Finding Mr. Write (CANDID Romance, #1) Reviews

Oh goodness, I just loved this book! I love it when I read a new author and immediately feel pulled right into the story. That's what happened with just the first paragaph of Finding Mr. Write.

Dorrie Miller is a young woman who has never felt good enough; not to her father or mother, men she's dated. She wants more than anything in the world to be a published novelist, writing Christian fiction. There's going to be a Christian conference for authors and Dorrie is going. Her all time favorite author, the reclusive Mya Elizabeth Linscott, is rumored to be there and Dorrie is determined to get signed copies of her books. Plans are made to catch this author in person by Dorrie and her friends.

Jeremiah Jacobs moved to just start over. He hasn't any friends in the new city he's moved to, nor does he have plans to get romantically involved with anyone. Ever again. Period. Jeremiah is a writer and intends going to the same conference as Dorrie, but a physical ailment at the last minute prevents him from flying, so he tries to find someone to carpool with.

Dorrie is the only one he can ride with. Jeremiah is a super handsome man and Dorrie hopes she can keep from making a fool of herself on the drive there and back. Eight hours!

Then Dorrie finds herself accidentally married to Jeremiah. What in the world just happened? Will Dorrie trust God that His plans for her to have a future and prosper could mean something as harebrained as a pretend marriage? Stranger things have happened. But there are so many doubts and insecurities and secrets between Dorrie and Jeremiah. To find that out, you must get the book.

This debut novel from Carol Moncado is like a breath of fresh air. She has crafted characters that feel real from the moment the reader first sees their name on a page. The writing is never forced, there is not just filler in this book. Every word counts and means somethng to someone.

Carol Moncado has, I think, what it takes to be a wonderful addition to the Christian fiction world. She is now on my list of favorite authors, one whose work I will eagerly look forward to.

There are spiritual lessons to be learned here, plus a wonderful and precious romance. I just loved this book! It *felt good*. There are not many times you pick up a book and it just grabs you from the very first. It made me happy to read Finding Mr. Write. I've learned she has 5 more books due before the end of the year! I think I have just found my Christmas present.

If you read this book, you will not be disappointed. I promise.

*I was provided an advanced reader copy of this book by the author in exchange for my honest review, which I have given.*

Carol Moncado turns the marriage of convenience theme on its ear when handsome, mysterious Jeremiah and spunky longing-to-be-published writer Dorrie find themselves in a marriage of inconvenience. Thrown together first by a love of writing and then by a photo shoot gone wrong, Moncado's hero and heroine build and challenge their budding relationship through events that had me laughing, nodding my head, and turning the pages as quick as I could. As much of a homage to the Christian writing world as it is a romance, readers will appreciate this view into the struggles of those who long to be published and want to be loved.

Absolute lovely read. A book that grabs your interest from page one. Christian, humorous romance. This was my first read of this author and diffently will not be the last. This marriage of convenience/inconvenience between the hero and heroine is used by the author to bring in Bibical marriage, but in a humorous way. I was given this book for an honest review.y

Great story! One thing that I loved most about this story was that it was so very different from any story I have ever read. As an avid reader, I often find myself wondering, once I've stared a book, if I have already read it before. That was certainly not the case with this one. I look forward to more from this author! :)

  • Meredith

Appreciate the author taking on the question of building a loving relationship with an arranged marriage. However I found the ploy to have the couple in an arranged marriage fairly unrealistic.

    Write out of Serenity Landing

Dottie Miller could not believe her eyes at the Prince Caspian look a like that walked into the local CANDID meeting. Nor would she believe his story would become hers. Jeremiah Jacobs was struck by Caribbean blue of the girl's eyes. He'd fallen in love before and what did it get him; nothing but heartache. But he couldn't get those eyes and that girl out of his head.

This was the first book I’ve read for pleasure in the past 3 years and this was a great one to start with! Everything flowed pretty well and was very easy to read.

