***This is a Red-Hot Bliss Title! As such, it contains sexual content***

Conflict of interest is an understatement…

Since being disowned by her strict father, Cass Stone has spent her adulthood trying to prove him wrong. Her drive has led to more success than her family ever thought she’d achieve, and life is looking great. Not even an incredible and mysterious one night stand that leaves her a single mom can trip her up...until the father of her baby stumbles back into her life, as sexy and unreliable as ever.

Logan Alexander hasn’t forgotten the night he spent with Cass two years ago, but he never expects to end up undercover as her assistant. His job saves lives—like it should have saved his brother—and he can’t afford complications. It’s difficult enough to maintain his cover as a carefree wanderer when he realizes his attraction to Cass hasn’t faded...and then he meets Cass’s daughter.

I really liked the hero. I liked it more too on re-read. There is no mention of what happened with him over the two years but he did say she had been in his dreams every night. He really was wonderful. I liked the heroine too.

    Secret Baby

I liked this story. A man and woman meet and have a one night stand and two years they meet again but surprise there's a little bundle of joy now too! He was an investigator and she was an engineer at a Lockheed type of company when they meet up again. Still attracted to each other but he is undercover. I really liked him. He was a good man. He loved his daughter but he had to solve the case of who was selling government secrets first. He couldn't tell her either and she totally misjudges him. I did like the slight mystery and I loved their banter and attraction. I read this before but I liked it better on re-read. I will read this author again for sure. Sweet epilogue too.

Some years ago our hero and heroine met at a bar in Ottawa while the heroine was at a conference/convention. Our hero was working undercover for the CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) and his cover was working as a bartender, her bartender. They were attracted to one another and they had a one night stand.

Two months later our heroine, Cass, discovers she is pregnant. She tried to call the hotel/bar to tell him of their impending child but was told there was no one by that name that had ever worked there. What did she have left to do but prepare for her child and dream of him every night.

He wished he hadn't had to leave her before she woke up, wish he had more time to spend with her.
He is now on another mission. Someone is selling government secrets to our enemies. He is going in undercover as an administrative assistant.

When Cass meets her new Admin asst she is shocked to see she already knows him...intimately. He is her daughter's father and he knows nothing of his child. She couldn't find him to tell him.

He isn't allowed to ask any questions about her or her daughter (conflict of interest) or for them to form a relationship because if his bosses and team find out it would discredit him and the case against the guilty party would be thrown out.

This was a good decent story that moved a little too slow for my taste. There didn't seem to be much progression throughout, I kept waiting for the big moment to happen but it didn't, not in a big way.

As long as you can suspend reality you'll be okay.

Cassiopeia, aka Cass, has worked hard for all she's accomplished, and while she's taken risks that have paid off, that attitude also ended with her father disowning her. Well then...jerk.

Logan, undercover for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, has been observing Cass as she's pitching her business to a lecherous man with no real clout for making decisions. Logan is intrigued by her and since his case is now officially closed, he can finish out his "bartending shift" and concentrate solely on her.

Two months later, Cass now learns she has a permanent reminder of her one night with Logan, a fantastic night that surpassed her expectations, until reality intruded when she found herself alone the next morning. *Seriously Logan? Ugh.* Upon trying to contact him with the news, she's told he never worked at the hotel. With no other way to contact him, Cass carries on.

Well that famous saying "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" doesn't always hold true. While the conference had been in Ottawa, the same thought still applies. LOL Guess who Cass's new assistant is? Logan, her one night stand from two years ago, the father of her daughter, Olivia, the man that doesn't know he's a Daddy. *I'm picturing Cass mentally banging her head against a wall here, after she regains consciousness, that is.*

While they both instantly recognize each other, and Logan discovered she had a child based upon his research of her, neither let it show upon being "introduced." Not to mention there's the tricky little situation of Logan being there to investigate an espionage case of which Cass is one of the suspects. Plus, Logan regretted having to leave her the way he did and has thought about her a lot since then.

