This is such a fun and funny book. It is clever, witty, has great ghosts, mysteries, wonderful dialogue, and so much humor thrown in that I was giggling like a school girl.
The narrator was so good at talking as if she was terrified with a trembling voice, and still say something snarling or witty, and continue with the terrified conversation! She made it sound hilarious! This narrator really took this book far! I don't think it would have been as good with just me reading it. She made it really Pop!! Great job!!! -
Southern Spirits is perfect for anyone in the mood for a mystery involving paranormal, romance action and fun.

I ended up enjoying this story quite a bit. I decided to pick this book up because I was in the mood for a light, easy read. This book filled that order quite nicely. I caught myself smiling a few times during the story and I just loved the fact that the main character, Verity, has a pet skunk. What really caught my eye with this book was the paranormal aspect. I tend to love to read about anything that falls into that category so I was more than ready for this little ghost story.
Once the mystery in the story really got going, I will admit that I was hooked. I don't read a whole lot of cozy mysteries because all too often, I seem to figure out the mystery before the big reveal. That wasn't the case with this book and I have to admit that I didn't have a clue what was really going on until it was revealed. I just loved the Ghostbusters and Poltergeist references in the story.
I liked the characters in this book. Verity had a lot of spunk and just deals with things as they happen. She doesn't want to sell her house and is trying to avoid it but she is coping. Ellis was an all around good guy. He is a police officer who is also in the middle of rehabbing a property. He needs a little bit of help with his ghost problem so he enlists the help of Verity. The ghost, Frankie, was actually a nice guy who really tried to help Verity despite his criminal lifestyle.
I didn't love everything about the book. I couldn't believe how easily Verity accepted that she now had a ghost following her around and how quickly he talked her into doing things. I also didn't think that she would be so quick to accept any kind of offer from her fiance's brother. I didn't let either of those things bother me as I read the story.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries with a paranormal focus. This was a great book for anyone looking for something that's fun without being series. This is the first book by Angie Fox that I have had a chance to read. I will probably continue on with this series.

Southern Spirits is book one in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series by Angie Fox and narrated by Tavia Gilbert.
Verity is brave, witty, and not above putting herself in danger to help those that need it; even if they are dead. She’s a southern belle with all the charm and modern progressiveness.
When we start Verity is in a predicament. If you discovered your fiancee cheating would you have gone throw with the wedding? I’d have done what she did, yet the family she was tangled up with are considered the local society big wigs and the head of the house is trying to rune her.
In comes Frankie our inappropriate gangster ghost. It was totally an accident that Verity ends up with this character as her roommate, but I love it. He adds a lot of humor, character, and silliness to the story.
Ellis is her exes brother and the middle son of the family who made her life difficult. He choose to go his own way and is one of the local police officers. He’s not fond of Verity in the beginning.
I was captivated the moment I started listening to this novel. It was a lot of fun! The characters are hilarious, fun, and easy to connect with. Verity is in a situation that exceeds her and yet she’s determined to go all the way! The mystery is a red herring and keeps you guessing. The story isn’t a romance, yet Verity gets to know Ellis a little more. I liked that Ellis gradually realized who Verity is and I’m curious to see what might happen. I also loved the interactions with all the ghosts we meet and the investigation was entertaining.
Audio: This series is narrated by Tavia Gilbert. She is talented. All the characters came alive. I loved the voices for each character. They fit them and the southern charm and dialogue just jumped out.
I bought this audio a while back when Audible had a first in the series sale. I can’t believe it took me this long to discover the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series. I devoured this audio and I had so much fun that I can’t wait to start the next book. I highly recommend this paranormal cozy mystery.

This is me after finishing Southern Spirits
Angie Fox is a new to me author, so I was a bit sceptical starting Southern Spirits, but couple of pages in, my scepticism was forgotten and now, I can't wait for the sequel to come out.
The story is easy to read and follow, and quite addictive. From the first page on, it gripped my attention, I had to see what would happen next and I kept thinking just one more page or just this chapter.
I ended up reading till the wee hours.
We see everything with Verity's eyes and she's such a lovable heroine. She accidentally finds herself in a strange situation, but she takes it all in stride, never allowing anyone or anything to hold her down. She kept her wits about her at all times and she saved herself out of lot of dangerous situations. Of course, she did kinda put herself in danger in the first place, but I chose not to hold that against her. Verity is also the first character I've read about that had a skunk for a pet. I wonder how that works. Can they really be domesticated? I'll have to google it later.
Frankie, Verity's friendly ghost was a blast! I adore him. They had a rocky start, but they quickly overcame their differences and became sort of partners in crime, but also friends who cared and looked after each other. And can I just say how cool it is that he's 1920s gangster! The scene where he starts shooting his ghostly revolver trying to cover for Verity was epic!
I have absolutely no complaints about the plot or the characters (which is a rare thing), but what this book could use is some editing.
Southern Spirits was such an enjoyable read. Entertaining, funny and fast paced, with characters you can't but love, it's just a perfect read when you're feeling down or just want to forget about the outside world. It's my definition of a feel good book.

