The Bear's Surprise (Bear's Song) Reviews

Although not quite as enjoyable as the other Littke bear book I have read I still thoroughly enjoyed the hugely detailed forest scenes reminiscent of Richard Scarry's lowly worm books. I love the details of the underground passages and homes. These are lovely drawings, the animals are so cute and the drawings have a lovely sense of humour. An ideal book for a journey, you could spend ages looking at all the tiny details. This book also had holes in each double page spread allowing you to peek through to the next page. A good fun read!

  • Julie

Gorgeous detailed illustrations that are a treat to explore, peep-holes to entice you to turn the page and a fun story that celebrates curiosity.

Papa Bear and Little Bear return in this third picture-book adventure, following upon
    The Bear's Song
    and
    The Bear's Sea Escape
, this time finding themselves involved in a marvelous circus escapade. Waking up from his winter hibernation, Little Bear discovers that Papa Bear is missing and goes in search of him, hunting through the forest and various underground caverns, and eventually tracking him down at the circus. Here he gets involved in the act, joining Papa Bear, and eventually, Mama Bear and Teeny Tiny Bear as well, as performers. In the end, the entire Bear family returns to their forest home...

Originally published in France as Poupoupidours, this entertaining picture-book is somewhat of a departure from its two predecessors. In addition to the hunt-and-find aspect of the story, present in the two earlier titles, in The Bear's Surprise we see cut-outs on each page, providing Little Bear (and through him, the reader) with visual clues as to the direction he should go in his search. Another difference here is that it is Little Bear searching, rather than his Papa. Finally, Mama Bear and a new (presumably?) sibling are introduced here, whereas in the previous stories, Papa Bear and Little Bear seemed to be living on their own. Although still quite engaging - I love Chaud's artwork, and find his bears charming! - I thought that this third Papa Bear/Little Bear picture-book was a little weaker than the previous titles, largely because it felt like the surprise appearance of Mama Bear and Teeny Tiny Bear was shoehorned into the very end of the story, leading to a somewhat fractured narrative. Leaving that aside - I subtracted a star as a result - this is still likely to please young reader/listeners who enjoyed Benjamin Chaud's previous forays into this ursine world, and it is to them that I would recommend it.

  • Shelley

One of those picture books where it is fun to pour over the details in the illustrations.

  • Terry

Warning - this book is a lot of fun! I'll admit it. The story is a fun adventure, and Teeny Tiny Bear's arrival was a nice surprise. The page cutouts are wonderful. Each is unique and the "flip side" is equally fun when you turn the page. Because the pages can be very busy visually, the cutouts can help guide young readers to where Little Bear is on the page.

Great idea on ways to explore this boook with young readers in the full Reading Tub review.

Little Bear is looking everywhere for Papa Bear when he suddenly arrives at a circus and sees him riding a small bicycle through a flaming hoop. Then Little Bear lands on his Mama Bear's nose on the moon, and there is a new baby bear in their family. I thought this was a little odd, but I didn't dislike it.

  • Oanh

This is gorgeously and intricately illustrated; so much to discover on every page. But the story ... what's going on? Is it a dream? Am I supposed to approve of bears performing in circuses? What? Who is Teeny Tiny Bear?

  • Kimberly

    Delightfully silly!

  • John

I like this book because it has holes in the book, and then it shows things that do have holes for it to breathe out of or something. And one was a cannon that went PEW! I think, in the real world.

  • Melissa

    Beautiful illustrations

  • kim

I just find the illustrations in this series so cute. The story is fun enough too

  • Kim

The bear family volunteers to perform in a circus. Little Bear discovers he has a little brother, Teeny Tiny Bear. Odd.

  • Jill

Four stars for the illustrations, 2 stars for plot

  • Nancy

Cut outs in the book added to the story.

  • Sara

Cleverly placed cutouts in the paper make you want to turn the page. Story is a bit bizarre.

Little bear is on the hunt for his papa bear and travels through many a marvelous scene to find him and return home.

My nephew and I were drawn to the drawings and the thousands of little details in each scene. He particularly loved the cutouts on each page that transferred to the next scene. It was marvelously creative without having to be portrayed as a book gimmick. I particularly loved the dragon page while my nephew loved the underground pipes page.