Will Logan uncover the real culprit behind the espionage? Will Cass take one more risk and see where a relationship with Logan could lead? Will Logan embrace the chance at happiness being with Cass and their daughter could bring? What happens when the truth about Logan's job, and his reason for being at Cass's company, are revealed? Will she be able to forgive him? Will she understand why he couldn't tell her the truth, regardless of how much he wanted to?

One-click now to find out how a one-night stand resulted in a family both would cherish more than anything else. This was a cute story with a different take on how past choices can come back when you least expect them. I will say, as a personal preference, I have never cared for the secret baby trope as a plot premise. However, I thought this one was tastefully done and in a way that is different from the normal.

Still as good as previous version :)

This book was so much better than I had expected. Its a well written book that had me hooked from start till end. All the characters are superbly created and the story flows effortlessly which makes it so much more fun to read. Most importantly its pace is exactly what it should have been, no slow/annoying parts. It is book that every romance lover will enjoy reading for sure. I did! :)

Cass and Logan turned out to be an awesome fictitious couple. Cass, who ran away from home as a teenager and then was disowned by her father, is strong and independent woman. She does not like men who have no ambitions and live a life less than what they can easily have. Logan is pretending to be just that guy. So there was no way that Cass will take him seriously. She had learnt her lesson and tend to be wary of people lacking direction. Still she cannot deny the attraction she feels for him....

Logan is pretending to be someone he isn't but he cannot reveal who he truly is. It does make things complicating between him and Cass. He will have to wait for the right time to let her in on his secret. He just hopes that its not too late to salvage what little connection they have. After all its not just Cass but his daughter as well, who needs him.

This is one of those books that you pick up and before you know it you've reached the end. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Cass and Logan were completely endearing characters. Cass is strong, determined and focussed on giving her daughter the life and love she never had. Her daughter who arrived after a one-night stand with a barman she tried and failed to find. But when Logan walks through the door as her new admin assistant a whole can of worms are opened in and out of the office.

Heart-felt, touching and with a side story that brings secrets and keeps you guessing a little, it was actually low angst which this type of story doesn't have a tendency to be. Cass and Logan's chemistry was fitting to their situation; their attraction is undeniable and their growing trust in one another bringing the intimacy. Logan appealed on so many levels, with his protectiveness, fears, determination and love for his daughter.

An absolute must read! Because Logan! There's so much more to the story aside from Logan... but Logan!
Cass works for a defense contractor and is attending a conference where she meets Logan while he's tending bar. They spend a night together and Cass returns home to her job as a Director in the company she works for, with a little extra baggage. While Cass does try to find Logan, she's resigned to being a working single Mom and things are going well. Forward two years when the company is having security issues and a consultant working undercover is brought in. Logan works for CSIS, the Canadian version of top government security. Logan's assignment is to fill in the role of Cass's PA.
The security breach is coming from her work group. Imagine Cass's surprise when she meets her new PA. Imagine Logan's surprise when he sees her two year old child mirror image of himself. Add to the mix her kind, elderly neighbor who has her grandson coming to visit for a while and it's none other than Logan. Cass works hard at what she does and has an extremely high work ethic. She views Logan as a non-motivated bartender, now secretary and next stop is some island in the tropics where he's going to kick back and play beach bum. She's not really impressed with Logan. Logan has his hands full, trying to get close to Cass again, solving the security leak in her company and adjusting to being a dad along with combating Cass's perception of him.
A wonderfully well written story, great characters and a few nice twists and just enough suspense and steam and the book was a great read.
This was my second read of this book.

I'm beginning to think I have a thing for the secret baby trope. So, when I read the synopsis for this one, I was hooked! I will admit that some secret baby books can be annoying and angsty. DNA tests and such can be a little much for me. This one was interesting in that Cass tried to locate Logan when she was pregnant but he was....unlocatable. (made that word up) Then he stumbles right back into her life and he can't even tell her the whole truth about himself. They definitely danced around their daughter's parentage, which kinda drove me a tad nuts. But I understood why they were both playing it safe with each other, Cass had one impression of Logan and he could not debunk that impression until he was done doing his job. Logan though,

I enjoyed the moments between Logan and Cass once they finally stopped resisting each other. They had smoking chemistry from the very beginning and that certainly didn't dissipate when they met again. Olivia, the "secret baby" was so cute and I loved the scenes with her and Logan...so sweet. Cass was a great female MC, she was perfectly capable of standing on her own and was successfully raising her daughter on her own terms.

