What could possibly go wrong at a beautiful Oregon vineyard overlooking the ocean? Could the White Cloud Retreat Center on the vineyard, run by a world famous Buddhist Zen Master hold a deep, dark secret? Murder, for one thing, but who could possibly have a motive for killing the beloved Zen Master?

Solving the mystery is the job of Sheriff Mike, ably assisted by his soon-to-be-wife, Kelly, an amateur sleuth, and their two dogs, Rebel and Lady. The vineyard is famous for its White Cloud Pinot Noir wines and the coffee shop that Kelly owns, Kelly’s Koffee Shop, is equally popular with customers looking for good food.

White Cloud Retreat (Cedar Bay Mystery #3) Reviews

After reading the second book in this series, Murder at Jade Cove, I dove right into this one. Ms. Harman's small town community of Cedar Bay is charming and the type of town that I would love to move into. Kelly again inserts her self into one of Mike's cases as she finds a friend, Zen Master Scott, dead at his Zen retreat. The plot moved smoothly, a few suspects and a surprising twist at the reveal. I still have mixed feelings about Kelly's "white lies" to Mike. This type of behavior just doesn't sit well with me when it comes to people who are supposed to be in a committed relationship.

"White Cloud Retreat (Cedar Bay Cozy Mystery Book 3)" by Dianne Harman showcases this lovely and original series fully set up and benefitting from its established group of likeable and memorable characters (including dogs).
The Zen Master of the White Cloud Retreat from the title has been killed. Culinary ace and hobby crime solver Kelly and her her fiance/local Sheriff Mike are investigating why.
Like in precious instalments of this wonderful and heart-warming series, the investigation is interspersed with family and relationship matters and touches on some fascinating topics, such as pesticides and vineyards.
Very enjoyable, with the added bonus of several delicious recipes.

I enjoyed this book. I have listened to a few books by Dianne Harman and not in the right order, so it was fun to go back in time to listen to this one, it also goes to prove that Dianne's books are great standalone mysteries. I liked this book because even though the murder victim was a nice guy the author still managed to come up with believable and possible motives for his death. The characters are interesting and aided by two loveable pups. I also liked the way the author concluded the story with a round up of what happened to the characters.
With her marriage to Sheriff Mike drawing closer, Kelly decides she needs to take a break from all the wedding planning by visiting the White Cloud Retreat center. On a meditative walk in the woods, she stumbles over the Zen Masters dead body. She receives a warning that both she and Mike are in danger. Can she help keep Mike safe by finding the killer of her friend? The Zen Master was a nice guy but even nice guys make enemies like rival wine sellers, could the brothers be jealous of how well the retreats Pinot Noir sells? What about the retreats staff? Could somebody really want to become the next master and willing to kill for it? What about his own brother? Who has already been in jail? Can Kelly help narrow the suspect list before the big day?
I liked the narrator. She did a good job of bringing the story to life by giving each character there own voice.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

An entertaining story, suffers a little with cliched dialogue but has a good plotline. The author has a style of mystery which she is good at the this is a typical example. The murder, then flashback to introduce several good suspects and then add a little bit of danger to the main characters for the climax. A good ending and epilogue. I found the narrator to be OK but would have liked a bit more of a range of voices. I received a complimentary copy from the narrator and an leaving a honest voluntary review

FYI, when I've had a truly busy and/or stressful day, Dianne Harman's books have become my go-to for relaxation. So, mainly sweet tempered Zen Master Scott Monroe has been murdered; I say mainly because he gets very angry if anyone mistreats the Center's vineyard. The list of suspects all have means, motive and ample opportunity; but Kelli and Mike must contend with a true psychopath who could become the ending to their lives before the wedding ever takes place.

  • Gena - My Book Reviews for You

This series is one of my top favorites of Dianne’s! Kelly and Mike are always enjoyable characters in the books. Kelly is looking for some needed rest and relaxation before her upcoming wedding. But in the process, she finds a dead body and gets involved in the investigation. The dogs star in this book as well. And Kelly’s good friends from her Koffee Shop. Lots of suspects throughout the story. And there’s some humor and some added surprises along the way as well!

    White Cloud Retreat Book3

A winery and organic vineyard is the scene of this mystery. White Coud Retreat owned and managed by a Zen Master killed, was it one of his students, a nearby vineyard in touch with the Mafia or the Zen Master's brother? Ms Dianne Harman takes the reader from the opening page to the Epilogue to discover the killer and the suspects moving through this adventure.

    Wonderful

Really enjoyed this one from the series but I really hope that he rest of the series is not having Kelly finding the body. The pattern of the series doesn't change as for the main two characters and their dogs. Enjoy reading and can not out it down but so far everything is the same with the story other than the bodies.

This is the 3rd in the series. The main characters are Kelly and her fiance Sheriff Mike. Kelly was out at he retreat when she discovered the body of Zen Master Scott. She called Mike and reported the murder. Then they tried to figure out who could have wanted him dead. At first there was no one and then it seemed like everybody did. Can they figure this out ?

  • Elizabeth Evans

    I almost had that one!

Rebel and Lady are more precious than ever and mike and Kelly are more involved in murders than ever! But together they are an awesome four! Looking forward to more in this series!!!

I enjoy this series Cedar Bay Mystery very much. The interaction between the characters is great. It is a fast fun read. I am working my way through the series with a bundle of books 1-6 so I am now half way. On to book #4.

    Yikes!

Talk about a completely psychotic killer! This one definitely belongs in the looney bin and Kelly lineups the sheriff. Rebel is a great dog and definitely deserves filet mignon the rest of his life~

  • Lee

The author led us down many paths of “who killed Scott“. I like this story concept because you did not know until the end who the killer was. I think Ms Harman is a great writer! I really enjoyed the story!!

    A good one

No spoilers, but it was a great book. I like how Rebel is teaching Lady how to guard. The next book should be a good one with the wedding.
