In an alternate universe.
Claude thinks his biggest problem is trying to impress his new boyfriend when a much bigger problem comes along: his father vanishes. Not only that, several clues suggest that his dad may have invented a time machine.
In search of answers—and his father—Claude and his best friend Carolien must outmaneuver ruthless robots, stay a step ahead of the world’s most powerful corporation, and confront one of the darkest episodes in human history. But the two friends are quickly running out of time.
The Alternate Universe (Khronos Chronicles, #1) Reviews

Rob Wolf's debut novel, The Alternate Universe, is a gripping tale of time travel with a healthy dose of social commentary and a heroic duo, who defy stereotypes and expectations. Claude and Carolien, a teenage Will and Grace (if Grace was black) live in an alternate present where corporate influence is even more pervasive than in our current reality. Their journey takes them back to slave times, where their actions help them to better understand the people who have shaped their existence.
A great book for anyone who loves sci-fi, young adult fiction, and a compelling story with historical significance. -
I won this book in the Goodreads first-reads giveaway.
Rob Wolf's first novel is fantastically gripping.
This imaginative world mixing past and future technologies brings to life a seemingly common teenage duo who are put to a test they never would have imagined they'd have to take. The easy-to-read style, short chapters and engaging characters had me wanting to finish it as quickly as possible - and yet as slowly as possible, as it is only part one of the Khronos Chronicles.
This first part sets the scene for what I expect will be an incredible adventure, and now I can't wait to get my hands on the second (and hope number 3 comes out soon)!
To any sci-fi lovers, those who love social commentary in a fresh perspective, or those who are interested in the workings of parallel universes, time travel, etc. this is a book you won't want to miss. -
I was the fortunate recipient of Rob Wolf’s The Alternate Universe. While I don’t usually read books about sixteen year olds, the premise of the novel captured me. Claude and his BFF Carolien are in high school in a different Chicago suburb, one where horses are the only mode of transportation, thanks to OPEC, but cell phones, robots, and other electronic gizmos are all common. Claude has an absent-minded scientist father whom he loves, and a self-absorbed mother and evil stepfather that he must tolerate (barely). Claude gets pulled into his father’s research when he goes missing. Without giving too much away, it turns out that time travel is indeed possible, with all the implications for good and evil that presupposes. Now I have to buy the next novel in an addicting series!

Rob Wolf has created a future world and a story that kept me turning pages. I was drawn in from the beginning by this new world and the very modern young adults who race through it in this tale of intrigue and time travel. The characters are compelling, fun to follow throughout their journey of discovery. There were surprises all along the way. Terrific read for everyone, not just fans of YA, time travel and science fiction. Can't wait to read the sequel!

I received a copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway. It may be YA fiction but even as a 28 year old I liked it. The scenarios really made you think about how tiny changes could have completely altered the world we live in today. Characters were interesting, the book moved at a good pace and I could barely put it down. Looking forward to the next in this series.