Overall, this was a fun, steamy and entertaining read. :)

This has to be one of the sweetest books Ive read in a long time. I mean who can go wrong with Secret babies and secret undercover work. What I loved about this story was the fact that it really did have the whole real feel to it. You werent only following the storyline of Cass and Logan but you had the secret undercover work he had to do as well. Logan is a fantastic lead male and so sweet, I loved how the author made him struggle within himself for what he wanted. Cass's character was a little bit more in control of what she wanted and knew exactly what she was going to do to get it. This was a pretty fast read for me as the story line flows extremely well. Not once are you trying to figure out what is going on? This was the first book I have read from this author and I loved every minute of this sweet little romance.

    ooooooooooooooooo what a great read!
Whenever I read a romance book that involves a child, I get all giddy. The child just makes the story so happy and heart-warming LOL and Olivia was just awesome!
The chemistry between Cass and Logan jumped right out of the pages for me. It felt real. I loved every minute of it.
The story itself was easy to read. it was quick and witty and very romantic.
I really liked this book! I look forward to more Paula Altenburg novels!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review!

After an incredible night with a handsome stranger Cass's life will never be the same. Two years and one baby girl later Logan is back in here life. This is a fabulous story and the chemistry between the characters is sizzling but there are so many secrets that need to be shared. I highly recommend this one!

  • Dianne

I feel like this story was too simple for me. I feel like the author tried to squeeze in some drama here and there but failed. There were so many missed opportunities that could have been written into the story. I was bored a bit with the story. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice story with a cute happily ever after but it just wasn't enough for me to get hooked.

  • Robin Bielman

This secret and surprise makes for one swoon worthy read! I loved Logan and Cass! Loved their chemistry and oh my gosh, loved how sweet Logan was and how he and Cass tap-danced around each other. This book put a huge smile on my face, and I didn't want it to end!

  • Char (1RadReader59)

Cass Stone had always been a head strong and high spirited child. This totally did not go over well with her judgmental, strong handed, and verbally abusive minister father. So, it was no wonder when she was five and she tried to run away, not getting far due to a neighbor, and she was hit and she hit him back. Not winning her any points with her father and dubbing her a willful child. From that moment on she knew she needed to get away.
She ran away at 15 and was gone for 3 months until all the money she has saved was gone and she applied for a job. Where she applied knew she wasn’t old enough and called DPSS. The social worker said the way to get out was with a good education. They took her back home where she buckled down and earned a scholarship to engineering school. Her father said no way no daughter of his was taking a spot away from a man. That she was to apply for nursing or teaching she said no so when she turned 18 he kicked her out and told her never to return, call, or contact them in anyway.
Now at twenty-five she is in a job where she uses her engineering skills but also works the corporate end of the business. She is working her way up the ladder in fact she is at a conference she had just attended that went well. She had one more meeting in the bar of the hotel she was staying at with a retired military Colonel. He wanted her more that he wanted her business, she was there for. The bartender caught on to this and knew his type and wanted to help her out. So, when the Colonel ordered another round which would make it their third he made Cass’ a virgin drink.
Cass had noticed him when the Colonel went to take a call. He was sexier then hell. Sparkling blue eyes and a smile that could melt your panties right off. When she takes a sip and realizes what he’d done a hint of a smile plays on her lips and she makes eye contact with him. There was that smile. After that meeting she packs up and leaves.
The bartender Logan Alexander feels disappointed he was hoping on his last day at his gig at playing a bartender he could do a little celebrating for the real job he was there for. He was able to close the case for CSIS arresting the people involved with selling information to foreign enemies.
And it looked like Miss Hottie was celebrating something too. Oh well, he would clean up and close up. When he hears someone walking in Miss Hottie had changed into a tight pair of jeans a top. “M-M-Mary Smith” he knew she was lying when he asked her name she wasn’t a good liar. That’s okay she was harmless and wanted some excitement so did he.
She leaves her extra key and asks him to be a good employee and return her lost key to her after his shift. They hook up, they make a much deeper connection than they both expected for a one night stand, but Logan has a job to do so does she. He sneaks out in the early morning she pretends she’s sleeping to save the awkward good-bye moments.
Fast forward two months later Cass is ralphing into the toilet. She knows she needs to try and contact him but just too at least let him know there is some of his DNA out and about. When she final does try that evening and calls the bar they say that no one by that name ever even worked there ever. Now she knew for sure she and her baby were 100% alone. Not that she was ever going to ask him for help or anything like that, but there was that mustard seed of hope that he would want…
I really enjoyed this book it had a lot of things going on between the two characters, the work employees, and her home life. It really kept you interested. Then there was Logan’s grandma she was a hoot and how that would impact all their lives especially Cass’s and Olivia’s. I give this 5 stars. Provided by net galley.

