If you want to see an illustration of 'I have nothing to declare but my genius' you won't find it in this book. If you can recall Wilde's witty comment that has something to do with 'gutters' and 'looking at the stars' you won't find it here. Instead. Drew has painstakingly scouted the world for Wilde's less well-known quotable words of wisdom and humorously illustrated them. Drew's own inimitable drawings will sometimes clarify (or more likely confuse) the meanings of Wilde's quips - but always entertain.
If you want a book to give you guidance, and to supply you with a philosophy to live your life by, this isn't the book for you. If you want a good laugh and the ability to pass Wilde's most obscure remarks off as your own, buy buy this book. Buy it now.
the quotations of Oscar Wilde the drawings of Simon Drew Reviews
-
The quotations of Oscar Wilde and the drawings of Simon Drew, one can't do better than that. And here they are, put together by the illustrator, but not those all too well-known quotations for which Wilde is famous, or even infamous, but some of his less repeated quotations that are accompanied by suitable humorous illustrations of cats, and occasionally dogs, by Simon Drew.
The cover illustration and accompanying epigram set the tone of the volume for Wilde says, 'When people agree with me I always feel that I must be wrong.' And the front end papers continue with 'Always forgive your enemies: nothing annoys them so much.' And never short of some witty bons mots, Wilde continues in similar vein with such as 'It is always a silly thing to give advice, but to give good advice is fatal.'
Never over-careful with money Wilde's comment on it sums him up as he says, 'I don't want money, It's only people who pay their bills who want money.' And his relationship with women is well known and of the female sex he says, 'Women love men for their defects [his wife Constance was forebearing in this respect]; if men have enough of them women will forgive them everything.'
And not known for his physical fitness, Wilde says, with a lovely cat relaxing and looking on from a pillow, 'To win back my youth, there is nothing I wouldn't do - except to take exercise, get up early or be a useful member of the community.' Another studious cat looks over the top of a copy of 'Scoop' as Wilde says, 'The Book of Life begins with a man and a woman in a garden. It ends with Revelations'!
There are plenty more epigrams to enjoy and all the witticisms are accompanied by one of Simon Drew's magnificent illustrations of either cats, the majority, or dogs and the book makes for excellent reading and viewing ... over and over again! -
Bought for a friend but had to read. There's cats in it. They get 5 stars on their own.

Superb little book with some truly great quotations and great, inventive drawings to go with them.
Two (2) of my favorites:
“I like men who have a future and women who have a past.”
“Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.”
Sure wished I had met Oscar Wilde when he was alive. He has a sharp acerbic wit and a knack for saying just the right thing. -
charming

This short compilation of Oscar Wilde quotations is filled with wise, witty and sarcastic observations paired with pen and ink artwork by Simon Drew.
The artwork is detailed and often depicts animals, mostly cats and dogs, which transpire aspects of human behaviour, some of which even wear clothes, gaining a kitsch flair. Wilde’s quotes are handwritten and integrated with the artwork and would make very witty and interesting prints to hang.
A lovely little book for lovers of Oscar Wilde’s work, quotations, animals and Irish humor. -
Absolutely marvellous! The style of Simon Drew combined with the witty and sassy Oscar Wilde is a perfect combination! This little book is a delight for the eyes and soul.
