Bold Riley, still reeling from a tragic loss, continues southward with no real destination or purpose. On the desolate Broken Head Moors, she's rescued from a terrible storm by an aged weaver whose fantastic tapestries may foretell the shape of what's to come. (Near Mint)

The Legend of Bold Riley #2 Reviews

Just like the previous edition of "Bold Riley," I found this work to be underwhelming. The artist and art style changed for this volume, taking on a sketchier, more dream-like quality. This wasn't a bad thing, per se, and it actually made sense in the context of the "adventure" being relayed, but those expecting a consistent artistic style from work to work will likely be disappointed.

As with the previous volume, I have a few concerns. First, all the characters are rendered so broadly it is hard to really resonate with any of them. Some may prefer this form of wordless, implied storytelling, but I found myself rather disengaged. Also, while the work seems to draw inspiration from a variety of cultures and mythologies, they are combined in a seemingly haphazard way. Why give the main character the name "Princess Rilavashana SanParite," only to ever refer to her as "Bold Riley?" Why seek a variety of inspirations only to draw from what seems to be the lowest hanging fruit ?

Maybe I missed an earlier volume of this work that would tie things together for me. It certainly feels like I'm missing something as I'm reading. As it stands, though, I doubt I'll continue this series; two volumes is more than ample time for a work to hook me, and this one just didn't.

Not as fond of the art style. The wordless storytelling is intriguing, but again I feel like I am missing something crucial.

I'm giving up on this character.
