously. It's not part of Saul's persona at all but hey - heaven forbid we break convention by having him actually live in a cave or something rather than in "the kind of home that belonged in a magazine, or on MTV’s Cribs". It's just not romantic if the hero isn't dripping in diamonds, is it? Gag.
    5) If, while having sex, a penis is inside of your womb, you ought to pay a visit to your doctor. I.e. that ain't your womb, love.
    6) It is entirely unnecessary for Saul to do the whole butthurt-run-and-hide-puppy-dog-eyes thing when Chloe freaks out about him being a dragon. Let's be real here. If you have sex with someone and you wake up the next day to find out they have turned into a dragon and you don't freak out, there is probably something wrong with you.

Still, Saved by the Dragon was kind of enjoyable... I'm just saying - don't expect more than a light bit of erotica and you won't be disappointed.

Holy frijoles Batman! This was SO terrible that it was good (well not really good per se but it did have me rolling with laughter.) It was free and I was bored.

Another reviewer seemed torn between thinking this was written by a 13 year old boy or elderly Jewish grandma.

My vote is for horny 14 year old girl and this is a converted NC-17 fanfiction.

    I'll tell you why.

    - Ridiculous sex scenes that made no anatomical sense (not even in a romance novel "omg you're so big way" this seriously was strange). It had to have been a teenaged girl, surely a teen boy would have discovered Pornhub and have a rudimentary grasp of sex!

-Heroine meets a strange billionaire in the wilderness and decides to jump his bones. With no condom or birth control!

-Saul isn't the foreplay kind of guy and just flips her over and penetrates her with no warning, warm up or lube (poor girl!)

-Somehow his balls slap her clitoris?! How the hell is that possible?!?!? Are his balls made of those sticky hand toys you get in the quarter machine at the grocery store? Or maybe she has a straggly large clitoris? No ideal here.

-Saul has the nerve to act all wounded and rejected after the heroine freaks out about waking up next to a dragon. Well duh Saul, any sane woman would!

    - The heroine dates waxed all over men, she even tells her boyfriend that his waxed balls look like a childs. But still has boring corpse sex with him, thinking fondly of her horny dragon.

-The heroine has a broken ankle and after a magical massage by Saul the Jewish dragon, she convinces herself that it was never broken in the first place

-The heroine is terrible! I felt bad for poor Saul the Jewish dragon, she only warmed up to him after finding out he was a billionaire. When I read the summary, I thought dumb heroine needs to be careful of who she meets in the woods. Now I feel for Saul, getting take advantage of by some gold digging heroine just after for him for his money and his penis.

-There was no story or plot just a poor unloved rich well-endowed, Viking-Jewish dragon looking for Mrs. Right

-Also, who uses the word "snatch" besides creepy middle aged sex offenders!? Come on.

    Thanks bookbub

I am in love with this author. She has a way of making her stories appeal to you.

If you are looking for a sexy little tale with a little more than just sex thrown at you
I think you are in the right place. But keep in mind this is more erotica then it is anything else
    And hot, seriously. ;)
Bear with me here i don't write reviews for erotica often, i read it, savor it and blush about it ;)
I thought this was seriously hot, and I was glad there was an exploration of sex, it wasn't just the same scene
over, and over and over again.
So very yay to that, it does border on the line of ridiculous if one takes it too seriously, this is just a fun short read about
two people meeting and the instant connection. I am not usually one who is like: yes! one night stand syndrome - (don't worry it isn't really they meet up again) but keep that in mind when going in.
I really enjoyed that there was story in between the sexy, it was amazing how well the world was developed and done with such short period of time but being I know Vivienne's style it really wasn't that surprising, just incredibly done.
I think going into this book you have to know its just a fun, sexy read.
And it was. IF you are feeling something with little bit of paranormal, a little bit of sassy main lady, and a lot of steaminess this is where its at.

is it wrong i was sad it ended so suddenly? i mean it didn't end like at cliffie or anything it was just done and i was like...oh.... well i could and would have read more of that! ;)

