Nomads of the North Reviews

Engrossing story of a puppy and a bear cub who both tragically lose their mothers, get adopted by a kindly hunter, get separated from him on a wild canoe ride, and end up wandering around the Northern wilderness together for many months, just trying to survive. (Beware, even though this dog and bear have a sweet relationship with each other, they do not have a Disney relationship with the bunnies and other animals they need for food!) The descriptions of their wilderness travels, and the relationships, good and bad, they make with animals and humans along the way are very compelling. And it wouldn't be a J. O. Curwood novel without just a bit of chaste romance and obsessing over a woman's long, silky hair. First published in 1919, I listened to this as a free audio download from LibriVox.org., read to me by a very talented reader.

Beautiful. I am grateful to goodreads for introducing me to James Oliver Curwood. I am listening to the audiobooks which have been recorded by Librivox.org, they are free to stream online or download through audiobook apps,so far all have been very well read.

Početak je bio super, ali tok radnje previše podseća na Belog očnjaka pa mi je to umanjilo užitak. Ko bude prvo čitao ovu knjigu, verujem da će biti oduševljen.

    Love it so much

As a kid, I watched the Disney movie of this book a million times. I think it's called Niki, Wild Dog of the North. I had no idea that the author of Kazan and Baree, Son of Kazan had written it. Wonderful book, wonderful story, with an ending that tied it all up in a perfect bow. Sitting here with a few happy tears, actually.

This book was absolutely gorgeous. I seriously love James Oliver Curwood's writings and I'm so glad my mum recommended him to me. I've always loved reading from an animal's POV and this book was amazing cause not only did I get to read from a dog's perspective, I also got to read from a bear's. IT WAS AMAZING.

Neewa is absolutely gorgeous. From when he was born to when he was a big fat bear, I loved him. He was just so ADORABLE. That big fat pudgy body, the constant eating, and when he went into hibernation, not even noticing that Miki had left. He's just soooo cute. I was really sad when Noosak, his mother, got shot by Challoner but at the same time - that's what the wild is like. AND HEY, IT MEANT THAT HE GOT TO MEET MIKI.

Miki was sooo cute. When he was a puppy, I loved how friendly he was towards Neewa. He was just such a gorgeous, awkward pup but when he got older and started fending for himself in the wild on his own during the Winter months (when Neewa was hibernating) I really adored him. He was so smart, so strong and so brave. I'm amazed how he managed to get through all the horrible experiences he had, from Jacque Le Beau to Durmont. AND YAY FOR CHALLONER.

At the very start, when Challoner shot Noosak, I hated him. But then when he rescued Miki he was AWESOME. And then when he met Nanette, and everything worked out to be one big happy family with Neewa, Miki, Nanette, "little" Nanette and Challoner, it was perfect. <3

This was a really cute story and I loved it to pieces. Definitely something I would reread again and again. It was absolutely gorgeous.

I am a sucker for novels like this - the adventures of mongrel pup and a grizzly cub who fall out of a canoe tied together and become life long friends. The dog, Miki, is fabulous. Tough, smart, strong. The adventures are wonderful. Several evil characters who get it in the end. Really fun.

An interesting xenofiction about the unlikely bond between a bear cub and a dog.

    Uwierzysz w przyjaźń wilczo-misią?

Niedźwiedzie i wilki w środowisku naturalnym raczej się unikają, o przejawianiu ciepłych uczuć wobec siebie nawet nie wspominam. Curwood postanowił jednak połączyć przyjaźnią małego niedźwiedzia Niua i szczeniaka Miki.

Książka "Włóczęgi Północy" zawiera wszystkie zalety poprzednich, przede wszystkim wspaniałe wyczucie natury i jej piękne przedstawienie.

    7/10

Its a great read for teens or even children and their parents. Its full of innocent imagery of nature and animals which allows for a bond to form with nature early in life.

The main characters are a bear and a wolf dog who are friends and go through many perils together. Overall the story talks about family and the importance of a family circle, the lack of support, the need of feeling safe and belonging. It was a kind story and recommend it as an early read.

A lovely children's classic that I think everyone should read ☺️

Absolutely loved this book. ❤ A wonderful tale about a dog and a bear, parts of the story were sad but good wins at the end. Thought provoking book written in 1919 about a time that's gone.

  • Liisi Voolaid

A powerful way to imagine how an animal goes about life and human connection.

  • Federico Kereki

Reminded me of Disney's "True Life Adventures", and other Curwood's novels such as KAZAN, BAREE, or THE BEAR -- the main characters are a dog and a bear cub, and most of the novel follows their adventures.