This was a well written and entertaining Christian romance novel. Most of it takes place at the CANDID,
Christian Authors Network – Dedicated to Inspirational Distinction, conference. I enjoyed this fun story a lot, and I loved the characters. There was a strong emphasis on faith that I liked. Also, there was a plot point in the story that was rather amusing from the reader's perspective but that caused a major obstacle between the protagonists due to one of them feeling fooled and betrayed. I had assumed that this book would merely be a light and fun read and was glad at how much I was mistaken. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Finding Mr. Write is the first book I have read by author, Carol Moncado. It is definitely a unique story setting about two writers; one an aspiring author, and the other a successful, but secretive author. I figured out very quickly that Jeremiah was the elusive MEL that Dorrie and her friends were 'stalking.' This made for very amusing and awkward moments in the story. The plot about Dorrie and Jeremiah's fake marriage, suddenly becoming a real marriage, was a bit unbelievable for me. I understand how this marriage scenario tied into Dorrie's writing style for her books, and how unexpected it was for her to be living one of her own story plots, but I personally found the marriage plot a bit shallow, not matching the depth her characters portrayed. Dorrie is sensible and responsible. She doesn't seem like the like of girl to give into a foolish situation. Perhaps this was the author's intention to show us how God can help us work out our mistakes, but it seemed out of character for Dorrie. I did like the faith element and the desire to work through difficult emotional situations. I especially enjoyed Jeremiah's noble character; humanly weak at moments and faithfully strong in moments that mattered. The story carries enough humor to keep it from being too weighed down by the drama affecting the main characters. This wasn't a "WOW" read for me, but certainly a good one and I'll definitely read future books by Ms. Moncado.

I almost gave this book 2 stars then decided upon 3 stars by the time I finished it. Unfortunately, there were many typographical and grammatical errors in the kindle version. Many times throughout the story I was confused as to which character was speaking or thinking.

This was a contemporary story about a marriage of convenience. At first I thought it a bit silly that two intelligent people could find themselves "accidentally married" but I kept reading anyway because there was a strong attraction between Jeremiah and Dorrie. I was curious to see how the two authors would make their marriage work.

Dorrie had always felt unloved and unwanted by her parents, especially her father, so she had trust issues. Jeremiah had been married before to a wife who had cheated on him. Although he'd vowed never to marry again he took his vows seriously once he found himself wed to Dorrie. He tried very hard to make their relationship work, giving Dorrie space to accept the situation. The secret he kept from her was obvious from the start, and it threatened to distance Dorrie from him once she found out, but his love and support for her won in the end.

There were no detailed sex scenes in this novel. Intimacy was behind closed doors between newly weds. Overall I found this book a pleasant read.

This will be a review for both Finding Mr. Write and Finally Mr. Write, by Carol Moncado because Good Reads has connected the two books for some reason.

Finding Mr. Write: (4 STARS) A cute, sassy read. Having found this author by accident or divine appointment, whichever you are most comfortable using, I find Moncado's work light, witty, and full of a positive spiritual message and Godly relationships, which is, after all, the main point in writing Christian fiction. My criticism only comes in the form of editorial issues - sentence splicing, punctuational errors, POV confusion, and tense usage. A few more editorial sweeps would have fixed the vast majority. Overall, this was a clever, funny, quick read.

Finally Mr. Write: (3 STARS) This was umm... okay. It did not hold the cleverness nor the sassiness I have come to expect from a Moncado work. Though the blatant editorial mistakes were far fewer, there were several grammatical errors that made me cringe. These characters are writers, or at least most are, which is why I cannot excuse a few of the issues. I do, however, love this author and how her separate series have moments when they overlap yet are completely independent, and am looking forward to her becoming more refined as a storyteller.

    Disappointing and painfully contrived

This is my first book by this author. I don't know if I'm up for trying any of her others. The premise is promising, the book starts out well, Dorrie seems like a good heroine and Jeremiah is an excellent hero pretty much from beginning to end, minus a few slips in situations that were pretty darned understandable.

    SPOILERS AHEAD
The fake marriage is painfully and cringeworthily contrived. Jeremiah is at least trying his best to make things work, but Dorrie has become an emotional drama case.

By the time she learns what most readers will have figured out pretty early on in the story, she becomes a full fledged sulky brat because Jeremiah has been a man of honor by being a man of his word - therefore she can't trust him? What? How can any Christian woman be oblivious to the fact that being a man of honor MEANS HE IS TRUSTWORTHY.
I can't understand why we're supposed to believe that Jeremiah loves her when I as a reader can't even like her.

And all of this is BEFORE we even get to the ridiculousness of the idea that God would hold people to vows that they are only pretending to make. Words are not like magic spells - our intentions actually do matter.

This was a very fun and entertaining read. I was hooked right from the beginning and didn't want to put it down. The premise that two strangers end up accidently married to each other was entertaining. As they try to build a relationship with each other there was still one secret that Jeremiah wasn't able to share. This caused some moments of tension, even though it explained to Dorrie why he couldn't reveal the secret yet. I loved how Jeremiah showed Dorrie that he was there for her but also gave her space when she needed it. My favourite part was when he stood up for her and she finally realized she loved him. The insight into the life of a new writer trying to get published was interesting. Never really thought about how that all works. This was a new author for me and I would read more of her books.
