This book is pretty awesome. Michael Symon is another of my favorite chefs. He doesn't just 'go all Iron Chef' either.

He manages for me, to come across and like-able and interesting. In this book he takes five fresh ingredients that cook in around five minutes and puts them together very well. I love seasonal cooking because let's face it...that is when food is at it's best. He does advocate local ingredients also..that is going to make these dishes just pure yum.

I would have loved a few more pictures of the foods he prepares just because I love some foodie porn pics.

Here are some of the ones that he does include:
(Some are taken with my crappy phone so excuse them)

Celebrated chef, restaurateur, cookbook author Michael Symon always seems to be having such a good time. With the lift of an eyebrow, and a mile-wide smile, he lets you know that he's got something terrific and tasty to share with you--lucky you. "Michael Symon's 5 in 5 for Every Season: 165 Quick Dinners, Sides, Holiday Dishes, and More" is the author's follow up to his bestselling "Michael Symon's 5 in 5". This new book expands on the "5 in 5" premise--5 fresh ingredients + 5 minutes of heat = fabulous food--with recipes organized by season and a fifth chapter for holidays. Symon explains that seasonal cooking is "enjoying food at its freshest, healthiest, and most affordable". He also encourages readers to shop locally, support local growers, and join a CSA--community supported agriculture association. He theorizes that with five fresh ingredients and a well-stocked pantry, it's possible to provide quick, healthy, affordable meals that will help to gather the family back together around the home table. He provides a helpful list of the basics to set up your own well-fortified home pantry. The food is fantastic, the photos are fabulous, and Symon's infectious grin appears here and there throughout the book. Here's a recipe sampler: "Grilled Skirt Steak with Mushroom Gravy"; "Sweet Onion-Smothered Pork Chops"; "Shrimp with Snow Peas, Garlic & Red-Pepper Flakes"; "Spinach Salad with Ham Steak and Fried Egg"; "Sweet Corn Fritters"; "Grilled Chicken Tenders Buffalo Style"; "Pork Schnitzel with Peach Salad"; "Spinach Salad with Strawberries, Red Onion, and Feta"; "Parmesan Zucchini Fries"; "Spaghetti Puttanesca"; "Vegetable Stir Fry"; "Pecan-Crusted Chicken with Fresh Cranberry Sauce"; "Kielbasa with Apples & Onions"; "Thai-Style Shrimp Salad"; "Kale & Apple Salad with Maple Cider Dressing"; "Salmon with Kale, White Wine & Lemon"; "Glazed Carrots with Pecans & Nutmeg"; "Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Bacon"; and "Mashed Potato Cakes with Parmesan". MICHAEL SYMON is a cohost of ABC’s The Chew and, on Food Network, an Iron Chef on Iron Chef America and a host of All-Star Academy. He is the chef and co-owner of Lola and Lolita in Cleveland, Roast in Detroit, and numerous locations of B Spot Burgers and Bar Symon. He is the author of Michael Symon’s Live to Cook, Michael Symon’s Carnivore, and Michael Symon’s 5 in 5. DOUGLAS TRATTNER is also the co-author of "Michael Symon's Carnivore: 120 Recipes for Meat Lovers" and "Michael Symon's 5 in 5: 5 Fresh Ingredients + 5 Minutes = 120 Fantastic Dinners".

Organized into seasons, these meals are "plentiful" with year round basics and local produce. Beginning with what is in your pantry, the opening season is the spring. Michael entices you out of the winter and into the farmers' markets. Keeping meals "light" and "quick and easy" here are a few that interested our family:
Spring Pea "Guacamole" with grilled bread and radish (pg.14): perfect entree for any gathering, especially book clubs
Grilled chicken breast with shaved fennel and orange salad (pg.23): zesty mixture of goodness
Grilled "Skirt" steak with mushroom gravy (pg.26): okay... this is for the men and for me... the gravy made my mouth water especially "yummy" for those spring rainy evenings
Couscous with peas, asparagus, and Parmesan (pg. 55): such a simple side dish or what's for lunch

I agree with Michael that there is nothing better than a "sun-warmed tomato... sprinkled with a little sea salt." Summertime is not just fast meals, it is always the best when it comes straight from your garden onto your table:
Grilled zucchini rolls with Feta and almonds (pg.61): yum with a zing (definitely one for our book club)
Spicy Salami, cantaloupe, and mint salad (pg.86): add the chilled Greek yogurt and summer flavors will zizzle
Spinach salad with strawberries, red onions, and Feta (pg.102): this could be my lunch all summer long
Warm brown butter vanilla blueberries (pg.109): over vanilla ice cream on a hot summer night... oh yeah!

