Jeff Burk is the cult favorite author of several books including SHATNERQUAKE and CRIPPLE WOLF. He is also one of the most original, ridiculous, and nerdy voices in the bizarro genre. B-MOVIES AND BEER RUINED MY LIFE! contains six short stories and two non-fiction pieces by Jeff Burk. From the filming of a hentai where a monster can’t get it’s tentacles up to a house made literally of cats, this collection shows why Wil Wheaton described his writing as “Lloyd Kaufman and Sam Raimi’s mutant offspring,”

This ebook also contains two non-fiction essays. One about his worst reading ever where someone called the cops and an essay on loving extreme horror.

This collection contains:
I’VE SEEN ENOUGH HENTAI TO KNOW WHERE THIS IS GOING…
THE DOG WHO STARED
HOUSE OF CATS
FROSTY AND THE FULL MONTY
THE MOST ACCOMPLISHED CRACK HEAD IN THE WORLD
PUNK ROCK NURSING HOME
WHEN THE COPS CAME FOR SHATNER OR MY WORST READING EVER
YOU SICK FUCK OR WHY I LOVE EXTREME HORROR

HAHAHA far out, what a ride. If you’ve ever wanted to read a short story collection containing: a Lovecraftian pornstar, a dog toy from space, shacks made out of dogs and cats, a snowman stripper, crack superpowers, and a nursing home punk band… congratulations you’ve found it.

Super entertaining fun read, I sat on my couch during a storm and read it front to back. Looking forward to my next Jeff Burk book in the near future :)

nice little collection of bizarre short stories. i mean, literally every short story collection that isn't explicitly down to earth is bizarre but this is bizarre in the bizarro way. tentacle monsters, houses made of cats, that kind of bizarre.

jeff tries to be the literary equivalent of a b-movie genre flick, i think that's his words. his stories live up to that, but his writing doesn't. b-movies aren't just b because of their dumb/fun/comfy stories but because of an entertaining brand of endearing amateurishness. the sense that the movies are trying to do something but being not quite able. like a kid whose dad is a filmmaker tried to make his own movie based on what he saw his dad do, but missing everything he didn't notice his dad doing. jeff's prose is just kinda dry and amateurish (but not in the good way i tried to describe above).

this bundle kinda reminded me of
Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls, one of my favorite books, mostly cause they're both bizarroish story story collections that are a ton of fun. aside from alyssa's prose being way prettier and having more of her own voice, the biggest difference i noticed was that she had way more defined characters, and more complex stories than jeff's. this kinda sounds like im ripping on this book more but this might actually be what's so enjoyable about this book, it kinda feels like someone just telling you a story, maybe a nonfiction one. perhaps jeff's prose was better than i thought. wow, well played burky.

anyway this book is entertaining and one of the stories is called "ive seen enough hentai to know where this is going" and it's short and cheap so yeah it's worth a read i guess.
