Adrift and Alone: True Stories of Survival at Sea Reviews
-
Picked up for 'graphic non-fiction' month in Children's Books group. Boy oh boy I am not the target audience. Way too superficial for me. Nothing educational about it, either. I'd rate it one star because that's the indicator of how strongly I'd recommend that a library purchase it, but maybe I'm wrong and it does have value for some kids.

I thought that adrift and alone was a very thrilling story and to think, I could have been in one of those situations. If something like that happened to me I probable would break down and cry. It was a very cool plural story. Some people died and got very sick, even a family was lost at sea. There was lots of drama and shark attacks! What really made me mad was that most people after being attacked they go right back to the same spot! Like aren't they afraid of being attacked again? Man I love sharks!

4stars as a kids/YA book -3 stars for adult tastes. I actually didn’t realize it was a YA/middle school book until I was almost done it.

This one features seven brief graphic anecdotes about survival at sea that will whet your appetite (pun intended) to read their complete sagas. I remember being obsessed with Stephen Callahan’s story back in the 80s but Poon Lim’s story was new to me. I’m definitely going to pick up Sole Survivor.
I love this genre-great to revisit on occasion especially in graphic memoir form. It reminds me of the need to get back soon to Sherman’s bookstore in Maine to scour their fabulous sailing/lost-at-sea section. -
A short graphic book relating the high (low) points of several incidents when people have found themselves "adrift and alone" (except in one instance) at sea. These were the lucky ones that survived to tell their stories. Admittedly, there are far more detailed books available that provide the information that many people would like read about. This book can be read in 15 - 20 minutes while others are true books. If the brief stories herein peek your interest, it is suggested that you search out the detailed accountings provided in books written by the actual survivors.

I got a stack of these Graphic Library books for the kids from our local library and figured I would read a couple of them. The stories are interesting and well drawn. Some stories might prompt readers to do more research. The story of Captain Phillips and his capture by Somali pirates was recorded in this book. Pretty interesting overall!

1. Loved this little book. I'm a sucker for survival stories.
2. The first thing I thought of when reading about Jose Salvador Alvarenga is that he ate the other guy Ezekiel Cordova because of how healthy he looked. I looked up more information on him and apparently Ezekiel's family thought the same thing.
3. For more information:
-Read The Stars My Destination for Poon Lim
-Dougal Robertson's book Sea Survival: A Manual
-Steven Callahan wrote, Adrift: 76 Days Lost At Sea. The director of Life of Pi also consulted Steven for the movie
-The book Nights of Ice has Alaskan survival stories including Bob Kidd's story.
-The book A Captain's Duty is a book by Richard Phillips. His story is also a movie called Captain Phillips starring Tom Hanks.
-Jose Salvador Alvarenga had a book written about him called 438 Days: An Extraordinary True Story of Survival at Sea
4. I like to read these things to glean skills just in case. Ideas like catching water, using whatever you have to your advantage, staying positive and strong.
5. I just can't get Wilson from Castaway out of my head after reading this. -
Fascinating stories of survival and adventure written in a graphic novel format.
