Six months after he returns from his fictional world of Andvell, Jeff Powell is still plagued by nightmares, and an inability to write anything new. Cursed with permanent writer’s block, and on the verge of losing the woman of his dreams, he feels his life can’t get any more complicated. Until he comes home to find Jayden and Brady in his apartment with news that the evil sorcerer Raul is in Montreal.

In their search for the now-powerless villain, they find themselves cast back into Andvell, tasked by the Sisters with finding Raul before he regains his power and destroys the world.

As far as Jeff is concerned, he has greater issues. Cassie has a new admirer, his characters are keeping secrets, and he has become the target of a silent assassin. Without his creativity, Jeff doesn’t know if he’s up to the challenge. If he wants to save his world from ruin, he needs to prove he has more to offer than his imagination.

Eventide (Meratis Trilogy #2) Reviews

The second instalment of this portal fantasy was not quite as much fun as the first book in the series. I think the novelty of an author being sucked into their own fantasy story premise had worn off a bit and the characters and story we were left with was just not quite enough to keep me fully engaged.

I might or might not read the final instalment of the series but it if I do it will definitely not be my next read.

    Rating: 3 stars.

Audio Note: Gary Tiedemann did an OK job with the audio. Though why Venn sounded 90 years old when she was only 17 is a real puzzle to me!

    Another great read!

Jeff is back at his appartement, plagued by nightmares, and unable to write. He's keeping Cassie at a distance, unable to tell her what he traded to the Sisters for her to return.

Then Jayden and Brady appear in his home and they want him to come with them. It is a start of another adventure, but one Jeff couldn't foresee, because this time, in his real life the book is finished, but that does not mean life is on hold in Andvell...

The story was tighter, more action driven, and did a bit better on establishing the character relationships. Interest was easier to maintain since it hit its stride fairly early, but then it had that whole portion with people alternating between moping and not sharing info, which put me to sleep a few times.

It's in this book I came to realize what is keeping me from properly liking this series (so far) and it is due to the characters. First, I was never convinced on how the character relationships developed and yet by the end of book 1 Jeff was being called brother and he was calling them all friends even though the majority of the book was all the characters being hostile towards Jeff. In addition to that, I never established an emotional connection to any of the characters. Brady's presence was never very strong, Jayden was your basic hothead jerk, Jasmine was your female classic cool and collected shield maiden with very little screen time, and Jeff was too much of a douchebag for me to like even if he did a few redeeming actions. Overall, the characters were a bit flat for me, but they work with the story so I'm not overly disappointed.

Jeff spends much of this book mourning the loss of his imagination, which sometimes came through in the writing but as his ability to "see the possible in the impossible" was not really established, there was not a strong contrast and at times could be debatable. Also, it was confusing because was it imagination he lacked or creativity or was it straight up writer's block? If he had no imagination, how would he have ever thought to be suspicious? To talk to certain people because he thinks it would benefit a person/situation? I think a definition for imagination/creativity just wasn't developed enough to make for a convincing issue.

I'm giving it 2 stars this time because it's not badly written and the story is interesting, plus I liked some particular parts of the story, but I expected more, such as an expansion on Jeff being the world's creator or just a viewer. It's a basic fantasy action adventure book with the twist of having an author in his own fantasy world, so why is it not being put to use? That was my main draw to this series, too. One would think Jeff's ability to influence the world would have been better utilized...

    Meratis Book 2

I really like the characters and their development. I am impressed with Ms. Walsh's imaginative world.

Unfortunately, I did find the plots to be predictable, the writing/craft in need of improvement and the need of a proofreader all took away from the enjoyment of the novel. Also, the final 2 or 3 chapters were anticlimactic and rushed.

I will probably finish the trilogy simply because I'd love to see more of the twins and their friends and Venn.

Krista Walsh writes some really good characters. The author of book series meets with the characters from the books.Except this time the evil warlock is in Montreal,Canada. And that's just the beginning of the book. They'll end up going into his book series he created.

  • Kevin Driskill

further filling out of a great story. New twists and fun character development.

  • Rhys Boswarva

A good read. Kept me engaged, I read it rather quick. I like the main character as a character, not sure I'd like him in person though.

This second book in the Meratis trilogy is great fun and was very hard to put down! Creative story concept & wonderful execution!

Best praise I can give is that I wanted to keep reading to find out what happens next, rather than setting the book aside to do other things.

The main character has grown a bit since the first book, but he’s still whiny, and is mostly an observer, while the other characters still don’t have much depth, despite their contributions to the story. For a novel touted as taking place in Montreal, we don’t get to see much of the city, as most of the story takes place back in the fantasy world. Fortunately, the climax with the dragons was a lot of fun.

It’s been six months since author Jeff Powel returned from Andvell, the land from his bestselling series, and he’s still having nightmares. He’s also unable to write. He traded his imagination to save the woman he loves while he was there, but now he is on the verge of losing her, unable to tell her what he gave up to save her. Jeff doesn’t think things can get any more complicated until two old friends, Jayden and Brady, show up not only in his world, but in his apartment.
They aren’t the only ones from Andvell that have shown up in his world. Raul, the evil sorcerer has been living without his powers in Montreal since Jeff and Cassie came back. Cassie, Jeff, Jayden, and Brady team up to find Raul. During their search they all end up back in Andvell, where they have to once again take on Raul.

