The great Mahatma Gandhi cloned? Now sixteen years old and about to go on a moral crusade in the name of world peace? There is a frenzy of activity around the world as governments, political groups, and a science laboratory engaged in the potentially lucrative business of human cloning, scramble to locate the boy and the scientific data generated by the apparently successful experiment. For some, Gandhi's very name gives them new dreams, new hopes, and new energies. But for others, Gandhi, and the powerful moral force he represents, is a dangerous threat to their ambitions, a threat that must be eliminated at all cost.

Into this maelstrom steps McGill University history professor Relph Coggins, the only person who knows the whereabouts of the boy. Representatives of these groups - the United States, the Palestinians, India, Israel, Pakistan, and Hindu extremists - all cozy up to Coggins, and some are even willing to pay him a handsome fee which, they hope, will lead to the boy. Among those who visit Coggins are two bitter rivals in the business of international power politics and assassination: Sholmo Becker, a Mossad operative, and Santoshi Kumar, a Hindu extremist determined to repeat history.

Who will reach the boy first? Has the cloning experiment really been a success? Will the boy stand by and allow himself to be the pawn of rival groups, or will he take matters into his own hands? Can Coggins control events and save the boy? And what is the meaning of parenthood in the coming age human cloning?

This speculative fiction novel is the first in the RELPH COGGINS SERIES. All too human, middle-aged, anti-heroic, and jaded over the disappearance of his Quebec separatist wife, Coggins, the protagonist in each of these novels, struggles to manage competing demands, chief among then being the need to make more money to satisfy a lifestyle beyond his reach and his disappointment with academics, the academic life, and students who were more interested in the music of Madonna than books. Coggins resorts to romantic relationships with his female graduate students and the occasional lie to adjust to this situation - with the usual resulting complications, Through this novel and forthcoming novels, we trail Coggins as he negotiates today's complex and contentious world from which many of his problems arise.