Winter is all about the comfort food... and of course a good book! What is inspiring me to rethink some "old favorites" is Michael's tantalizing idea to add citrus zest and juices to the winter gloom.

Rigatoni with pulled chicken and Feta (pg.171): simple yes, but so inviting
Chicken cutlets with Swiss Chard and pomegranate (pg.178): breaded chicken served on top of a Swiss Chard salad, yum!
Chicken breasts with bacon and Brussel Sprouts (pg.184): its the flavors cooked to perfection and the Dijon mustard that brings flavor to a new level
Butternut squash couscous with mint and almonds (pg.204): this is what's cooking for our fall book club

Is anyone hungry? These recipes are quick to prepare. Easy to cook. Tantalizing to your taste buds. The only spoiler with this cook book, is that some of the recipes have ingredients that might not fit your budget or your family. The proof of a good recipe, is in the making... switch it out and Michael's recipe has now become your own!

Enjoy browsing, cooking, and discovering tasty newness for your table,

I loved the idea of this—five fresh, seasonal ingredients that can be cooked in five minutes. I work eight hours a day (occasionally 10-12) and don’t want to spend my evening cooking. I’d like to make something healthy and fresh in less than thirty minutes.

So, I picked this up and chose three recipes from the fall/winter categories. I chose one “sketchy” sounding one, one I knew HAD to be good, and one I wasn’t sure on.

    Pork & Cranberries
I wasn’t sure on this one, but the thought of Thanksgiving cranberries had me like, yeah. The ingredients were easy to find (oranges, jalapeno, ginger, cranberries). Prep took about fifteen minutes to mince the jalapeno, juice and zest the oranges and grate the ginger. The verdict? 2/5. The cranberries were SO bitter that we couldn’t even eat them….we just ate the pork (which was delish).

Pulled Chicken, Rigatoni & Feta Cheese
I had a 12-hour day, so the husband made this one. He says it was super easy and he liked how easy the directions were. The only thing that was off was the serving size—we made a GIANT pot of pasta using these directions and it easily served 8 rather than 4. It tasted alright, though! I think 3tbsp of salt in the pasta is a little much. I’d rate this one 3/5.

    Pork & Gingered Plums
This one sounded sketchy, but I think you have to try the sketchy ones to see if a cookbook is all it’s cracked up to be. Believe it or not, this one was my favorite. Husband also prepped and cooked this one. The pork was great, and the plums were weird in a good way. The cilantro really added the final touch it needed to balance out the sweet.

Overall, I wasn’t that happy with this cookbook. I rated it a 3/5. Maybe my tastes aren’t that refined or something, but I wasn’t a huge fan of what I had.

Great, simple recipes from an Iron Chef! In the past I've tested other cookbooks by chefs claiming that dinner will be ready in 10 minutes, and 45 min later I'm still putting it all together! These recipes truly do use 5 (ok, around 5) simple ingredients, and do cook very quickly, and the few I've prepared have been delicious. I can't wait to check out the original "5 in 5," although this one includes several recipes that use Brussels sprouts and bacon, and kielbasa and beer, so that's hard to beat in my book!

  • Ashley Flynn

These recipes are very simple and require few ingredients, although many of the same ingredients appear over and over again (mustard is everywhere). Many of the ingredients aren't ones I favor, and the recipes were so simple you don't really even need the book. There are only a couple of recipes in here I am likely to try. I was a little disappointed as I love Michael Symon, but I think it's a good book for the right cook.

  • Fullfaun Faun

    really great

  • Darien

Great reference for quick and easy seasonal cooking.

  • Patricia A Butler

This is an excellent cookbook for family meals. Has great meals that are easy to prepare.

  • Michelle Hankes

I'm a big fan of Food Network shows (and cookbooks...but, I think that's obvious by my growing cookbook collection). I have learned quite a bit just by paying attention to some of these incredibly creative chefs. Putting many of the reality-type cooking shows aside, I have learned so much about basic knife skills, how to put certain flavors together, and simply create an elegant dish for any occasion.

However, one chef I haven't seemed to have followed quite as much is Michael Symon. I've seen him on Iron Chef America and known him as the guy with this crazy, infectious laugh who can turn deadly serious in an instant (particularly, when it comes to tasting and presenting food). But, other than that, I haven't had a chance to really experience his style - on TV or via a cookbook.

