    Book review :
    Indomitable Spirit
    By Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

Dr. Kalam is no more with us sadly . But they say , books let you listen to the great men of the past and talk to the bright stars of the future . And rightly so . Written in his own unique, inimitable style , Indomitable Spirit by Dr. Kalam is a soothing balm on the soul all through . Radiating all of Dr. Kalam's positivity , generosity , hope and above all, love for the whole humanity , the book is a compendium of his core ideas and values , interspersed with short anecdotes full of his loving wisdom .

The key themes that Dr. Kalam touches upon range from the people who inspired him , the importance of teachers in society , the need for spirituality and science to be the two legs of modern progress , the value of our ancient knowledge , to Dr Kalam's vision of a developed India by 2020 ( the book was written in the early 2000s ) including his dream of a knowledge society and finally, culminating in his call for all to build up their latent Indomitable Spirit , and make the earth a better place .

One can see the deep impact that his early teachers had on Dr. Kalam , a theme which was never lost on him even in later life . He is full of praise for our teachers, and more so for primary and secondary teachers . As he quotes Dr. Radhakrishnan , " Teachers should be the best minds of the country " , he really makes a call for more bright minds to become better teachers .

Another key theme is Dr. Kalam's emphasis on creativity and innovation . He cites countless successful creative individuals of India , right from Sir C.V. Raman and Chandrashkehar in Physics to modern India's IT entrepreneurs as an inspiration to let loose our infinite create energies . To him , if creativity is the fuel , then courage is the bedrock which will push our creative endeavours to their successful ends .

As always, Dr. Kalam hails us to uphold abiding vaues as our guiding light in our journey . He has a beautiful anecdote about the Afghan saint , Abdul Qadir , exemplifying unshakeable righteousness , even in the wake of adversity , and the ensuing reward for standing by one's values. He says ,

" Conscience is the Divine light of the soul "

urging us all to always follow this inherent moral compass we all have been blessed with .

He talks about science and spirituality as the twin pillars of progress . He quotes Rumi ,

"Angel is free because of his knowledge,
The beast because of his ignorance,
Between the two remains the son of man to struggle ".

Talking about the settting up of the Indian institute of Science in the early 1900s, he talks about how Jamshedji Tata built that pioneering insitution of science along the ancient Indian principles of ascetism and simplicity .

Dr. Kalam also talks about the critical technologies a developed India needs in the realm of IT , food sufficiency , healthcare , infrastructure and national security . He envisages a knowledge society as the right model for India in the 21st century .

Dr.Kalam ends with a bellowing call to action for us to all rise up to our best selves in an Indomitable Spirit and make India , and the world proud and happy .
You can't but feel at the end that the world needs more of such scientist- saints , specially now in the 21st century , when we are beset by deep geopolitical strife !! Like all his books , Dr. Kalam wins not only our minds , but also our hearts with his beautiful writing !!

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul kalam was born on October 15,1931and has the unique honour of being the recipient of the country’s top civilian awards : the Padma Bhushan in 1981, Padma Vibhushan in 1991 and the Bharat Ratna in 1997. Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam became he eleventh president of India in July 2002.

The book Indomitable Spirit is an awesome book written by Dr.A.P.J Abdul Kalam. It is the experience from his own life’s journey from the shores of Rameswaram to the hallowed portals of Rashtrapati Bhawan. In this book Dr.Kalam has showed great respect towards women and says that "womanhood is a beautiful creation of God" and this is explained in chapter-9 (Empowered women) which particularly depicts examples of women who have defied society norms and have done well to rise beyond their expectations. According to him, "there is no other profession in the world that is more important to society than that of a teacher" which is explained in chapter-2 (My Teachers). And this is what is liked the most as I aim to become a teacher. It gave me more interest towards that profession. He has great hopes towards the youth of the nation. Indomitable spirit has two components. The first component is that there must be a vision leading to higher goals of achievement. The second component is the ability to overcome all hurdles coming in the way of mission accomplishment.

In this book he tells the young men and women, "success can only come to you by courageous devotion to the task in front of you". Since I conclude that the youngsters should read this book as it is very inspiring, and by reading this book one becomes self – confident courageous and determined.

I can read all his books thousand times and still won't get bored. His personality is infectiously inspiring. This book also doesn't disappoint in that direction . It's a constant reminder for the nation and its people that aiming small is a crime. Dream before you convert it into action and finally achieve it.

The very thought of APJ Abdul Kalam's calm and serene, yet pensive face brings smiles to many faces, inspires a number of young hearts, adds passion to the thoughts and spurs so many to action. Indomitable Spirit is one masterpiece of a book that acquaints the reader to the beautiful thoughts Kalam nurtures for the future of India. The book describes in every sense what our country needs in this hour of trial when we our gripped with a gamut of socio-economic issues, justifying the urgency for highly enlightened citizens, creative leaders, autonomous learners and truly indomitable spirits, to usher India into a realm envisaged as dream India-2020. The book describes the recipe of what a citizen of India ought to be. Full of stories, poems, quotes and anecdotes from the life of the author, the book covers a very wide ranging burning issues like poverty, education and women empowerment etc. and reflects upon subjects like creativity, values, science, spirituality and leadership.

There is no doubt about the great personality and mind of APJ Abdul Kalam. And reading his own words about his journey from small village in Tamil Nadu to President of India and his love for science, for the children and for his country will make him your perfect role model.

Reading it even a million times cannot be enough. This is my version of self-help book, the motivation provider. It acts as a practical guide to little and big questions in life, the value of education, music and culture. No doubt he is one of the greatest visionaries of his time.

INDOMITABLE SPIRIT is a beautiful book written by Abdul Kalam Sir, he shared his vision about India and guidelines to achieve the vision. He had a clear vision for the developed India.
I have not heard about this book but turns out to be one of my best random decision and also this book suggested me several good books to read.
I took this book from the library, while holding this book, even before reading this book I really felt that I must own a copy of INDOMITABLE SPIRIT, it will help to channel the nation and to create more indomitable spirits.
The book is written in a very simple language, even a kid will understand and I guess that was his motive.

  • Vinil

A visionary who rose above in life defeating all the odds presented in life. A must read for the youth of our country to transform the face of our nation from developing to a developed nation. Betterment of the nation starts from the character one possesses. Building a positive character and emitting the radiance and positive aura to others will help build our nation. There is a lot more to learn from his excellency. Books like these rekindle the spirit for the betterment of the society and peace and prosperity of the nation.

It's a set of essays by former president APJ Abdul Kalam calling for a transformation from within to usher the new era of a developed India. There are some interesting anecdotes from Abdul Kalam's incredibly inspiring life as a teacher, scientist and the President. The missile man, as usual, succeeds in igniting a flame of courage in us to question our current status quo and to dream high. There's no glass ceiling, he says, and even if it's there, it made of glass. So, go break it.

My existence, count every page everyday, what a book! Always in my mind how to take a moment and then say or even tell anything, while living in India. This book exhorts you to believe such wonderful humans existed before and exist after APJ Kalam 's passing away. Chandrayaan 3 must have been carried by such humans, hope no one forgets this book exists! What should be portrayed Indian inspite of religious difference, liberal and scientific temper both balanced in this book. My 5 ratings to this.