This was a Google book freebie & so I took a chance. On a positive note it was mildly entertaining and short, thank the book gods. I am obviously not of the majority who loved this book. I was shocked to see so many 4&5 star ratings. I thought Chloe was a one dimensional character & who the hell knows about Saul, I don't know a damn thing about him except he's a dragon, he hot, and lah-ooooh-ded.I guess I've been spoiled by already reading really good dragon books by writers like GA Aiken & Angela Knight.
A word about series books like this..
There's a balance between giving away too much info & not enough to be curious about the next installment. I could care less about what happens to Chloe & Saul....
I take that back. I hope he's a sleep eater & accidentally sucks her bones clean like a hungry football team at an all you can eat ribfest. Now that's something I'd read...hmmm

  • Heather Blair

    2.5
    Meh.
Not bad by any means, but no depth or character development.
    And Chloe's constant giggling annoys...
But Saul was def hot. ;)
I've never read a dragon shifter book before & it seems like so much more could be done, this is rather cliched. I'll probably finish the bundle tho.

  • Gardavson

Nice beginning. I didn't feel the connection between the characters beyond their first encounter. From the time Chloe flew to LA, it just felt off.

Fun, sexy, and hot as sin are a few words to describe this book.

I love that the author made sure to write an amazing story with all of the sexy times.

this was a quick read, but I loved it! it was so yummy.

    *Possible spoilers ahead*

This book is exactly what I wanted from dragon shifter erotica. As charming as it is self-aware, Saved by the Dragon is a fast-paced romance with plenty of smut and humour to satisfy a fan of the paranormal romance genre. It plays with the well-established tropes of the genre, as well as playing with the mythos and expectations that one might have as a lover of fantasy. For instance, the meeting of the heroine, Chloe, and her soon-to-be dragon lover, Saul, takes place on a craggy mountainside in the rain. Their steamy “meet cute” is almost a modern reflection on the virgin sacrifice to the old god/monster myths. Instead of Chloe being arrested to a rock against her will to await being devoured by some hideous beast, she is independently hiking in the wilderness when she injures her ankle and is rendered immobile. She is soon rescued by Saul, an unbearably handsome man (of course), who is deliciously shirtless (of course!), and he carries her to his nearby campsite where he proceeds to heal her wound and give her food and shelter. Not long after, they consummate their immediate attraction, and are bonded henceforth. So, instead of the virgin sacrifice being consumed by the creature, Chloe is devoured by Saul in another sense. *Wink! Nudge!*
Chloe and Saul are both enjoyable characters, neither of them possessing some of the more obnoxious character traits that seem to pervade the romance genre. This story reads very quickly, so I’m pleased that there is more in this series so that I can spend more time getting to know them. The character development is established in the story telling itself- and it did leave me wanting a little more- especially more Saul! You’ve got a dragon that’s hundreds of years old and he can shift into a man at will-- I’d definitely love to sit down with him over a flagon of mead and hear all his stories! I’m eagerly staying tuned for more stories and dragon sex. The minor characters have flavors and voices all their own, helping to flesh out the world. All in all, a satisfying read, and I’m ecstatic that dragons are so vividly brought into the sexy shifter world.
This is the first book I’ve read by Vivienne Savage, and again, I was not disappointed. I recommend this novel to fans of the paranormal romance genre, and to anyone who enjoys a little delightful smut with a side of urban fantasy! Ride the Dragon!

Chloe is out rock climbing when it starts to storm. Her luck continues to take further turns for the worse, and she finds herself in a cave with what is probably a broken ankle. Fortunately for her, spelunker Saul shows up to rescue her.

He isn’t wearing a shirt and he looks like a Viking God. He talks a bit funny, but that’s ok. She establishes that he has a job and a sense of humour. Even better, he’s very handy to have around. He fixes her ankle, goes out hunting and feeds her roast venison. He even has some clothes and a sleeping bag to make her comfortable.

Chloe doesn’t have great luck with men. Her current ex is a cheat. Her previous ex is a cheat. This guy, though, is super cute so when he tries the ‘conserve body heat’ line she’s more than willing to get naked for some sexy times. His technique’s a bit basic, but all up he’s a pretty good lay, so she goes to sleep pretty happy with how everything’s working out.

