  Many young American readers grow up with stories of Davy Crockett, Pecos Bill, John Henry and Paul Bunyan. What most of them do not know is that stories and myths like this exist all over the world and each culture has its own myths and legends that are passed down in their stories over generations. This book gives the stories of 11 different Middle Eastern and African folktales that have been passed down from generation to generation. We get to read about exciting adventures and romance tales, magic and incredible feets. This book has it all and is a great introduction to other cultures for young students. When you are learning about regions that are unfamiliar to your students, starting with their folktales can be a good way to immerse them in the culture.
  
  Voice and sentence fluency were great traits seen in this collection of stories. The writing always had you on the edge of your seat and reading to continue. I had a very tough time putting this book down and had to keep reading because there was never a point in the stories where we saw a lull, it was always exciting and building to a point that you just had to keep reading to get to. The sentence fluency also kept you engaged because the author expressed what was happening so you felt like you were emerging in the culture. This would help readers to learn about the culture and why I feel this would be a good start to a geography unit about the Middle East and Africa.
