Ellis Portal, former judge and once living among the homeless in Toronto, has made a promise to Queenie, his dying wife: Find who murdered The Juicer.
And so begins Portal’s quest which brings him back to the world of homelessness along with its secrets and fears. Through Portal’s memories, Aubert brings to life the everyday realities of being homeless.
“I remembered the preparations we used to make on the street and in the valley for the coming winter. I had now lived in a proper apartment long enough to have forgotten a lot of the scrambling for cardboard and plastic and discarded cloth that had filled our October and early November days.”
Ellis Portal’s dignity and moral depth makes him a lovable character. One you can trust as does Kezia, a young adolescent who brings to the story the dimension of living in fear and being bullied by her gang member brothers.
Aubert is not afraid to tackle hot social issues: police brutality, homelessness and gangs.
The writing is impeccable. Not surprising from an author who’s published three poetry books..
Don't Forget You Love Me is a well told story of justice and a reminder that class has nothing to do with love and grief. -
154. Don't Forget You Love Me by Rosemary Aubert
Ellis Portal is back, widowed, grieving, semi-retired and almost at loose ends. However, on her deathbed, Queenie has asked him to find the murderer of one of her clients, and Ellis starts to do so, but keeps coming up with dead ends and a distinct lack of co-operation of his formerly friendly police contacts, who may have been involved in the death. He is also approached by a female reporter who has written about him in the past, and who wants his help with an intelligent creative young black girl, Kezia, whose brothers are gang members. Ellis is working with his son Jeff who is managing the facility for the homeless in the valley, and there is tension when Ellis finds out that Jeff is taking donations that may compromise their independence. With his new romantic interest, I’m hoping we’ll see Ellis again. -