And wakes up next to a dragon.

‘Monster!’ Chloe screams. Saul, rather offended, asks where her promise to be his went, but she’s having none of it, and he takes off.

Back home, Chloe tries spending time with her ex, but she’s no longer into him. She has a run in with the previous ex at work, and quits her job. She’s having sexy dreams about Saul. It’s no use: she’s going to have to go find him, apologise, and give him some pointers to improve his technique.

‘Saved by the Dragon’ is novella length, with an open-ended ending. I’m at the stage of thinking that I could leave them here and just assume they worked out great and are having a super fun time having sex all over Saul’s Californian estate. Maybe they’ll get married. Maybe they’ll work out some magic to extend Chloe’s lifespan, and some more magic to make babies.

I liked both Chloe and Saul, but since (by the author’s admission) this was originally intended as a one off, I felt it lacked some hooks to get me to keep reading the next books. The world building is pretty basic, and does introduce some further paranormal elements beyond dragon shifters, but there’s no real hint that these will pose any immediate source of conflict. This is an erotic romance. Sex comes up early and while it’s used to build some intensity into the relationship, it isn’t developed as another source of emotional conflict, or to demonstrate an increasing emotional intimacy. It’s also relatively tame. I liked Savage’s style and will probably read her again.

I was given a complimentary copy for an honest review by author Vivienne Savage. This is a novella from the Loved by the Dragon #1 by the author.

Chloe went out on her own hiking trying to clear her head about her boyfriend. Things do not go well for her until she is saved by a mysterious man Saul. When she can't get him out of her head she goes looking for the sexy man and gets more then she bargained for.

I love the characters and their interaction with each other and the other characters. Even though this is a short read the story line flow was very smooth.

This is for any mature paranormal romance reader.

    5 Super Sexy Stars.

What's not to love about a sexy man who can rescue you AND find you a haunch of venison to roast over the campfire? Oh, and who happens to turn into a dragon while you're sleeping after being so totally sated by fabulous sex?

Saul is a beta sweetie and I had to stop myself from making plans to go off rock climbing to let a dragon shifter find and rescue me!

This book is well written, the pace moves well, and the sex scenes are scorching hot. I love that Chloe gets to be the teacher for Saul, and that he is such a fast learner. Rawr.

Read this in one day. I can hardly wait to read #2.

  • Bebe20018

This book was laughable. The insta-love so funny. After kicking the dragon to the curb after a night of sex Chole decides she loves said dragon after he gives her one more night of sex, a flight on his back and tons of precious jewels. Go figure.

  • Meredith

    3.5 stars for me.

This was a sexy, fun, short dragon story.
I got this book for free on Amazon and really enjoyed it.

Chloe was a smart heroine. I really liked her. Saul the dragon of our story was sweet and sexy. This was a short story so I will have to read the next two ( I believe) books to find out what happens to them.

My only complaint is a found a couple of inconsistencies and just some word choices in intimate scenes that I didn't care for. All in all a great story.

***I want a dragon like Saul***
I was completely taken over by this story! I loved the steamy romance mixed with the paranormal... Dragons are a delight and I absolute loved Saul! I loved everything about him and at first, I was very frustrated with Chloe, but in the end, I loved the tale the author wove! Well done - truly entertaining while being completely sensual and charming!

  • Eldarwen

Well, it was a cute story but a little far removed from anything resembling the credible. I know that statement doesn't make much sense, but it does in my head.
Character development was also lacking, but then again, this was a novella rather than a novel, so there wasn't all that much space for a lot of development.

    2.5-3 stars

very good story. I felt as excited as her when she flew on him and saw his lair.

    Why I Read This:
I initially was introduced to Vivienne Savage through her Once Upon a Spell series. So when I tried started this one, boy was I surprised how smutty it was. Despite the smut levels, I read on because it was simple escapism and the world building was actually pretty interesting.

    Characters?
The characters are simple and likable. Savage strives for equality in the relationships, making the females out to be more like the alphas in the relationships at times. Saul had an adorable naivete to him and Chloe had her moments, but sometimes she was borderline rude. The servants are just insanely convenient. While the idea of convenience is nice, it did remind me very very much about how escapist fantasy this story was.