Confession time, I made a huge boo boo and started this series from the second book by mistake, oops! So it's with great delight that I've finally got the back story on Verity, Ellis and of course Frankie the frequently inappropriate and very non PC ghost. Set in the south this southern belle may be a thoroughly modern miss but she's also brave, witty and not above putting herself in danger to help those who need it be they dead or alive!
Now let's be honest if you discovered your fiancée was a cheating scum bag would you go through with the wedding? No? Well alrighty then you already understand Verity and the way she thinks but the family she's tangled up with are kind of nothing like mere plebs and are considered by local society as anything but hoi polloi and right now Verity is in deep do do as she struggles not only to pay for the expensive wedding she ditched but keep both her home and good name to boot! So imagine discovering a ghost on her property , one who is kind of stuck but after a somewhat inauspicious beginning this odd partnership takes Verity places she just doesn't believe . Well would you believe in being a psychic detective ? Because that's just what ghost hunting Verity is about to become.
This is such a funny read and I love Verity's personality but don't think it's just fluff because it's quick moving too with a tight plot featuring the odd red herring and an adventure that kept me guessing. Plus with Frankie around its chock full of interesting side notes and characters. Not exactly a romance but as Verity gets to know Ellis you just know it's going to make for rather uncomfortable get togethers at Christmas time ! I really liked this book and happily recommend the whole series -
A cozy mystery with ghosts!
Verity is about to lose the house her grandmother left her because she is dead broke, sued by the cheating rot-crawler she was going to marry. It didn't help that she dumped him at the altar, and to make sure he got the message, showed up at the reception to smash cake into his face. Unfortunately his family is prominent in Sugarland, and so she's pretty much toast.
While cleaning the last of the items after her auction, she finds an odd urn, tries to scrub it out . . . and discovers too late that she is now haunted by a Prohibition-era gangster named Frankie. With Frankie's help, she ends up getting involved in a local mystery, along with handsome sheriff Ellis . . . brother to afore-mentioned sleazy ex-fiance. Naturally Verity has to keep that quiet, as the two go about exploring a very dangerous area that seems to be haunted not only by ghosts but a poltergeist.
Sometimes ghosts need therapy, too.
With her pet skunk Lucy, her awesome librarian sister Melody, and Ellis, Verity is ready to tackle this world and the next to solve the mystery. It's funny, sweet, scary, and very vivid, the first of a series that I'm not surprised is becoming more popular as each new one comes out. -

They're things I find hard to resist.
Put all three in a book and I'll probably buy it but calling a spade a spade, nine times out of ten they end up somewhere between monotonous and infuriating.
Then along comes a book like this which reminds me just how great the genre can be. -
I should have been reading other books, but this one was so tempting that I picked it up instead. I have to say I enjoyed it a lot, which is kind of a relief since I spent my own money on it. My library doesn't have any books by Ms. Fox and I've never found any at the used book store that I frequent.
I do like these paranormal books set in the American South. I'm thinking of Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse, Molly Harper's Jane Jameson, and Faith Hunter's Jane Yellowrock. This series has more in common tone-wise with Molly Harper's writing. Sookie & Jane Yellowrock face more supernatural threat and have to be tougher than Verity Long in this book. Verity reminds me of Sookie though because of her financial difficulties that she is trying hard to solve. But all of these women have to navigate Southern society, with its gossipy ways, its expectations of politeness, and its clear gender roles. They also have to deal with their own relatives and with judgy small town communities.
Maybe because I grew up in a small community, I really identify with these main characters. Since I chose not to marry or have children, I know what it is to not fit into usual small town expectations and learning to deflect the criticism that haunts women who won't conform. Somehow the women who do what's expected feel threatened by those of us who know we wouldn't be happy in those roles and who go our own way. Men too, for that matter. I'm fine with them doing what they want, but I expect to be granted the same freedom.
I think that I'm being drawn to romances right now because our city has been shut down for 70+ days and I'm missing my contact with people. Reading romance reminds me that physical closeness is possible! -

