Madame Sousatzka Reviews

Madame Sousatzka would have said: It reads well, my darrlink.
    I loved this novel.

    Review to come.

I enjoyed the first half more than the second. The characters in the boardinghouse were well drawn. The mother a bit over the top. A rather sad story. I saw the film about 100 years ago - interesting the changes they made - the boy in the book is 11 and white, the boy in the film is 16 or 17 and Indian.

An old story that I've been meaning to read for a long time. This tells the story of the relationship between an unorthodox piano teacher (Sousatzka) and the child prodigy who is destined for greatness (Marcus). However their versions of greatness differ and it is this which pulls them apart in the end. An interesting study of youthful desire to find one's place in the world unencumbered versus the urge to keep hold of what we think is special and sustains us as we age.

A strange little book with very colourful characters that had me enthralled at first, but I lost interest half way through and only finished it to find out what would happen. Very well written and delightful character descriptions. Good to read something out of the ordinary

Heerlijk boek voor liefhebbers van piano. Geestig en ontroerend.

I hated this book with a fiery passion. In Costa Rica--with 12 hours of daylight, 12 of dark--one reads what one can find. I disliked reading this book, what's more, two days after reading it, I couldn't stop thinking about how much I hated it. I threw it into the Pacific in Manuel Antonio. It had been my intention to trade it with another tourist for some other book. I couldn't bring myself to do that to anyone.

Completely different from the other Bernice Rubens I read, and seemed much more cohesive and meaningful.

  • Elif

A cute story with great characters.

I just finished re-reading this book. It was still haunting and other-worldly.