    Quality of Writing:
Third person POV. The writing is simple and, yep, smutty. It isn't riddled with typos, though, there are a few. It is easy to read and very different from Savage's Once Upon a Spell series, and can be a bit repetitive on word usage.

    Pacing:
Fast. Better for folks who are in the mood for a quick read.

    World Building:
It is an urban fantasy set in the US. It has a light and subtle touch on world building, but Savage makes use of casual name dropping and names to hint at the world hidden to the average human. I liked the subtle hints and liked that there was some talk on dragon culture. The dragon culture is extremely simplified, so best read by folks looking for something simple and easy without lengthy and/or complex drama.

Overall Scale of Approval (Discarded(0-stars) to All-the-Warm-Fuzzies(5-stars):
2.5 stars. It was short, sweet, and entertaining, even if it was suuuper escapist fantasy. I have mixed feelings about Chloe's decision about work. It was also a bit excessively steamy, but the author cautions you that she writes different levels of heat, so I just wasn't prepared. Lol.

  • Shivangi

I was enticed by the pretty cover and the idea of a good, dragon romance and what did I get? The first thing I'll say is "UGH".

I sped through this book with little to no interest and lots of eye rolling. It was just a short erotica between this poor girl who can't find a decent man and this mighty, super rich guy who turns out to be the only decent guy, and added bonus: he's a dragon with feather wings (therefore superior - scaled wings make you an inferior dragon aw) and wow he can fly! That was it. So emotions involved, you see no relationship developing. It's just sex and then 'omg ew you're a dragon', 'but I still wanna fuck him because guys here are terrible', 'omg he's a dragon AND rich so I'll go look for him', more sex, and yaayyy happy ever after. That. Is. It.

Oh, and throw in a friend the protagonist refers to as "the spicy Latina" at some point. Literally. Like this is such a basic, white AF story that it's annoying me to my wit's end and I got myself the whole three books so I don't have a choice, I have to read them. But oh my god, dragons need a proper, solid storyline. And far away from authors like this please. Like no offence but that was TERRIBLE representation. It also strongly reminded me of The Pisces which is probably the most gross book I read last year, this one easily joins the ranks.

  • Erin Penn

Two strangers with a brief encounter - one flies off a dragon and the other's world shift, because DRAGON!

Saved by the Dragon is the first of two stories following the romance of Chloe and Saul.

And that is pretty much it. Straight line story, no depth of character, no pathos and very little humor. A couple extra characters, the world-building is generic rich guy - and the woman must leave her world for his. The story could easily be trimmed to half the length without losing anything.

Biggest and easiest change to make this a better story would be make the characters less pre-determined roles. Romantic lead female, romantic (paranormal-rich) lead male, BBF female, annoying ex(es), servant-friends.

Sex scenes - woman has a snatch. That is her primary reference to her body part. o_O

  • Hailey

Harmless fluff, more or less. The 'romantic' scenes are comical, but the story itself is lacking much in the way of plot, conflict, and personality on the part of the protagonists. There's also a few worryingly phrased descriptions of people of color. Vivienne Savage tends to write quick harmless reads, but her better books are in the 'once upon a spell' series, as the character's there have CHARACTER, and there are real plots. Her problem as an author is general that her stories lack any IMPACT and tension. They aren't THE WORST , merely quick. The most irritating fact is that some good ideas aren't ever fully fleshed out.

Chloe injures herself while on a climb, and finds refuge inside a cave where she meets the mysterious Saul. Saul tends to her foot—then he tends to other things.
    It’s hot.
When he reveals his true self though, things don’t go as he hoped, and Chloe runs away. She goes back to her life, but Saul is never far from her mind.
This story is short, It’s sweet, and it’s sexy. It has an open ended conclusion, and is primed to extend into more books. There isn’t much angst, and the conflicts are solved pretty quickly. I would consider this a sweet paranormal romance. It was enjoyable, and I am tempted to read on. These two are great together.