Months ago, I downloaded this book on a whim and it has been gathering electronic dust until a few days ago when I decided to give it a try. Fortunately, it has turned out to be a nice surprise.
Author Angie Fox’s quick-thinking female protagonist Verity was the main reason I enjoyed this book. She is quick without being snarky, a trait most fictional characters find hard to master. The humorous asides began on the first page of the book: “Grandma had said it made gossip travel even faster, the way they built houses so close together these days. I always told her that the good citizens of Sugarland, Tennessee, needed no help.”
The idea of having a ghostly sidekick is not new, though Ms. Fox handles the relationship in a fresh way, devising what the dead gangster Frankie could do to help Verity as well as developing drawbacks that curtailed his power.
Ms. Fox skillfully draws out the story of Verity’s personal life through witty references to past events. The mystery side of the plot was good, although the very end was reminiscent of a Scoobydoo episode. While I might have wished for a bit more believability, the strength of the author’s prose helped me through. The love interest part of the plot was passable. I found it difficult to accept the picture of the tough-talking Verity acting so impulsively at times, but overall, I was still happy with the book and will probably move on to the next tale in the series. Four stars. -

Wow! Just wow! I finally found a book that took me out of my reading slump! And, what made me happier is that it's a series! Which means I could still be with these amazing characters for a longer time.
Paranormal romance is the genre that made me fall in love with reading and this book just reminded me why I fell in love with it at the first place. It's the only genre that could give me the total escape from reality that I want and for this reason, I have higher criteria of satisfaction when it comes to these types of books. Fortunately for me, Southern Spirits gave me the satisfaction I need. It's an easy fun read with a little bit of drama, comedy, mystery and of course, a touch of romance. Verity, Ellis and Frankie are all amazing characters that you'll surely fall in love with.

All Things Urban Fantasy
SOUTHERN SPIRITS is a fun and surprisingly fast read. I enjoy some quirk in these light paranormal stories and this book is full of quirks from Verity's pet skunk to the many types of ghosts with their own odd issues and relationships. The story follows Verity on her attempt to solve a decades old murder mystery in order to get money to pay off her debt and keep her house. There is a ton of action and suspense along with a pretty clever bad guy reveal that I did not see coming at first. With a decades old murder to solve, Verity ends up going into lots of old haunted buildings and I spent half the time mentally telling Verity to not go down into the very scary, dark room!
I like Verity and admire her courage in being able to adjust to seeing and communicating with ghosts all of a sudden. The secondary characters I loved most were the ghosts she encountered with fun backstories and interesting lives even in their afterlives. The way Verity can 'see' the ghost world is really cool too. I had a hard time warming up to Ellis, Verity's love interest. In part it was due to his being so horrible to Verity in the beginning but as the story went on and they were supposed to grow closer to some sort of romance I couldn't buy it. Perhaps I need to see more interactions between them to really buy more than them having grown from more than mild respect which is what I had for Ellis at the end of SOUTHERN SPIRITS.
One of the touches I love with Angie Fox's stories is her addition of adorable pets. Her Accidental Demon Slayer series had a talking dog, and now The Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series has an adorable pet skunk who is the impetus for some very hilarious moments. SOUTHERN SPIRITS is a good start to a lighthearted paranormal mystery series with some loveable characters, spooky sights, and a kindling romance. -
Assisted by a ghost, Verity Long goes on a treasure hunt to pay off her debts and along the way solves some cold-case murders.
In this fast-paced, paranormal mystery, Fox gives us a quick thinking, witty protagonist we really care about and utterly delightful secondary characters. Fox's Southern setting are vivid. And her humor is spot on.