    Until now.

Symon is co-host of a popular chef-driven foodie talk show, The Chew. Alongside, Mario Batali, Carla Hall, Daphne Oz, and Clinton Kelly, Symon cooks up all sorts of madcap food and fun in this popular daytime series. It sounds like a hoot!

    But, I'll be honest.

I've never even seen the show.

It's not that I haven't wanted to, but really, how much time is there in a day? But, I know one thing for sure: Michael Symon can cook.

That's why I chose this new cookbook to check out. It's full of fun, easy, fast dishes based off a segment on The Chew - 5 in 5. Five ingredients, five minutes. Done!

However, let's be honest: no one has a line of prep cooks and kitchen staff waiting with all your ingredients in the wings to get your dish done in five minutes flat. Or do you?

My kitchen staff runs around on four legs with a furry tail who refuses to even do the dishes. So, prep, cook, clean - I get to do it all!

Having said that, Symon is the first to agree - this book is meant to make mealtime fun, easy, and affordably healthy in the shortest amount of time possible. Cooking for the seasons and eating what's ripe at its top peak of freshness. From farm to table. So, prep staff or not, these meals may not be done in five minutes flat, but they can be prepped, cooked, and assembled in less than 20 minutes. From what I perused, most in less than that.

Lots of delicious, simple, and easy recipes, categorized by season, including a holiday category! This book gives you 165 ideas to make fast, easy, healthy foods that require very little effort. Sounds good to me!

I absolutely love the premise of this cookbook - building recipes around the seasonal ingredients available to you at any given time. It's such a great way to think about food! And who better to pull together a cookbook about seasonal cooking! Michael Symon is one of my favorite 'celebrity' chefs! He has such a realism and honesty about him that I find refreshing.

What I most enjoyed about this cookbook is the mix of ingredients explored in the recipes. There are traditional ingredients being offered in new ways and 'new to me' ingredients are sprinkled through in very attainable ways. I love that mix. It helps to give me that confidence to try new things but also know that I can dip in for recipes of ingredients that I already love.

The book itself is nice - a paperback with nice paper, simple design and beautiful photos. I do wish there was a photo of every recipe. There wasn't anything fancy here - just solid design, nice photos and easy to follow recipes. Sometimes simple is the best way!

I am eager to try a number of the recipes ... here are just a few on my try soon list:

Quick Asparagus & Goat Cheese Frittata
    Sweet Corn Fritters
    Fried Stuffed Zucchini Blossoms
Scallops with Chinese Green Beans and Radish
    White Bean Crostini with Arugula
    Rigatoni with Mushrooms and Sage
Orecchiette with Brussels Sprouts and Bacon
Chicken Breasts with Bacon & Brussels Sprouts
    Shaved Brussels Sprouts with Pecorino
    Mashed Potato Cakes with Parmesan

Overall, I really like this cookbook and look forward to jumping in and trying some of the recipes!

Have I mentioned my love of cookbooks? I’m fairly certain that I have. If I haven’t warned you before now about my addiction to cookbooks, allow me to do so now:

I have an unhealthy addiction to cookbooks. I think it’s a rather healthy addiction, myself. But I digress.

The problem that I run into is, I would much rather bake than cook. Which as a wife and a mother, tends to pose a problem. Because…you know…chocolate cake on school mornings is probably not going to win me a big shiny Mommy Badge. So when I heard about Michael Symon’s 5 in 5, I was so excited to take a look.

Michael Symon’s 5 in 5 For Every Season is actually a follow-up to his wildly successful first book, Michael Symon’s 5 in 5. As the book states, each recipe has 5 ingredients, requiring about 5 minutes of heat. One hundred and sixty five dishes that can be made this way? Um, yes please! In the beginning of the book, he outlines how to stock your pantry, which enables you to make every recipe in the book. He also separates the ingredients out by season, which again helps to keep the cost down. Plus it’s so fun to save certain recipes for future trips to Farmer’s Market.

Bottom Line: Fun book, beautiful pictures, budget friendly, yummy food.

Michael is the popular co-host of The Chew. He promised his viewers that they could make simple, easy meals from scratch. This is the second cookbook that he's written with that concept in mind. Taking seasonal ingredients, he created easy to fix, simple meals for the family. The book begins with a short introduction to the concept and the author. It also has a pantry list. The recipes are divided up by season, so the shopper can find the ingredients needed based on the time of year. The last section, Holidays, isn't a season, but fits well with the concept of the book.

