Creatures of the Abyss (Unsolved Mysteries) Reviews

This was a highly informative, older elementary age book on mysterious ocean creatures. Many of the creatures were factual, though there was a section on lake and ocean monsters.
Many of the creatures were familiar to me, like the archelon, oar fish and sperm whale. Of all the creatures discussed, both factual and mysterious, only one was unfamiliar to me, Chessie. Chessie is a monster that resides in Chesapeake Bay. It is thought to be a snakelie monster, unlike the plesiosaur form of Nessie.
The photos, art maps and quotes all really enhanced the text and helped explain concepts. One photo was really amazing. It was the head and neck of a sperm whale, with it's mouth slightly open, and a diver swimming along side. The scale of just that part of the whale to the diver was amazing. The diver looked so small.
This was a text heavy book making it good for older elementary school research. It has a glossary and index as well. A very engaging, interesting book. -
My students have long loved this series, and I finally got around to reading one while teaching about Scotland. I love how the author draws together truth and legend, and sometimes how a legend is the truth not yet uncovered. She writes about the mysterious and the things that may actually be possible in the depths of our oceans and lakes. She includes ancient texts with occurrences once considered impossible and then shows modern-day discoveries proving these creatures true. Jules Verne and Herman Melville are included in the book for writing about the Kraken and monstrous whales long before the actual creatures were discovered. I love the spirit of mystery and adventure for young minds, encouraging them not to be too quick to dismiss "mythical" creatures under the sea. I hope this series will continue to spur curious minds and dreamers on. I'm surprised and delighted and will read more in this series. Fascinating!
