Samhain. All Hallows' Eve. The most mystical night of the year. The time when the veil between the worlds became perilously thin. And with a full moon overhead, this awesome power reaches its climactic height.

Sorcha had no time for mystical nonsense - there were enough challenges in navigating the mine-field of her mother's vicious temper and the most important event of her young life. For, at long last, she had left Edinburgh to see the world. She and her mother were visiting the elegant city of Bath. Sorcha was wearing the finest dress she'd seen - and she was stepping into a life she'd only dreamt of.

But when Johnny's eyes meet hers, and jealous rivals vow revenge, that delicate layer between what is and what once was rips. It shreds like the fragile thread of one's life.

One Scottish Lass is the first novella in the regency time travel romance trilogy. It is 116 pages / 18,000 words. The second novella in the series is A Time Apart. The first two novellas end in cliffhangers, while the third provides a happy ending. The series then will continue in another trilogy - those will be coming out over the coming weeks. These stories are teen-friendly with no explicit language, violence, or intimacy. All proceeds benefit battered women's shelters. Note that for those who prefer reading books in all-in-one form, each trio of novellas will also be compiled as a completed box set once all three are done. It just means you have to be patient and wait for me to finish writing all of them :). For those who prefer to read along as I write, and offer suggestions for me to shape the plot, these novellas are here for your enjoyment! Either way, I'd love to hear your feedback on the storyline and characters.

One Scottish Lass Reviews

Finished for Halloween reading challenge. Mentions Samhain for bonus points. Must be read in conjunction with A Time Apart and A Circle in Time. All three books one star.

  • Jenny

    Cliffhanger. 😡

  • Nicole

The first of three. Groan. And very short. It is more like the first couple of chapters of a book. Why can’t Indy authors just write a book?
I would have liked more of the story before rating it. This rates 2 stars because it is incomplete, although with a little more, it would have rated at least three stars.
It did need better editing, but I love that proceeds from these books aid battered women.

The author has a beautiful writing style, but unfortunately, this story just isn't for me. I started skimming after the fourth chapter when there still hadn't been any time travel. I had to skip ahead to the second novella to find out that this story is actually about an alternate universe, which is not the same as time travel. If you do plan to read this, I suggest you have all three novellas in hand so that you can read them as one book.

  • Lori

    Horrible Mother

Sorcha has sure a horrible mother. They arrive at a birthday party and there she meets Jonathan but there is treachery around.

  • Seven Steps

Excellent book with a surprise twist

Excellent book with a surprise ending. Guess I'll have to read a time apart to see how things turn out. Another great read by Lisa Shea.

  • Reba

I like the book and the characters are compelling, however there is a mistake in chapter nine where Julia and Sorcha's names are switched.
I am sad it was so short and that it is a series.
A novel would have sufficed compared to three mini novellas.

Novella? I don't think so. More like a chapter or two. How can I even get interested in characters without any development to tease me? What I see is an evil mom, an evil witch, an evil cousin, a darling do-no-wrong heroine, a knight in shining armor love interest, and a few secondary characters that aren't explored. I tend to dislike books with extreme characters because developing those characters is hard to do. Most writers fail to make them seem relatable or remotely human. No one is 100% good or 100% bad and I have trouble dealing with books centered around characters like that. I'd read a fairy tale or morality play if I liked that sort of thing. Thank you to the writer for putting this out there for free, but it is definitely mislabeled as a novella, which my rating reflects. It is misleading and would have been better offered as a sample of a full book. It is my personal taste that it didn't appeal. I am sure many others would be interested in this type of story.

Overview: Sorcha is a young girl mistreated by her attention-seeking mother. Dragged to a party, she seeks refuge in the kitchen where she meets a man named Johnny who just rescued a box of kittens. Discovers a murder plot and is sent into another dimension.

Opinion: It has potential, but seems unfinished. I would say it is only a third of the way completed, as Sorcha is just starting her time-travel, let alone being able to fall in love and warn Johnny of the murder plot against him. I understand it is a novella and part of a series but I would rather have the whole story in one book than end it how it did. There is not enough given in this one to keep me interested, especially if knowing the second book is probably going to end the same way.

    Recommend: No

Sorcha and Jonny meet and share a great conversation and share an attraction. Sorcha is interested, but her mother wants Sorcha to be a spinster and take care of her forever. There are others interested in keeping the pair apart. Some have their eye on the throne, others the prince.

This book was interesting and right when you were sucked in. Cliffhanger ending. It was a good book, but the characters, while interested, did not really get to know each other. I did feel empathy for Sorcha and her home life, and even though she went through what she did, she really looked at things optimistically, which i admire. 3 stars

I'm sad. I thought this was a complete story, but it is the first installment of a serial story line.
Disappointment aside, this was a good read. Good character development, intrigue, and setting.
Will I read on? I'm not big on serial novels. I like the whole meal, not the sample platter.
I might just wait until its publishes as a full novel.

Great start and worth checking out if you don't mind reading in short bursts.

Never would I read anytime so

Please you will be in for a rude awakening this is one of the worst books I have ever read. I have read hundreds of books in this era and I have never given a bad review as this book. I would not ever read anything you write again for fear of wasting my money. Wow 's. Ms. D from New York City P.s. Read some of Donna Grant book to learn how to keep your reader reading books she knows

I enjoyed this short story very much! i think this author writes well and the story line is very consistent. I am really looking forward to the other 2 books to find out what happens. I sure hope her mom gets whats coming to her... she is really nasty! Time Travel is one of my favorite Genres and this lady does a good one.

  • Becky

I would hardly call this a novella -- it was more like the first chapter of a book and I don't think it should have been standalone. The characters are only templates at this point and there's not enough development or plot for me to even be intrigued yet. If it was only the first chapter, I would definitely keep reading, but I don't know if I can be bothered to search out the next "novella".

    What just happened?

Very short. I became invested in the plot, and then... cliffhanger.

The Worst part is the dialog between Julia and Felton. It seemed so scripted and forced. The rest was natural, the emotion wrapped me in, the sweet potential of love starting to bloom....

BAM! The end, and you're welcome.

  • Aleida Vale

I really loved this novella. It was so easy to get lost in. The story was very enjoyable. I got all three before starting to read because I knew they flowed into each other and I didn't want to have to wait in between.

  • Tabby Shiflett

    3.5 Stars
    A serial romance.
    Proceeds to a women's shelter.

  • C Joy

This was a promising start to a new series and I like how everything was set. The author forewarned of a cliffhanger so it's really exciting to read the next in line.

  • Lisa

It was short. I thought it was going to be a complete story. But it was still good. I hope she is okay since she got pushed into a well.

  • Karen Darling

    Too boring, couldn't finish.

  • Carrie Garza

    Another short story
Too short really to get my attention.

  • Jane

One Scottish Lass starts a story with wonderful character development, sets a romantic plot with an element of evil and then ends on a cliff hanger, which I found very disappointing.

  • Becky S.

I would have rated this the highest, but did not like the way the story ended.
