This lovely holiday anthology features seasonal classics from the turn of the twentieth century. Recounted in verse, the tales feature quaint color illustrations by popular children's artists of the era such as Margaret Evans Price, W. F. Stecher, Raphael Tuck, and others. Heartwarming tales include:
The Night Before Christmas, Clement C. Moore's timeless poem about a visit from St. Nicholas; Father Christmas, a celebration of plum pudding, Jack Frost, snowmen, and other holiday delights;
How Santa Filled the Christmas Stockings, in which a little boy discovers the pitfalls of greed; A Visit to Santa Claus, the story of Teddy's trip in his glider to Santa's workshop; Polar Bear at the Zoo, in which Teddy and his flying machine return to the North Pole with a polar bear; and Christmas ABC, charming verse couplets that spell out Yuletide treats.

I really like the way this was done and the kids really got into the old-fashioned pictures. Basically, this is a set of popular Christmas stories told mainly through pictures that look like old-fashioned postcards. The last two stories - Polar Bear at the Zoo and Christmas ABC - are actual stories, where the other ones have very few words. The pictures were beautiful and kept their attention - and without a lot of words, it gave them the chance to tell their own stories using the pictures, something that they really enjoy doing.

Ah, sweet nostalgia! This book is a throwback to a simpler and often more elegant time.

Dover Publications has put together a collection (or 'treasury') of stories, poems, and illustrations from the turn of the century.  Clement Moore's "The Night Before Christmas" is a perennial classic and would be obvious if it were missing, but the inclusion of lesser-known works makes this a gem.  Our bookstores and bookshelves are over-flowing with modern holiday reads, most of which don't satisfy but exist because someone (many someones) is hoping to cash in on the festivities.  But these older tales stand the test of time because they tell us interesting or important stories.  My favorite is "How Santa Filled the Christmas Stockings" in which a greedy young boy learns a hard lesson.

This Victorian-era art is elegant and charming.  Who can't look at the picture of a warmly-wrapped child riding the back of a Polar bear with a sky filled with both a bright sun and a colorful aurora and not be charmed?

This isn't necessarily the sort of holiday book that my children would choose to read, but it IS the sort of book that my children would enjoy having me read to them at bedtime around the holidays!

Looking for a good book?  This is a simple and elegant, turn-of-the-century sampler of holiday stories that is likely to be a treasured book for families that enjoy celebrating Christmas.

I enjoyed the old fashioned pictures and verses, but for the most part I did not like this collection of stories. Many of the pictures did not match the text at all. For example, in Twas the Night Before Christmas, a picture of children playing by a Christmas Tree with no Santa in sight is used for the verse "He was dressed all in fur..." Don't forget, the children are in bed during this part of the story!!! Another thing I do not like about this collection is there is no continuity of the illustrations from story to story. I know this is a compilation of old stories, but it just seems hodge-podge the way they are all included together without a unifying look. Some of the illustrations are reused throughout the book. Also... this book won't be appreciated by vegetarians! There are at least two mentions of killing turkeys or geese for food on Christmas. Some of the pictures and poems are a little scary, creepy, and/or depressing, but there are unique poems and little stories here that I have not heard before. This is definitely a book that will be enjoyed more by older children or adults. The phrases are very old fashioned and most of the language used will not be well understood by young readers. A copy was provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This anthology of Christmas stories was nicely done with gorgeous illustrations that looked antique in a beautiful way. My daughter was enthralled by the pictures, and easily recognized Santa, despite his less than modern appearance. The stories were cute and simple as well, and since they were short, they easily kept my daughters attention. I will be adding this to our holiday reading list for next year again since my daughter seemed to really enjoy it.

For young children who like to read or listen to
stories, this book will delight both reader and
teller of the short well known Christmas
tales and poems. Some stories are from the turn
of the 20th century making them new to many.
Images are taken from well known children's
illustrators. It would open the eyes of the young
to what was popular almost 100 years ago.

I am always on the watch for books that I can share as reading adventures with my children and grandchildren. "A Christmas Treasury" is a collection of classic holidays that can never be read enough or too often. This is truly a treasury - of those stories that are meant to be shared through the ages.

Old fashioned Christmas stories give you an idea about what Christmas was like 100 years ago! Nothing like Christmas stories of today. Great for holiday lovers and also history buffs!
