A pioneer since the early 1960s in sound art and digital composition, Yasunao Tone has composed for Merce Cunningham (alongside John Cage) and been a member of the groups Ongaku, Hi-Red Center and Fluxus. He is unabashedly avant garde and continues today to engage questions of noise, language and systems of representation. This indispensable monograph catalogues the artist's career through documentation of seminal projects.
Yasunao Tone: Noise Media Language Reviews
-
Forever a hero. With the capabilities to conceptualised a failure in technology through CD's - and tape in the 60's - way before the term 'glitch' being abused in the art circle, Tone proved himself as a futurist that really ahead of his time. His language related pieces might not the best for me, but his effort to put machine failure as a mode of aesthetic practice is amazing. A great small artist book compiled by Robert Ashley that I'd recommend to everyone who fascinated by the early development of the 'glitch' and how it contributes to the aesthetic vocabulary.
