Grantland Quarterly: Vol. 9 Reviews

Another excellent volume of sports and pop culture writing.

It's certainly a handsome book. This is proudly going onto the living room bookshelf, where the impressive books live. But it's hella sloppy inside; missing footnotes, words italicized when they shouldn't be, weird color issues. And I assumed that since the articles are all six months old, Grantland would have spent that time adapting them for print. But instead the articles are filled with references to embedded gifs and videos, and some sentences were clearly links online that would have provided context. So it's extremely frustrating.
But, the nice thing about having some articles in book form is that it made me read things I never would have glanced at online. I wound up really digging into (and enjoying!) articles on the NHL and football coaching. And I'm absurdly happy to have Brian Phillip's piece on Andy Murray's Wimbledon win, which was some of my favorite sports writing from last year.