I just love my romances with a bit of suspense and mystery, but am usually not a huge fan of the whole secret baby trope…little did I know what a fabulous read I was in for, and that the secret baby aspect only added to the depth of the story. From their first encounter at the hotel bar all the way up to the end of the story I was pulled right into Cass and Logan’s story. There was the perfect mix of romance and suspense in this book, and I just loved everything about it, especially the bantering between Cass and Logan – my favorite was the night they hook up for their one-night stand in the bar.

She might as well go for outrageous in answer to his question. She’d stumbled over the fake name, and there was no way he hadn't noticed because he didn't seem stupid. Besides, she’d picked the lamest one imaginable. She could blame that much on the alcohol.

“I just got out of prison,” she said. She let out dramatic sigh as she braced her elbow on the bar and planted her chin in her palm. “You have no idea what a relief it is to finally meet a good-looking man who isn't dressed in a Corrections Canada uniform.”

His eyes lit up like twin blue lasers as he played along. “Good looking, huh? What were you in for?”

“Overenthusiasm with a bullwhip and handcuffs. Something might have been mentioned about ‘inflicting permanent physical and emotional scars on the victim.’”

He sniffed in disgust. “The guy was a sissy if he couldn't handle a little domination.”

She drained the last of her drink and slid the empty glass across the bar toward him. She lifted her chin, sat up straight on the stool, and met those twin laser beams head-on. “Who says it was a guy?”

Logan was such a complex character. He is so committed to his job, but when it comes to Cass, he has a hard time trying to figure out what he wants. And when he realizes that Olivia is his child, I loved how he immediately was committed to being her father – even if he couldn't tell Cass since it would compromise his current investigation.

Cass was such a great mother to Olivia. She is smart, has worked hard to rise to a high level in her company, and is trying to do everything she can to provide a great life for Olivia. Although I found myself getting so angry with her every time she was being judgmental – the whole “Logan has no direction in his life so he must be irresponsible” thing – I did get why she acted that way and was glad that she acknowledged it was an issue and worked on moving past it.

Although there wasn't a lot of action in this book, between the corporate espionage and the story of Cass and Logan’s relationship evolving, including the fabulous tension between these two, there was more than enough plot to keep this story moving forward at a very fast pace. I loved the realistic aspect of the characters, from Olivia’s temper tantrums to the office politics, and loved watching Logan fall in love with his daughter…and his daughter’s mother.

This is a great read with some steam, some sweet, some suspense and a bit of mystery. This is my first read from this author but will definitely not be my last!

I haven't read very many "secret baby" stories, but if they're all like this one, I may change my mind...

I loved Her Secret, His Surprise--didn't want to put it down! The characters were great, their chemistry was smoking, and their baby was adorable--and realistic! I loved that she wasn't always the perfect child; some of those fictional kids (much like fictional dogs) just make me feel so inadequate at times. It's refreshing to see ones that act up from time to time :)

Logan was a great character--a real stand up guy, *and* he has a job that requires him to work undercover! A total win-win! Every time he called Cass "Miss Mary" (referring back to their first night together, when she did a horrendous job of choosing a fake name to give him) it made me smile. Though he was sickeningly good with Olivia--so maybe I did feel a little bit inadequate after all. ;)

I also enjoyed Cass's character--she did a great job of raising Olivia on her own for a year and a half, and though yes, she maybe could have tried harder to find Logan originally but I get why she was hesitant to. I felt bad for her to be in the dark about who Logan was and why she was there, but in the end I was very glad she didn't hold a grudge against him--the poor guy literally couldn't tell her!