I was pleased to find I enjoyed Eventide, the second book in the Meratis Trilogy by Krista Walsh, as much, if not more than, the first book. I love the idea of an author being sucked into a world of their own creation.
The characters Krista has created are multi-faceted and rich. Watching them stumble, learn, and evolve is as interesting for me, as it seems to be for Jeff. I also love watching Jeff grow as a person, and become more than just an author. The settings and the battles in this book are also beautifully described and make me wish I could someday find myself inside of one of my stories.
This book was a welcome distraction in my busy life that I couldn’t put down. I am excited to see what Jeff and his characters are put through, and where they go, in the final book of the trilogy.

Nice easy read. It kept me well entertained. I am ready to read book 3.

Eventide is the seond book in the Meritas trilogy, and is a good continuation of the first book. We get to see more of the world of Andvell, which is a fascinating place, with some very interesting characters. Jeff, unfortunately, isn't that interesting. He spends too much of the book reacting to situations, and very much seems along for the ride. If he weren't in the book, I don't think it would make a huge difference to the plot.

The rest of the book was excellent. I really enjoyed the characters that were brought back from the first series, and a couple of very interesting new characters were added this time around. I'm sorry if I sound vague, but I don't want to spoil the plot. The ending, although a little formulatic, was satisfying, and I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in this series - or books, if this trilogy gets an expansion.

My rating is a 4 out of 5, and the only reason it doesn't get rated higher is my issues with Jeff.

I was not sure if the author was going to be able to keep with the level of the first book. Most second books tend to get a little slow. Not sure why that is. Perhaps because it is usually the bridge between and usually the bad guy is winning. Can't say that in this book. But I still am not going to give anything away.

What I will say is that the characters revealed so much more of themselves. The depth and courage shown the author gave them makes me speechless. I did not think I would become more attached to these characters but I certainly did. I did not want to put the book down and even did a 24 hour stent. The rollercoaster ride was full of twists and turns that you just did not want to get off.

I am grateful for the places I have that lets me know about book specials fore without them I would most likely not know about books such like this series and would miss out on this author's awesome talent.

You can really see this series start to take flight in this book, the world expands, new characters are added, and yeah there's a bit of sex and swearing, which makes it SO much more amazing!!! I loath books the shy away from the fbomb or sex scenes for fear of offending anyone or because someone may think it gratuitous. For the record, Krista wrote one hell of a sex scene and I would have loved MORE, but that's just me, and maybe throwing in a lot more WOULD have been gratuitous, as it was, it was perfect and I applaud her for not having away from realizing that her characters are adults and as such would do adult related things like swear and have sex.
    *sigh*
Beyond that, this book truly is amazing! I love how it builds upon the first and left me eager for the release of Book 3 (which if you haven't read, you really should)

  • A. R.<span class=

Not nearly as entertaining as the first book in this series.

I still liked the characters, both old and new. Still thought the premise of an author traveling into the world he created in his novels intriguing. But this time the magic had worn off and the second book seemed like just a lot more of the first.

There was an unnecessary sex scene, and the offensive language was gratuitous. I had a hard time believing that the characters from the world that the author created were so well versed in using the f-bomb. It was quite distracting.

Not sure I will move on to book 3. Definitely taking a break and moving on to other books.

    Overall...I was disappointed.

I always find it difficult to review the middle book of a fantasy series. The first volume is your introduction to the world and its characters, so you can't talk about that, plus you know that the book is really just setting up the concluding volume. Eventide continues to develop the characters that I cam to like in the first volume and we learn a bit more of the world in which they live. I enjoyed it just as much as the first volume. My only complaint is that, based on the cover one would assume that dragons play a major role in the book, and they do, but their role comes extremely late. A minor quibble. Again, the best endorsement of a series is to read the next volume, which I did.

Krista Walsh has succeeded in making this sequel as exciting as the first book, Evensong. Jeff Powell, an author who created the fantasy world of Andvell is once again thrown into the lives and events of his creation. A character in his own made-up world, he is forced to join his friends as they face the real world battles and tragedies that he set up for them. The story is full of twists and will keep you turning pages. Well written and compelling. I look forward to the next one. This is a must-read for fantasy lovers.

I will say this again, I'm not a huge fantasy fan but this series has me hooked. I liked the first book a lot...I loved the second book even more. Excellent storytelling, characters who feel like your friends, a plot with lots of twists and turns...wonderful writing and lots of superb world building makes this a must read.

  • Denise

Nice continuation of the idea of bringing the author into his created world.

It loses a bit of what made the first book so intriguing by taking away Jeff's creativity and thus his agency as creator. But, I did find it fascinating at what Jeff could no longer do.

  • Janet

The second book was even better than the first. An author's fictional fantasy world & the real world collide once again. Walsh's vivid writing makes you long to live in Andvell & fall in love with the people who inhabit this world.

  • Suzan Northstar

    Good read. Interesting idea.

I read a lot of fantasy and this is the first time that an author has insinuated themselves into a story. I has made it more interesting.

  • Effy J. Roan

    A great sequel

I'm happy to say that the sequel was as good as the original. I'm really looking forward to book three.
