Doug Penhallam has been sacked as a journalist from a national daily for phone hacking. With his marriage in tatters and a string of failed affairs behind him, he leaves London to research a triple murder that took place in his own ancestral home during the English Civil War. Penhallam Manor, in the rugged south west of England, is owned by the mysterious Julia Masters, a self-confessed alcoholic and recluse. Doug finds that his presence in the house awakens memories of terrible past deeds, centred on the persecution of a young girl whose love for a neighbour was cruelly opposed by her father because the two families supported different sides in the war.
As Doug’s relationship with Julia develops, they become lovers and he learns the true reason for her incarceration in this isolated manor house. With her help, he discovers that events which occurred there nearly four hundred years ago are mirrored by his own son’s relationship with a Muslim girl whose father has forbidden her to marry outside of their faith. When his son’s girlfriend is abducted and forced to appear before a sham Sharia court for offending Islamic moral values, the memories in the house take on a more tangible form which propel Doug and Julia into a dramatic chase to rescue them both from a brutal punishment.

The Voice Within is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

It's hard to categorise and that's partly what makes it so great in this era of tightly packaged, predictable genre fiction. I loved that there was a mixture of paranormal events, a thriller-ish feel, intriguing love stories and contemporary societal themes threaded throughout the narrative. It's a really unique novel.

The main character of Douglas is tangibly real. At first, I found him frustrating and slightly unpleasant, prone to angry outbursts, but as the story evolved, so did he, and the reader realises that he's a very complex character with a good heart who's makes mistakes like the rest of us.

I loved how the past linked with events in the present to teach the characters important life lessons. Overall, this book is very hard to put down and entertains from start to end, with a wonderfully satisfying conclusion. I really look forward to reading the author's other books.

I really enjoyed The Voice Within. I thought the book was very well written and I couldn't put it down because I wanted to know what was going to happen next!! I also loved how some of the chapters suddenly brought you back in time so you could meet and understand the characters of the past more. This book is a must read!