Poor Verity Long just can't catch a break. After leaving her fiancé at the alter on the heels of some disturbing circumstances, Verity was forced to pay for the wedding that never happened, thanks to her bitter and vindictive would-have-been mother-in-law. Verity discovers that Ellis isn't like his family, the uppity, holier-than-thou Wydells. Together, they made a great team and there's even a hint of romance blossoming.
At its heart, Southern Spirits is a cozy mystery infused with a touch of the paranormal with it's ghostly characters, peppered with humor, and based in a fictional southern town steeped with history and charm that's often found in real southern cities. Fox's no-nonsense, simplistic writing style made this such a quick, enjoyable read. Despite the simplicity, Fox leaves nothing to the imagination. Every last detail was given, leaving nothing to be assumed by the reader. The characters, both living and dead, were complex and dimensional, the town was richly drawn, and the murder mystery wasn't all that easy to figure out, which is always a huge plus. One of my favorite aspects of this story were the ghostly residents. While most of them were friendly, they certainly weren't Casper. Unless Casper was a gangster with a bullet hole in his head.
All told, Southern spirits was a fun, fast-paced mystery full of delightful characters and humor. Angie Fox was a new-to-me author when I stared this book, and I am so excited to have stumbled across her work. In fact, I loved it so much that upon finishing, I immediately went and purchased her other series, the Demon Slayer series. I have a feeling that Angie Fox is quickly going to become one of my favorites, and one that I look forward to with each new release.

Angie Fox's new series Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries. I enjoy her other series Demon Slayer, so I thought I would give it a try. I'm so glad I did.
Verity Long is a little down on her luck. That will happen when you refuse to marry your fiancé, who happens to be from one of the most influential families in your small town. It turns out that a man scorned can be just as vindictive as a woman. The only thing Verity has left from her ex-fiancé is a dusty old vase. Who knew it held ashes? Now, the ghost isn't happy to be trapped, and Verity can see and communicate with the spirit world with the help of said ghost. If Verity's life wasn't interesting enough, her ex-finance's brother, Ellis, needs her help using her new found abilities. Can Verity set her ghost free? Will Verity and Ellis be able to work together despite the family history?
Verity is one tough cookie. Life may get her down, but Verity won't be down long. She has an easy going personality which comes in handy since wherever Verity goes trouble is not far behind. Did I mention she has an interesting pet? Only Verity would have a pet skunk, Lucy. Love her! This was a fun, suspense-filled read that I did not want to put down. I would definitely recommend. -

I've had this one on my TBR pile for a while. I almost DNF'd in the beginning. However, I kept reading and I'm glad I did. There quite a few reviews (1 star - 5 star) for this book and are much better in explaining the details. I liked the tension between Ellis and Verity - and while it might have been obvious to other readers, I was surprised about the "villain." I also liked that Verity actually communicates with the ghosts. Not quite sure why some move on and some don't. I will read the next one because of Ellis. I've got my eye on him. -
I listened to this one on audio and Tavia Gilbert does a great job reading, as usual.
I gotta say though, She needs to not try to force a southern accent. It was like Dick Van Dyke's cockney accent in Mary Poppins. Meh.
I really liked this one until the obviousness of the villain started to annoy me. So just 3 stars. I do plan to read the next one too though.
This was kinda quirky and humorous.
At first I was put off by the story set up in the beginning. Verity was going to marry the youngest son of the most important family in town, until she found out he was cheating and that he tried to molest her sister. His witch of a mother gets the local judge to charge all the wedding costs to Verity which is so many thousands that she was forced to sell the contents of her house to pay it off. Now she will have to sell the house as well, unless she can come up with the last 20 grand.
This part of the story really bothered me because it made no sense. All she had to do was tell people about the cheating and her sister. But she doesn't. She doesn't tell about her sister because the ex fiancé threatens to get her sister fired from her part time job at the library....
So lets think about this... her sister's PART TIME job is more important than Verity losing her house and all her worldly possessions.
Does that make sense to you? Cause it sure didn't to me.
On top of that, her ex fiancé is going around town saying she dumped him because she found out he wasn't as rich as his oldest brother. So we get to hear about people constantly judging her harshly.
Ironically the H in the story is the middle brother who decided not to follow the family tradition, and instead became a cop.
A cop who owns a haunted property with a poltergeist.
Fortunately Verity has recently come into some psychic ghost talking skills. (long, but humorous story) and Ellis (the cop) has $20 grand that he can pay her to get rid of the ghosts.
The villain was obvious from the first time he's introduced. The author tries to muddy the waters with a red herring, but I just assumed they were in cahoots.
Anyways, the romance isn't the center of the story, and there's no justice for Verity regarding Ellis's little brother's lies and the money she owes his mother. Hopefully in one of the future books?

