Working round the clock for her country.

1941: As a nurse in the rubble-strewn East end of London, Daisy Driscoll is a first-hand witness to the trauma of the Second World War. The cacophony of guns and bombs assailing the dark empty streets of London are now the soundtrack to her life. All she can do during the Blitz is to protect herself – and do her best to help others survive.

Yet this isn’t the only war Daisy is fighting – there’s a battlefield in her heart as she deals with her husband’s cruel betrayal. As Daisy tries to forge a new life without him, she is determined not to become dependent on another man – but first she must face her very deepest fears…

THE NURSE'S WAR is the unforgettable sequel to THE GIRL FROM COBB STREET by Merryn Allingham.

I didn't realise that this was part of a trilogy when I read it- and enjoyed it as a stand alone book. The back story was well woven into the story. I have the first book on my kindle- so I'm keen to read that now!

Daisy is back in the UK after a tragic spell in India where she suffered lots of mishaps and then lost her husband. She's working as a nurse and the story gives great details about life in London during the war years, life in the nurses home at this time and her past and present life.

She has an uncomfortable feeling that she is being watched at times and she meets someone she'd rather was still in her past and this makes her life take a disturbing turn. Is she in danger, will she allow herself to listen to her heart, can she move on and leave her life in India behind.

This book had it all- a lovely historical adventure. You were immersed in the era and with the characters she meets. The scene at the Ritz was very evocative and made me want to read more. Luckily having discovered that this is part of a trilogy I can return to the story soon (I hope!).

With many thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for the chance to read this one.

I read the girl from Cobb street I really enjoyed it and as soon as I'd finished it ordered the other 2 books online and started reading this as soon as it arrived. It was even better than the 1st one, and I flew through it in 24hours.

It is well written and quite tense in places, but Merryn's superb writing really transports you to the places she's described. Great book Merryn, onto the last one....I don't know if I want this to end!!!

The Nurse's War is the sequel to The Girl from Cobb Street by Merryn Allingham, which I read as a stand alone novel. However Ms Allingham has weaved a closely knit story that cleverly entwines the key points from book one for this not to matter too much. The first story explodes with a flash of intrigue and suspense with student nurse Daisy Driscoll being chased on her way home from work and sets both the pace and tone for this romance/suspense. Daisy's husband is presumed dead, but is he? Who's walking in her shadow just out of sight and just where does India and Japan come into it? Set in war torn London The Nurses War portrays the lives of normal working people during the Blitz. It evokes long lost memories of a crumbling city and the harrowing times that were suffered by many with both fortitude and determination. From taking shelter miles underground in tube stations to using Elastoplast to patch shoes together this is a book that will long remain in the memory for both it's setting, powerful writing and fast paced plot line. I look forward to Ms Allingham's next book

Another good read in the Daisy trilogy. Fast paced, good plots and covers Daidys nursing in WW2 and her ongoing will she/won't she with Grayson. Roll on book 3 in August.

  • Mel

    another light read.

I do like the story but not the best one for me due to it's slow pace story, in the 2/3 part of the book it somehow explained some characters. The thing is I did not start the book 1 first because it's not available at the bookstore but I still love the part where they solve the other person who he really is.

Second book in the trilogy about Daisy Driscoll. In this book she is back in England and training as a nurse. It is 1941 and she has an unpleasant surprise in store. There is involvement with the Special Operations Team in London and danger for Daisy as she uncovers more secrets.
