The Spanish Duke's Virgin Bride Reviews

A tale as old as time. . . Vintage wrote a great review where she pointed out the Beauty and the Beast similarities. They are definitely there - the rose, the castle, the heroine helping her father, the kindly servants (no dancing tea cups though), the lonely hero who at first frightens the heroine for trespassing. It's all nicely done.

The heroine enters a one year marriage of convenience with the hero to save her father from prison. The hero needs a wife to fulfill the terms of his grandfather's will. They are both attracted to each other, but the heroine is very adamant about staying out of the hero's bed. I admired her restraint, until I got annoyed with how she kept thinking the hero's feelings were hurt by her rejections, and then dismissing that as ridiculous. Hero didn't have feelings. For someone who was supposed to be kind and thoughtful, she surely wasn't.

There was a last minute OW-telling-lies moment that was kind of weaksauce (but the heroine bought hook line and sinker.) It all works out, of course. I was team hero by the end.

Javier Herrera needs a wife in order to inherit his family's bank or else it goes into the hands of his cousin. The reason he finds himself in such a mess is because he trusted Grace's father who embezzled money from the bank in order to take care of his ill wife. He decides to marry Grace so as to take revenge and also inherit the bank.

The characters are so wonderfully written. This is a retelling of the "Beauty and the Beast" and the hero's transformation was heartwarming. The tension between these two is so delicious. They find themselves living under the same roof, the hero's castle and eventually fall in love, but both have trust issues and can't admit to their feelings which causes major angst.

The hero is very complex. His childhood scars ran very deep. All his life he had believed himself to be a monster. His own mother had told him he was unlovable, treated him like crap and he built a protective wall around his heart. He learned to control his emotions, a self-defense mechanism against getting hurt. Grace could see into his heart. She ripped down his defenses leaving him raw and exposed. Like her I wanted to weep for the lonely boy he had once been. The depth of his love for her is incredible. Her mistrust for Javier got on my nerves sometimes and sadly it had a terrible price.

Still this is a beautifully told story of strength, determination and above all true love!

Very, very good. Really more of a 3.5 than a 4, but considering I've read some real stinkers lately fours stars it is.

A Beauty and the Beast scenario down to the roses she tries and steals, this is a charmer. The H is a great, big hunka, hunka burning love, and Grace is the virginal heroine there to bargain for her dad.

The romance unfolds nicely. The heroine is charming and could have been a little bit quirkier with a little more work, but the hero is what makes it. Javier is a blatant seducer and plots to get his new wife in bed. She, unlike so many tiny h's before her, has a spine of steel. At one point after her latest denial of marital rights, he says 'You're so good for my ego, querida. Why don't you just kick me between the legs and have done with it."

    He's a keeper.

Omg did this one make me cry I really felt for her, this was powerful writing and if you don't want your heart on the floor don't read this one. He was an asshat at first but in the end I understood and I felt that they belonged together did she ever deserve a great guy. It took him a while but he finally realized what a jewel she was. Yes she is sweet and he is an ass so it's strong here not for the faint at heart.

the start was cliched. grace was desperate bcoz her dad had embezzled money from javier's bank n javier was going 2 lose control of the bank if he did not marry. he had only a delay of 2 months. so ofc when grace barged in his home n begged him 2 spare her father, here he had found his wife ! well, this is ridiculous. but neway, we dunt read HP books 4 reality but 4 fantasy lol. so he made a deal; they will stay married 4 a year n divorce quietly after dat. he did expect her 2 be available sexually though but she was adamant. she wud give her virginity only 2 a man she loves. n dats where the story got really interesting. javier got close 2 rape twice, tearing at her clothes n throwing her onto the bed. i was slightly troubled but turned on at the same time by his savage behaviour. he's a very virile n passionate man. he's very rough n very soft, both in one. der was character development, relationship development. i appreciated how javier gave her time, was patient. they slept in the same bed but he never touched her. it was a pleasure 4 both of them just sleeping in the same bed without bed sports. this was very touching n sweet of javier. i also loved dat he realised he was in the wrong; he did not have the right 2 expect sex wid her, 2 destroy her beliefs n her morals. he actually decided he wud not have her. he wud let her wait 4 prince charming though it was obvious he had the damn hots 4 her !! the atmosphere was electric bet them. he was a very virile n animalistic man, as i already mentioned lol:P this was one very special read n i highly recommend it. it came close 2 a 5 star but the start did not work 4 me

    Location: Spain

Grace travelled to Spain to attempt a meeting with Javier Hererra, the head of the bank her father worked for. Her father had embezzled three million dollars from the bank to try and cure her mother. After her mother’s death, he fell apart emotionally. Now he was facing serious legal charges and a very long prison sentence. Terrified of losing her father too, Grace was determined to see the Javier to beg for her father.

Javier’s a cold one. He has no sympathy for Grace until she drops to her knees to beg. He realizes that he can use her to fulfill the terms of his grandfather’s will in exchange for her father’s freedom. His grandfather’s will stipulated that he had to be married before his next birthday or he would relinquish control to the family bank to his cousin Lorenzo.

Grace accepted the proposition of a MOC to Javier to save her father. She would be his wife in name only for one year. Of course, things don’t go as planned and Grace finds herself very sexually attracted to Javier and he to her. She tried to fight it but eventually gave in and made their marriage real. She was relatively happy until a wanna be OW shatter her world by telling her about Javier’s need to marry her and to have an heir before the year is over.

