Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins Reviews
-
This is a beginner book, one of the first books you might choose to read to a child. I see Pete the Cat is beloved, but I don't know that history and we haven't read him.
I admit I thought the artwork was eeh and the story was bland. I was going to give 1 star and my nephew thought it was ok. He liked the pumpkins so he gave it 3 stars. So, I gave it 2. This is safe enough my niece could read accept that she calls this a baby book and wouldn't read it with us even though it takes a minute to read.
I think I'm too old for Pete the Cat. -
Nothing wrong with the book per se, it just hits one of my pet peeves - using branded/trademarked characters just for the sake of selling books instead of having anything to do with the plot.
Five Little Pumpkins is a basic Halloween rhyme, and the text is reproduced here. Pete the Cat appears in the illustrations, but is never mentioned in the rhyme itself. His presence is only there so there could be a new "Pete the Cat" book without having to come up with a new plot. -
Using the song Five Little Pumpkins as his text, artist James Dean creates a fun Pete the Cat Halloween book, as everybody's favorite cool cat character interacts with the eponymous pumpkins...
One of a number of these Pete the Cat song books - others include
Pete the Cat: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and
Pete the Cat: The Wheels on the Bus - Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins combines a fun read-aloud text with bright and colorful artwork. Fans of Pete the Cat will enjoy this introduction to a popular Halloween song. -

This is a fun Pete the Cat book! Kids will love to sing along to this, and grooving along with Pete! The illustrations will have kids smiling a mile wide, and then some. The Pete the Cat books are a fun mix of songs and writing. You can’t go wrong with a Pete the Cat book!

Featured in grandma reads session.
Who doesn't love Pete-the-Cat?? My guys are all fans, and they love Halloween as well, so this was a given, and today was a perfect day to read it.
Five little pumpkins, sitting on a fence. . . .or gate or whatever works. . .super short and fast, but fun to acknowledge the season has begun.
3 stars, all tripping down memory lane! -
It's great to have a title featuring jack-o-lanterns before any scary looking pumpkins make their appearance. And who better to introduce the holiday than a trusted friend? My son Luke loves Pete the Cat -- he actually calls him Pita Cat, which I hope he does forever because it's freaking adorable. And one of my favorite things about this franchise is its songbook collection because it has helped me introduce key nursery rhymes and songs to Luke, in particular, that are critical to the social childhood experience.
"Five Little Pumpkins" is sure to come up in most preschool classrooms since it's a seasonal pick that is also perfect for introducing the words for the first five ordinals: First, second, third, fourth, and fifth. This isn't something I'd necessarily expect Luke to pick up yet, but he does understand "first/then"-based behavioral strategies, so we'll see. My son Harry's ready, so what I'm trying is holding up one finger for first, two for second, etc., with the hope that he can make the connection with this visual cue.
A final tip for those who are not screen averse: If your child loves watching videos but doesn't love reading as much, consider introducing short animated movies of books, including "Five Little Pumpkins." People often have strong feelings about screens, but media tie-ins can be a great way to nurture a child's interest in physical books.

I review books for children from the perspective of a parent of kids with autism. The review above is part of a longer blog post about this book and four other books perfect for the Halloween season:

Fans of the Pete the Cat series will love this take on the traditional Five Little Pumpkins. It is told with Pete the Cat on each page along with the five pumpkins. The illustrations are very colorful and children will enjoy the facial expressions of the pumpkins on each page.

My son came home from Kindergarten absolutely in love with this song. Then to find out it's a picture book! We read it each night. He has is memorized so he loves to feel that he's actually "reading" it. Pete the Cat is an added bonus to a perfect Halloween themed book.

This is essentially the old Five Little Pumpkin rhyme but higher interest because it is Pete the Cat.

A super quick read about Pete the Cat and 5 Little Pumpkins.

This book is about everyone's favorite little cat; Pete or more specifically Pete the Cat. In this adventure we join Pete as he comes along 5 little pumpkins. Why five little pumpkins you ask, well because it is Halloween. Everyone can get excited about Halloween, especially the young ghouls and ghosts that this book is marketed to. This book takes an interesting twist on the "Five Little Pumpkins" song and also gives some very interesting visuals to go with the story.
I personally liked this book a lot when thinking about younger grade levels. It would be nice for PreK to introduce the topic of Halloween. It will help them become familiar with the holiday and things they may see around that time. The same can be said for Kindergartners, it allows them to make a text-to-self relationship because they have experienced the holiday perhaps. It also allows them to name some things they saw in the book that they may see around this time: witches, pumpkins, and other types of monsters. It also helps them with counting. Kids this age are just really learning to count. This book allows them to start off with some small numbers, numerically listed, that they have most likely learned at this point in the school year. The pumpkins in the book are also wearing different costumes and this helps us identify each one, this can also help them count them.
Personally, I think this opens up multiple teaching opportunities and connected lesson plans for the month of October. Even though not everyone celebrates Halloween, it can still have different connections to the month of October and help with counting or lessons connected to that. -
I'm not a fan of the Pete the Cat books written by James Dean, but this one I can tolerate. It uses the original song and adds Pete the Cat to the illustrations. Kids like it, so I use it for story times along with the hand motions.

Awards the book has received (if any): New York Time Bestseller
Appropriate grade level(s): pre- k - 2nd
Original 3-line summary: The lovable Pete (from the Pete the cat series), sings the classic song of Five Little Monkeys jumping on the bed. However it has a Halloween twist for something spooky!
Original 3-line review: I think this book is super cute and a different way to get kids to re-read a book just with a different topic and character. I've never read the Pete the cat series personally, but looking at them they look like a good series with a lot of different options.
2-3 possible in-class uses: The same as five little monkeys, you teach children repetition and repeating and learning their basic numbers. -
Pete the Cat is one of my favorites. This book was cute, but I felt it was missing something that is special to Pete the Cat. It had a feeling of being one of those dime a dozen holiday books.
On that note, I did do the audio book/print book combo off of Overdrive and loved that with the narration, it combined it with highlighting the words, as well as teaching young readers how to listen to audio books. -
At our house, we love Pete the Cat. This, his Halloween themed book, is simple and cute, but not as fun as some of his other adventures. The illustrations were the best part in this particular story. And I loved Pete's Halloween costume. Good for younger readers who just need something quick and easy to enjoy, that isn't scary.

The girls and I love Pete; so any book, starring him, is going to be rated thumbs up!
I do wish there was more interplay between Pete and the pumpkins! Pete just seems to be an afterthought! He, being Pete, should be the star of the story!
But that be as it may, this book, is definitely going to be a Halloween favorite! -
Pete the cat is celebrating Halloween counting pumpkins in a musical fashion in this children's picture book. preschool age children are entertained singing with Pete the cat!
-
Pete the Cat is always fun.
