Who Wants to Buy a Book of Poems? Reviews

Curiosity level: wowsers!
•
This quirky title would probably draw out your innate curious cat. It's a book of poems bursting with witty lines and mischievous singlish expressions that would make even the dourest reader giggle.
•
In the poem "Cognition gap", the poet addresses the paradoxical issues Singaporeans encounter in candid style. “They say we’re competitive at heart when at heart we’re very stressed, We are politically passive and they think we are oppressed”. He suggests that Singapore may not be as “perfect” a country as we all think it is.
•
In "Journey of the Magi", Gwee Li Sui rewrites the biblical tale of the three wise men with a Singaporean twist! Think Orchard road!
•
"Spiritus Loci" questions (in epigrammatic fashion) the meaning behind well-known street names in Singapore.
•
I enjoyed (and giggled) reading every poem in the book. Singaporeans will be able to relate to these topics and have true LOL moments.
•
For those who aren't fans of poetry, be not dismayed! Gwee Li Sui’s refreshing satirical portrayal of sensitive local issues will make you unconsciously turn page after page with curiosity and wonder.
•
Perhaps the poet wants us to take ourselves a little less seriously so that we'll be able to see things about our beloved country in a newer light :) -
