This book is a really useful guide for those who are interested to learn how to effectively close read poems.
After Secondary Two, I didn’t take Literature and so I lost touch with poetry which I realise I am actually quite interested in. I am glad I decided to pick up this book to educate myself about the analysis of poems and after reading this book, I can say that I feel confident enough to pick up poetry books and read them without the fear of not understanding them. This book has opened my eyes to the beauty of poetry that is conveyed not just through words alone, but also through the poem’s tone, persona, structure etc.
Poems are so beautiful and full of life and I can’t wait to apply the skills I have learnt in this book to reading more poetry!
P.S. I really like how this book has an entire section on Singaporean poems. You can’t really find it anywhere else!

Highly useful as a guide in reading and studying poetry be it as an individual or as an educator. The section on defining what Poetry is truly resonated and struck a chord within me. The suggested activities also seem worth an attempt for use in the classroom setting, some of which I will be attempting to implement in the upcoming semester. A fruitful read.