(Well, maybe he could. But then he'd have to kill her. Or are they too nice to do that in Canada?)

Overall, this was a great read. I can't wait to read more from this author in the future!

In this contemporary romance with an intense sexual charge, you'll find yourself flying through the pages and the story of Cass & Logan. Her Secret, His Surprise by Paula Altenburg is about Cass, a young girl who was kicked out of her house at the age of 18 for being the wild child and not sticking to her father's strict rules. She's made a name for herself though by making it through college and getting a decent paying job. When attending a conference at a hotel, she thinks playing it rough with the bartender, or who she thinks is a bartender, will be nothing but a one night thing.

Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, that's not the case...

Logan Alexander has a job that leaves him unable to explain to his family and friends what it is he does exactly. They night he was undercover as a bartender was the night he met Cass. Little did he know what surprises he would face two years later.

This is a heart-felt love story that leaves you trying to fit together all the puzzle pieces thrown about. It's hard to deny the chemistry between Cass & Logan and those around them sense it too. Paula Altenburg brings a nice blend of fantasy & romance in this quick contemporary read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end and finished reading it in no time at all. The ending was sweet and romantic, but also left me wondering what happened after the last period was in place.

Brace yourself for this steamy romantic read!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I received this from Entangled. The title made me think this was going to be somewhat like the old Harlequin novels my mom read. I should have known better since I've always liked the books I've received from Entangled.

Cass grew up in a very strict family. Unfortunately for teenage Cass, she was never a pushover. She couldn't fit into the mold her father tried to put her in. When he had enough, he sent her on her way. She put herself through school, and entered a male dominated industry that judged her... Harshly. She's all about being professional, and getting a promotion. At the end of a conference, she see's a bartender she thinks she can unwind with and does, and deals with the consequences on her own when the bartender disappears.

2 years later, guess who Cass' new secretary is? Not only shocked that he's there, but she's terrified he'll find out her secret. When he does, she doesn't know how to handle it. Heck, he doesn't know how to handle it. I both liked, and was frustrated by Logan. I understood his initial anger/resentment for missing out, but she did try to contact him. It was frustrating and funny following them as they made their way back to each other. I loved Cass. Yes, she came across stuck up at times, but she was determined to have a good life for her and Olivia.

Her Secret, His Surprise is a well-written, sexually charged, contemporary romance. The characters are well defined and the quick-paced plot flows effortlessly from beginning to end. This is the first book I have read by Paula Altenburg and I can't wait to discover more from her book library. In addition, this story has a wonderful and engaging ending, which continues to make me smile whenever I think about Cass and Logan, the couple in this book.

I love stories about secret babies. After a passionate one night stand with Logan, a government investigator posing as a bartender, Cass learns she is pregnant. Two years later, Logan is in her life again, investigating her and the company she works for. Their quasi-professional relationship evolves into much more, as they learn about each other and learn to forgive the mistakes of their past.

Cass and Logan are extremely likeable, have great chemistry and challenge each other in the most unique ways. I immediately connected to them as individuals and as a couple. Their sex scenes are lustful and full of promise. Olivia, Cass and Logan's toddler, has some very funny laugh out loud moments. This is a delightful book, complete with great characters, a plot that twists and turns in all the right places, and an romantic love story.

