Cambodia’s mystic class of sorcerers, mediums, fortunetellers, and monks channel spirits, read fortunes in numbers and cards, and inscribe enchantments in flesh. But technology and modernity are changing these roles and rituals.
Vanishing Act tracks down these singular people to document their lives, painting vivid portraits of men and women who live with one foot in the mundane and another in the magical.
With 100 pages of interviews, dozens of photos, and nearly an hour of video, the book takes you inside our quest for magic, so you can experience it firsthand. From Song Sokheng, who channels two childlike spirits, to a sorcerer who relies on numerology (and a healthy respect for authority) to care for nine wives and their children, Vanishing Act contains eye-opening accounts of traditions that face an uncertain future.

Absolutely fascinating look at an aspect of Cambodian culture one can feel but is so hard to see. Ryun and his team have put together a thoughtful, and thought provoking, book that is as revealing as it is respectful. Highly recommend both for content and approach.