Gorgeous, full color photos, colorful fonts, and delicious recipes fill the pages. The recipes have short ingredient lists and short, simple instructions. The little note at the top of each recipe from the author is a nice touch and makes it more personable. The recipes look easy to use and I've enjoyed the ones I tried. There were a few ingredients that will be difficult to get in my small town, but I'm hoping I can substitute. Overall, I was impressed with the presentation and really liked the layout and concept of the book.

  • The Bookend Family

I'm a huge fan of Top Chef, Food Network, and well, food in general, but I'm not the greatest person to be in the kitchen with. Matter of fact, my husband frequently sways me from entering his domain. However, there are days where I insist that I want to create and start pulling out various recipe books with some undefined mission. My husband gauges what he tells me would be something he would want by the level of nightmarish mess I'm likely to make in the process of creating said recipe. With Michael Simon's book, 5 in 5 for Every Season I'm pretty much guaranteed to make a somewhat edible meal, and I'm likely to be able to control my kitchen destruction because there is not a two page list of ingredients I need to make something simply yummy.

Please don't get me wrong, this is not a book for basic cooks. The ingredients may not be many, but they pack a punch and with this book divided by season, you get those fresh farm feelings from each meal. It is really an incredible book! It's full of color photos, step by step recipes, and detailed explanations of how to recreate these fabulous recipes. I highly recommend this book, it has a lot to offer, a wealth of recipes, and it's easy to use.

I don't typically review cookbooks but I really like this one. I've enjoyed watching Michael Symon cook on variosu shows and thought the recipes he made sounded good, I always wanted to try them. This is one of the few cookbooks I have found where I would make most of the recipes, something I rarely find in a cookbook. They all look and sound delicious!

At the beginning of the book there is a list of basic pantry items to have stocked so you can make any recipe, I really liked having this list. The recipes are easy to follow and not overly complicated. They are written is plain, simple steps (there isn't too much information given at one time).

I enjoyed the variety of recipes that he gives in this book. The recipes were broken up by season when the fresh ingredients would be available. I even liked the suggestions he gave what to make with left turkey or ham.

I'm going to look into the other cookbooks Michael Symon has written, I'm sure to find more delicious recipes!

I discovered Michael Symon years ago on Iron Chef America, and I really loved his approach on food, and the meals he prepared. I bought The Chew’s first cookbook, but never owned a Michael Symon cookbook until now. This cookbook is great for families, single people, and especially those who want to eat home-cooked meals without too much labor, and less time in the kitchen. The visuals are beautiful, the variety of recipes can please anyone at the dinner table, and I love that there are a selection of recipes for each season, as well as holidays.

I received this cookbook through Blogging for Books for reviewing purposes.

"Michael Symon's 5 in 5 for Every Season" is a great addition to any cookbook collection!

After a very brief Introduction, and a 2-page Pantry spread, the book kicks right into gear. It is divided into Seasons, with a special Holiday section to close out the book. The recipes are straightforward and use basic, healthy ingredients, and include a brief tip to assure individuality and success. The pictures are bright and clear, keeping the food the main focus.

All in all, this will be a cookbook to keep and use often; it would also make a great gift!

I have always loved the idea of five ingredients in five minutes. These take a little longer and don't count spices as ingredients so the title is a little misleading. There are some very tasty ideas here (no macaroni or velveeta need apply). More meat than I usually eat, but great for a last minute meal when I'm pooped. I greatly appreciated his pantry chapter which lets you know what you need to keep on hand. Arranged by season, Mr Symon makes it easy to find recipes with ingredients I just got at the Farmer's Market.

  • Candice

I had the pleasure of meeting Chef Michael Symon a few years ago and he is one of the nicest, most down to earth people I've met. When I had the opportunity to get his latest cookbook and review it, I jumped at the chance.

This book is divided into sections by the seasons. Chef Symon's reasoning behind this is so that we will use the freshest of the produce available in each season and by doing so the flavors of our meals will be enhanced exponentially.

Good recipes for each season that are rustic and eclectic! Not all the recipes were easy, and some had more than 5 ingredients, but the couple of dishes I tried were delicious. Some of the recipes were better for entertaining too. There's a very good selection of different types of dishes with emphasis on different cultures or regions. Overall, a pretty good gift idea for anyone who likes cooking something a little extraordinary.