Cass, a reformed bad girl, decides that she needs a break from her good girl ways. Deciding to throw caution to the wind she has a one night stand with Logan, a bartender. Little does she realize she’s getting more than she bargained for.
I liked that Cass was a strong willed independent woman. Based on her past she was afraid and somewhat unwilling to let people into her world. I understand that she was a bad girl in her past but I didn’t get that. To me she was a typical teen.
Logan didn’t get this message. He knew what he wanted and wiggled his way into her bed and life. I loved his persistence with Cass and Olivia. I though he was a total sweetie and on his way to becoming a devoted dad.
I thought both story lines were well written. It was a fast paced read that I was able to read in one sitting. It kept me entertained from the first page until the end. This is the first time I have read anything by the author but I will look for more.

This was a sweet book! Both Cass and Logan are likable and relatable characters. This was a fun and easy read!

  • Linda Quick

I thoroughly enjoyed this story of a one night stand that should have remained a wonderful memory, but instead had lasting consequences. Cass is an engineer that isn't taken seriously by her peers, and the facts that she's young, tall, and pretty, doesn't help her. Her department doesn't take her seriously and the "good old boys" undermine her at every opportunity. Logan is an undercover special investigator who is sent as an admin assistant to investigate Cass's department. Thus they begin a push-pull relationship with their baby as the wild card.

I found myself caring about the characters and felt invested in their story. I loved how Cass had overcome adversity to make something of herself. Logan is a very sexy undercover investigator who is constantly living a lie....to the extreme that his own family doesn't know about his job.

If you enjoy the genre, you will love this book. The author is on my must read authors' list.

This Red Hot Bliss title is a fun, well-crafted read. Cass Stone accepts single-motherhood when a one-night stand leaves her with more than expected. But when Logan Alexander shows up at her work two years later, she’s not sure she wants to share her daughter—especially with someone as irresponsible as Logan seems to be.

Except she doesn’t know everything about Logan, either. And the attraction between them cannot be denied.

I really enjoyed this title. One-night stand and forbidden romance are pretty common romance tropes, but I thought this was executed brilliantly. Nothing about the secrets being kept or the miscommunication happening felt contrived or unrealistic. The chemistry between Cass and Logan is believable and hot, and I LOVED the way Ms. Altenburg used their child to bring them together.

    Highly recommended.

  • Jaime Fiction Fangirls

I love a good surprise pregnancy book and this one was extra fun because the plot was so much more than just your average surprise baby story.

I love the parts with Logan and Emily the most. He was so good with her and you could feel his love for her from the very second he realizes that she is his.

The chemistry between Cass and Logan is immediate and strong but in order for them to ever work out he'll need to get past his anger and she'll need to stop being so judgemental.

The romance was sweet and steady but the mystery part of the plot is just what the story needed in order to make it stand out from your average surprise baby story.

This is a book that will definitely go on my list of books to reread when I need some thing sweet and fun to read.

Are you looking for a contemporary romance with a heroine who has a position of power? Then Her Secret, His Surprise by Paula Altenburg might be that summer read you’re looking for. The story realistically portrayed some of the struggles Cass had as a working mother and associated with her having a high level of responsibility in the workplace. Her position as a director was intriguing and it was nice that she wasn't depicted in a role commonly found in romance novels. I loved Cass's strong willed, independent and hardworking character who liked to be in control.

    DELIGHTFULLY SWEET AND HOT!

I found HER SECRET, HIS SURPRISE by Paula Altenburg to be a sexually-charged, very entertaining contemporary romance. In my opinion, you just can't go wrong with an Entangled Bliss title if you're looking for a quick sweet romance and this title is a sure fire standout. There's not a dull moment in the book and once I started it, I couldn't put it down.

This book is filled with sexual tension and a sweetness with Logan and his new found daughter Olivia.

Logan and Cass make a good couple, and its nice to see in a book that just because someone has had a shitty past, that they can't be a stronger person for it without thinking of themselves as weak. For this it was quite refreshing.

Its definitely a book for all romance lovers and it was a quick read.

Loved this book from the first page. One hot night of passion between Cass and Logan, ends up with a pregnancy. Fast forward, two years and Logan becomes her neighbor, not knowing about her secret. I fell in love with Logan on how caring he was towards Cass and Olivia. Loved the chemistry between these two, even though they each had their own secrets.
I read this book in one evening, I could not put it down. I love Red Hot Bliss books. Highly recommend.
