Eddie Izzard: Dress to kill Reviews

Quotes from this DVD and apparently also a book.

Note: Seeing Eddie in action is a must, reading, listening to CD, doesn't get across what is going on with the show. Eddie Izzard trained for years as a street performer, honing his skills in igniting an audience. He is a must see.

    Quotes:

I grew up in Europe, where the history comes from.

If you're choking in a restaurant you can just say the magic words, "Heimlich maneuver," and all will be well. Trouble is, it's difficult to say "Heimlich maneuver" when you're choking to death.

What shall we call our son so he does not get the shit kicked out of him at school? We shall call him Englebert Humperdinck! Yes, that'll work. (He continues with a skit of how E actually may have chose the stage name, lol).

We stole countries! That's how you build an empire. We stole countries with the cunning use of flags! Just sail halfway around the world, stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain." And they're going, "You can't claim us. We live here! There's five hundred million of us." "Do you have a flag?" "We don't need a bloody flag, this is our country you bastard!" "No flag, no country! You can't have one. That's the rules... that... I've just made up! And I'm backing it up with this gun... that was lent from the National Rifle Association."

The National Rifle Association says that, "Guns don't kill people, uh, people do." But I think, I think the gun helps. You know? I think it helps. I just think just standing there going, "Bang!" That's not going to kill too many people, is it? You'd have to be really dodgy on the heart to have that.

I adore Eddie Izzard. His one-man shows are fantastic. I first saw him in the HBO special "Dress to Kill". I had never seen anything like it before, it changed how I saw comedy totally. He's a facinating individual...and very sexy.

    Another cracker from Eddie Izzard.
Eddie is an amazingly intelligent and hilariously funny one and show. I felt I wanted a Little more from this book but I think I will always feel that way with his work.

  • Luke

Lots of glossy photos of Eddie, as well as a whole bunch of quasi-historical ramblings. Not bad, but not as entirely satisfying as one of his videos...

  • Jules

The best of Eddie! Perfection from start to finish!

  • Jenny

I got it as a gift from an engineer. Inspired by Eddie's sheer will to finish 27 marathons in 27 days at his age of 54 is inspiration.

In terms of the book itself, it did feel more like a standup comedy than a book. The book gets juicy towards the end.

  • Kate

Amusing and fun. At times, hard to understand due to either/or/both audio issues or troubles on my end understanding Eddie's British accent. Still, a good use of the daily commute to relax and destress with some laugh therapy.

i dont know why it took me so long to finish this book as i really like Eddie Izzard. i sort of paused to read some fiction and a year passed me by. After picking it up again it only took me two days to finish reading it. nice quirky book that is written exactly in Eddies style, it sort of meanders off on a tangent but does get back to what it originally started to tell you.
I dont really know much more about Eddie than i did before reading it but i found it an interesting read if you are a fan of his comedy.

Despite being a huge fan of Eddie's, I didn't enjoy the book. It does jump around like he does in his stand-up, but there is definitely something missing by not being able to hear him. I found myself dragging through it, intent on finishing, but not really liking what I was reading. It did give bit more insight to Eddie as a person and his past which I enjoyed, but I didn't find it nearly as funny as I was hoping. Alas, disappointing.

I absolutely love Eddie Izzard - this book had me laughing out loud. In some parts, you can almost hear him reading it. It's a really quick read, and an enjoyable one, though more uneven than his standup.

I bought this years ago while in London, when Eddie Izzard was at the height of his fame (at least for me). I really enjoyed this book, you could hear Izzard's voice on every page, his trademark wit shining through even when he was discussing more serious matters. A must-read for fans!

Is there a funnier and more profound person on the planet than Mr. Izzard?

    HILARIOUS