While I enjoyed the book, I was seriously annoyed by Grace at first. Her strong stance against sleeping with Javier, when it was so obvious she was mad for him, irritated the hell out of me. Who did she think she was fooling? She was in love with him, he paid off her father’s 3 million dollar debt out of his personal funds, he wanted the hell out of her and she still fought him.

Granted, Javier was a bit of an ass. He was cold and arrogant. He was bloody annoying most of the time. But he did tell Grace about his childhood and not being loved. That alone should have softened her stance. Give the poor guy a break. Sheesh!

I enjoyed the book, but wasn’t in love with it. It was an ok read.

    Re-read June 2020

This was a 5 star read from CS originally but I’m taking away a couple stars now that I’ve read better from her. The h was a bit hateful imo. Javier was the man of your dreams but nothing he could do would ever be enough for Grace.

Grace was ungrateful and whiny. She keeps spiting on Javier’s lack of respect for her but it was the opposite. He treated her like a queen and put her up on a pedestal while she couldn’t even fake being nice and respectful to her husband. Can’t stand such women. End of story.

Grace gets her HEA but she didn’t deserve it one bit!

    5 stars!

One of my favourite hp books. It's sweet and I believe that they truly love each other. Adore both H and h. Wish the epilogue to be a bit longer but it's sweet enough to gain 5 stars from me.

p.s I rarely give 5 stars to hp books or any books

Bazi yerlerinde Helen Bianchin'in Bedel isimli romanini okuyorum sandim.
Grace ise Javier'in bankasinda çalışan babasi ölen annesinin tedavi masraflarini ödeyebilmek icin zimmetine para gecirmisti. Onunla konuşmak icin evine gizlice girmisti. Ama Javier pek de misafirsever degildi.
Ama cok pratik bir adamdi ve ona teklifi ise cok carpici dehşet vericiydi.

    Helen Bianchin hayranlarina tavsiyemdir.

I've read this one twice now. Enjoyed the interaction between hero and heroine. Love the brooding hero's and feisty heroine's who won't let anyone sit on their heads. Of this leads to giving the hero a really hard time which he usually has earned in spades. If you like M&B you'll like this one.

Javier Herrera, a Spanish Duke, learns that in order to run the family bank, he has to get married before his next birthday. He's in a pretty grouchy mood, so when Grace Beresford trespasses on his property to beg for leniency when it comes to dealing with her father's extortion from Javier's company, Javier isn't feeling so forgiving. But he does recognize an opportunity to get some revenge and to achieve his own ends - he blackmails Grace into becoming his wife for a year. Grace will do anything to help her father, so she agrees. As the two spend more time together, Grace begins to realize that Javier may appear cold and ruthless, but he does feel emotion deeply. And Javier learns that Grace is truly an innocent and may be the only person who can show him love.

I went back and forth on this one. Initially, I despised Javier. That man had absolutely no redeeming qualities to start out and it frustrated me that no matter that Grace hated him and could see how ruthless and cruel he could be, that everytime he kissed her, she melted into a pile of goo. Then she'd end up hating herself for it. I just don't see how you could be so attracted to a person of such unattractive personality. I will give props though - Grace was pretty damn awesome at drawing the line and absolutely refusing the wedding night. I was waiting to see Javier redeem himself and to become that better character, worthy of Grace's love. We do get to see him - in the second half of the book, Javier was WAY more likeable. Unfortunately, the author sets it up so most of the warming up and the falling in love happens off screen. It's, "two weeks into the honeymoon and..." or "two months later..." and during that time Javier is being a charming guy and being very attentive to Grace, but the reader doesn't get to see those interactions. So for me, it felt like suddenly Javier had a personality transplant. I would have liked to see some of those redeeming interactions. Although his tendency to let his temper push him towards nearly raping a woman didn't quite disappear...and was in fact pretty disturbing. I felt he really did redeem himself though there at the end with the grovel. Of course, by that point I'd kinda gotten a little tired of Grace and her hysterics. But honestly, Javier turned out to be good people by that point, so I was happy.

One of my favorite stories and every now and then I read it again. I loved everything about it

  • mikaela

it was an ok read. i liked javier - very alpha male. couldn't stand grace - all talking and thinking being feisty. it got old real fast.

  • Paula Legate

The book starts out with a Will being read. It states that Javier must be married by his 36th Birthday or the family bank will be awarded to his cousin. His grandfather wanted the bank to remain a family business.

Grace's father has embezzled money from the bank in order to take care of his wife that was very sick, and latter died. Grace knows her father will never survive prison. She goes to Javier to beg him to drop the charges against her father. She is willing to work off the debt. She will do anything to save her father. She was stumped when Javier asked her to marry him. He needed a wife, so why not marry Grace. It would only be for a year.

I loved how they lived in a castle. It gave the book a fairy tale feel to it. The story was an emotional journey between Grace, and Javier. I wished the two would have talked sooner, and told the other how they felt. They almost waited too long. To me it seemed like it almost took too long for the couple to find happiness together. I am glad they did get the HEA!

I actually thought this novel was very sweet and well written. I couldn't help but love the hero and heroine. Together they were like wildfire, the passion was intense. You could see the love they both had for each other develop as well. I liked the ending but it was pretty brief.

  • Asteropê

I liked the subtle Beauty & The Beast vibe -- the theft from the "beast" by the father, the daughter stepping in in his defense, agreeing to be "captive" to the beast, the prickly attitude of the hero and the opposite of the heroine as well as the rose garden.

  • Pam

I love this book. It's one of my favourites.

The alpha male was a bit too alpha at times for me, but the plot was clear and strong and I the protagonists grew on me.