The story was a thread that barely held the story together. Really we were excited to turn the page and see what silly scene would be there for us next! There aren't a plethora of words though my nephew was distracted reading trying to look at all the details. Definitely one to pick up for home so they can pour over each page.

BOTTOM LINE: A melding of drawings, cut out and a whimsical story of adventure!

Little Bear is off on another adventure when he awakens from his winter hibernation to discover his family has gone missing. From Benjamin Chaud, a Kirkus Reviews Best Children's Book of the Year award author, comes another adventure of Little Bear in The Bear's Surprise. As with the other two previous books this book will take up more than a book shelf and will have your little one looking to solve the mystery for Little Bear. I was pleased to see the illustrations were as marvelous in this newest addition as they have been in the past. You know the illustrations are well done when you have to hunt for the cut outs in the pages before you can discover where Little Bear will have to go next. I found I could not read this book quickly or just once. I marveled at the minute details found within the illustrations and the humor found within some of the drawings. I never thought I would see a sketch of Lewis Carroll's famous characters in an adventure of Little Bear. (I won't tell you on what page--you will have to discover this on your own!)

In this book a bear cub moves through cutouts on every page to find his parents and a surprise. After all, it's spring, and time for him to get moving after his long winter' published originally in France, Little Bear follows interactivs hibernation. One thing leads to another, and he spies a cave that leads to a pipe that leads to a washing machine. Once he emerges, he finds himself at the circus where his parents are busy eall those book pages, and the surprise Mama has for him will elicit an "antertaining a crowd. Before he knows it, he's part of the act, juggling, balancing, and bowing for applause. While Little Bear loves being part of the show, he also is ready to go home for a rest. Young readers will surely enjoy the action and all the bright colors in this book by the creator of The Bear's Song. There are several things happening on book's pages, and Mama's surprise will elicit an "aw" from readers.

Like I told my co-worker, this book's a bit of an acid trip. It's fun to look for all the weird details in the illustrations, but it will really get you scratching your head... I turned a page and really thought, "how did the bear get here, I have to go back and reread that"... not typical of most picture books. Also, the text is at the very bottom of the very long page in small letters, so that was kind of annoying. I'm not sure what kind of kid would be really into the story, but the illustrations might entertain them.

What I thought - I really like how there are cut out shapes on each page spread, making the story seem to travel across the pages. Mr. Chaud has several references to his other works, including Flopsy. His artwork is always fun to look at and pick out things.
The story is rather simple, but good. It would make a great bedtime story for kids. The book itself is very good for reluctant readers. It has a lot of space for visual impact, with a good amount of humor.
*NOTE* I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book

Readers were and will continue to be enchanted with the father and son duo and their winding adventures in The Bear's Song and The Bear's Sea Escape. In a third title, The Bear's Surprise (Chronicle Books, September 15, 2015) written and illustrated by Benjamin Chaud spring has sprung. Roles are reversed as Papa Bear seems to have vanished.

November 2016 - this time, instead of a look-and-find experience, you get die-cuts that take you through to the next stage of Little Bear's adventure - with a sweet ending. Ben loves these. Reading on repeat, and it starts to feel text-heavy. The pictures really do the heavy lifting, but the text feels like too much without adding enough. Ben has started spending more time looking over each picture and noticing more details.

  • Lizzy

I found this book a bit annoying, and the ending was completely lame. If a daddy bear found a baby bear it would eat him. How come he suddenly came out of a cannon?? Quite a french book. loved the pictures, though the cut outs seem completely random.

  • Andrea

This is a great addition to Chaud's "Bear" series. Which are great bedtime stories because each page is filled with fun things to find and becomes kids. This particular one introduces Bear to his new little sister in a way that still focuses on Bear and his important place in the family as the family makes this Changes.

  • Megan

I've been a big fan of the previous Bear books by Chaud. I didn't like the circus theme in this one with bears riding bicycles and jumping through hoops of fire. I'm not a fan of wild animals in circuses in real life or books. :( There's EVEN a woman in a bear fur coat and hat in it. EEK!

Readers follow the curious Little Bear through interactive cutouts in this richly detailed, panoramically illustrated, rollicking adventure. The third installment in this delightful series from France.

  • Selena

The illustrations in this book is what will keep the kids (and yes me too) coming back for more. It's a Where's Waldo with bears. Plus there's a sweet story of a little bear's adventure that leads to many surprises for him.
