When a wealthy Wall Street commodity futures trader is found dead in his townhouse of an apparent drug overdose, Deputy Coroner Michael Antonetti, NYPD, is suspicious. Antonetti tells Detective Louis Martelli he suspects what appears to be a suicide may in fact be murder. After a similar case is discovered involving a former friend of the Wall Street trader who played on the same high school football team almost twenty years earlier, Martelli is convinced he is dealing with someone bent on revenge. But the two teammates who ostensibly committed suicide were part of an elite three-man squad known as The Flying Horsemen. This convinces Martelli there will be a third victim. But who might it be, and could the killings have anything to do with the rape and suicide of some of the men's former high school classmates? The answers will be found in this mystery/thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

Night Shadows (Martelli NYPD, #4) Reviews

I picked this up from a GoodReads appeal to audibly read and review. Based on the use of profanity both F and seriously G-D, I would give this 2 stars.

The story audibly feels like a radio drama. At one point early on I found myself giggling and humming the Theme to Dragnet. The pause between the last word and new chapter is too long, every time, all 50+ chapters. Several times I checked that there wasn't a problem on my end (first 6-7 chapters).

I liked the characters and their individual relationships. Quite noticeably the author chose to write a smart group that worked together.

The story was good too. It was well-developed. I found the ending to be on target and compassionate.

Sadly, the gross use of profanity ruins what could be a good, memorable story as well as an unapologetic gift (my standard). This is book 4 of 6, and my one and only.

Mysterious figure in the dark -- who is it?

Solving these murders required overcoming seemingly virtually insurmountable obstacles. Every lead seemed to go to a dead end. There seemed to be only circumstantial evidence. The murderer left an ancient coin under the victims tongues, confusing everything but revealing the deaths were tied together. Danger increases as the ending builds and the cases are solved.

This book helps point out situations of sexual abuse, and there is factual information about the topic provided.

Another murder mysterysolved by detective Louis Martelli and Sean O'Keefe. These books by Mr. Cohen are intriguing, gripping and suspenseful. Narrator Gregg Rizzoli does an amazing job of voicing these characters.

“Night Shadows” by Theodore J. Cohen, PhD, is a murder mystery right out of NYPD case files… or so it seems. Detective-Investigator Louis Martelli and his partner, Sean O’Keeffe, found themselves with an unexpected murder on their hands, when Deputy Coroner Michael Antonetti’s assistant discovered a rare ancient coin under the tongue of the cadaver brought in as an apparent suicide.

Launched into an investigation they hadn’t anticipated, the Detectives soon found themselves investigating a related second murder, while trying to prevent a third one. Using resources available to the police IT person, the two built their case one slow piece at a time, following up on many false leads in the process.

Will they be able to solve the case before another murder is committed? Will they finally be able to follow a legitimate lead? Will the murderer be apprehended?

“Night Shadows” is a fascinating and believable story about the consequences of poor decisions. Sometimes those consequences are not realized until much later in life. Sometimes they are tragic, for all involved.

Dr. Cohen has crafted a brilliant tale demonstrating the possible results of choices made by a group of High School students, which finally come to fruition many years later. Details of the police investigation were remarkably credible, incorporating a number of high tech tools only recently available.

Dr. Cohen has perfectly captured the essence of small town America, and the passion for athletic performance that goes beyond the rational. This story was an enthralling tale I just could not put down.

This is one murder mystery I will assuredly recommend to anyone and everyone with an interest in the genre.

I came across this book through Dr. Cohen’s website and I am glad that I did. For those interested in the social issues like Sexual Abuse and Cyber Bullying, this book is a treat. Yet another beautiful tale from the cases of Detective Louis Martelli, NYPD, Detective Sean O’Keeffe. Deputy Coroner Michael Antonetti, NYPD, is suspicious that what look suicide is actually a murder. He goes down drilling the roots and finding more similar cases, Detective Martelli has to save the third victim. The book has a wonderful flow, you pick it up and you cannot keep it down until finished followed by some amazing dialogues!! Its complex plot fascinates the reader and the book has surely got the best character portrayals, I could actually imagine them. Dr. Cohen had beautifully used a crime solving story to address a serious issue corroding our society. This is a mystery thriller, a murder mystery, I would suggest everyone!! - Kruti Mehta