Verity is a bright, plucky southern gal in danger of losing the family home through a nasty relationship breakdown. But Verity’s got a can do attitude and when she runs into a ghost, Frankie (quite the character himself) suddenly she sees the possibility of saving her home. Before you can pour the sweet tea, Verity is off trying to solve a mystery in Sugarland, the small town where she lives in Tennessee. By the final chapter, everything gets wrapped up neatly, cosy style.
One thing I didn’t understand about this book is why the character Ellis was called a bad-boy in the blurb. He certainly didn’t seem like the resident bad-boy to me but I pushed it aside as it wasn’t important in the scheme of things. What is important is that you suspend your logic to a degree when reading this story! :P But this is true of many novels, not just cosy mysteries. Just lean into the fun, the mystery, and enjoy.
There is a hint of romance, but the real hook in Southern Spirits (as stated in the blurb) is Verity’s “supernatural sidekick”, Frankie, in tandem with Verity’s “ability to see spirits”. And I loved it! Supernatural and paranormal stories appeal to me anyway, plus this is the genre in which I am trying my hand as a writer in my spare time. So, admittedly this story was an easy sell in my case.
There is only one instance of the F-word being used in this novel and all violence is dealt with in a way that isn’t too confronting, even though there are murders, other violence, a nasty ex (and some of his family, too..ugh), and ghostly tantrums.
It’s is an enjoyable read with a cute story - many points at which I chuckled to myself - and a pacy plot that swept me through the book easily. Had I not had other commitments, I could happily have finished this book in one sitting. Well, with breaks to make tea, anyway. The book is just over 250 pages - on the short side - but that is common for cosy novels.
Southern Spirits is the first book in the

I read and enjoyed this book 5 years ago when I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to review an arc. I went into this re-read knowing that I liked the book and that I have also enjoyed the narrator's work in the past.
I didn't remember any of the details of this book from my prior read and I found that I really had a good time with this book the second time around. The characters were very well done and I was captivated by the mystery. Tavia Gilbert did an excellent job with the narration which helped make this re-read a wonderful experience. I cannot wait to start listening to the next book in the series.

A fun ghost story
I started to read this book last night and finished it this afternoon. This was a fun easy read that I really enjoyed. -

Our heroine Verity, accidentally trap Frankie, a ghost of 1920's gangster who died because someone shot him between his eyes. He was well dress and wearing Panama hat, and talked like a typical baddie from a vintage movie, it's funny after you pass the spooky bits when he appeared.
Frankie not happy when he find out Verity wanted to sell the house, because he was trapped there, but V didn't have a choice, she jilted her bloody cheat ex! Now his local strong first family told her to pay the wedding cost which is a lot and they're too powerful to ignore, poor thing!
But the good thing is Frankie was a baddie when he was alive, he knew few things how to find some money and he can help Verity to see the supernatural part when she needed to.

Oh, Frankie is not the hero, that will be the cheat ex's black sheep brother Ellis, a deputy sheriff who by accident saw what Verity capable of and asked and will pay her If she can help him to removed the ghost in old haunted building he bought!
Don't read at night by yourself, those aren't pretty ghosts. They look like how they were died.
When I read, usually I was sitting on my cozy sofa, telly on, and having nice hot chocolate at night.
Last night, sitting in the dark beside sleeping hubby under the duvet, lol 😂😂.
But it was a fun read and Frankie is awesome! 😂😂
I will certainly continue reading this series!

I heard a lot about Angie Fox and her novels and I remember getting the novel for free some time ago on amazon. Finally finding a little time to get into it, I did not hesitate. And how to resist a ghost story? Impossible!
Verity must handle big changes in her life. She is losing everything she inherited from her grandmother liker her house that she loves more than anything. Why is that? After learning that her fiancé was cheating on her, she abandoned him to the altar. But now, B eau is blackmailing her so she can not tell anyone what happened and passes for the victim of the story. And Verity besides being badly seen by all the inhabitants of the city, must repay the whole marriage. An astronomical sum. Yet she did not expect to manipulate an urn to face the ghost attached to the object. She was even less expecting her ex-fiancé’s brother to ask her to help her to exterminate the ghosts who reside in a house he bought. Although she does not know much, our heroine does not have much choice and must find money as soon as possible. She will ally with the handsome Ellis who hates her, without knowing that the story in which she will fall is much more dangerous than she thought.
I really liked this novel. Verity is in a situation that exceeds her completely and yet she is determined to go all the way! And Frankie? This former gangster who will help our heroine when she needs it? I enjoyed their exchanges. And then there is Ellis … Ah Ellis, charming and yet he comes from a horrible family. I was glad to see that he was gradually realizing who the young woman really was, and I must say that I am very curious to see what it will look like afterwards.
It was a very good novel, I loved the interactions with the ghosts and the investigation of this first novel and I can not wait to discover what the author reserves for the future!
