Truthfully, Kahler's
online presence is what drew me to finding out about his writing – as you may know, I don’t read much self-published work, an even smaller amount of short stories, and even fewer LGBTQ. I am very pleased to say that I very much enjoyed Jarrett and am looking forward to reading the next work Kahler publishes.
I don’t want to say much about the plot of Jarrett, but it was very hard for me to understand the main premise when I initially went into the story. The lowdown? Necromancers have raised the undead – called the Howls – and the small remainder of the human race must battle for their lives with everything that’s in them, the magic found in their chakras. Also playing a large part of the story is a budding romance between Jarrett and a fellow soldier named Tenn.
What I particularly enjoyed in this story was the wide-ranged and diverse cast. I liked that an African American woman was the leader of the army and also a possible-love-interest; I liked that the main character was bi-sexual and that there was room for growth in all the characters. The plot of the story was also incredibly suspenseful and uniquely crafted, what with all the urban fantasy/fantasy going around lately. I think that the only thing that could have been done to make this story even greater would be some closer editing – some words were missing or included that made no sense/were still part of editing. As for Kahler’s writing style by itself, I liked that it was to-the-point but also included thoughtful passages – I just think the story could have been looked over once more before it being published.
I’ve already got my copy of Kahler’s other published story, The Ivy Gate, and I’m hoping to see this new, young writer on the block get big!
